Privatization 3
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/26/ecuador-chinese-oil-bids-amazon

One thing to privatize a rail line, another to privatize someone else's land, specifically that land... good job, Ecuador.

Three quick questions from a total noob.
I just joined as there is some interest at my office to have an ongoing game throughout the day, and I suggested webDiplomacy since we can set up our own server with the code from Sourceforge.

Site Error/Speed
The site is currently running slow. It was timing out so I restarted the server. We've let Kestas know, and hopefully it will be running back to normal speed soon.

A serious educational project: part I Mathematics
I plan to spend a month or so this summer creating an individualized experimental math curriculum that would teach the mathematically inclined the subject and its history, starting with basic computations to calculus, number theory, matrices, applied numerical methods, and so forth. Can anyone suggest books, curricula and websites? Is anyone interested in doing part of the research and development with me?

Sweet 16 march madness tournament 2013!
While the Sweet 16 is coming up in the tournament, the games are getting closer and more interesting! Michigan State Vs Duke, Michigan vs Kansas Oregon vs Louisville Ohio state vs Arizona. Even though those aren't the 16 teams but those are the better games. What game sticks out the most? Predictions?

Weird Supreme Court alignment
Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that police need a warrant to take drug-sniffing dogs onto the porch of your home.

The majority: Scalia, Thomas, Ginsburg, Sotomayor, Kagan.
The minority: Roberts, Alito, Kennedy, Breyer.

Can you guys review my essay for English?
We have a project in my english class where we have to write 7 essays on a particular topic. My topic is popularity, and I chose to make this particular essay a satire. I showed to my English teacher, but when she was in the middle of the second paragraph she said it was really good but she didn't want to finish it so she wouldn't spoil it for herself when I finally turned it it. So I want to see what you here think. See inside.

American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Just finished Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" - Hugo and Nebula award winner and....eh...it was OK....love the concept....but think it fell short of awesome. Anyone else read it? First complaint: it never *really* explored the *American* Gods!

Pentatonix & Lindsey Stirling - Radioactive (cover of Imagine Dragons)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE2GCa-_nyU
Cool song Hanged Man. Have never heard of any of those people before, including the original artist they covered. But it was neat, and a good looking video. Gunfighter - haven't heard that album since like grade 8. Thanks for getting me to listen to it again.

In response, another song featuring some violin and also containing an LP reference (unfortunately not a positive namedrop). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a84r6be3p0

Lando, have you heard Father John's "I'm writing a novel." Really like that one.
Pentatonix is a great acapella group, and Stirling's videos are all fun to watch. If you enjoy her stuff, you'd probably like The Piano Guys too.
The bands I am listening to and enjoying the most right now are Mumford and Sons, the Black Keys, and Dawes.
I also really love the voice and the sound of this gal (easy on the eyes, too): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5chkHjTNFgk

The Mountain Goats are always fun. You really have to listen to full albums to get the true appreciation, but this song is good in its own right.

ZZ Ward - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXtNS1shJFk

Very bluesy, but a little edgier than regular blues rock. Plus, she's got a great voice.

dipplayer, I just got tickets the other day for Dawes at the Ryman in June. Middle balcony, close to the front row, going to be awesome. Sounds like you're a lot like me and don't listen to anything but Lightning 100 :)

That's my station. Those are great seats--the Ryman is a great venue. I want to see both the Avett Brothers and the Black Keys, but I won't go to the Bridgestone to do it. I saw Mumford last year at the Ryman--it was a transcendent experience.

Enjoy that Dawes show!

I definitely will. It'll be my first show at the Ryman. I saw Mumford and Sons two years ago at the War Memorial; they're good, but in my mind they don't hold a candle to Dawes talent-wise or heart-wise.

That's the best Radioactive cover I've heard, which is saying something.

You're in for a treat. Those will be great seats. Let me know if you have any spare tickets. ;-)
Pentatonix is normally an acapella-only band, with enough talent to crank out really good versions of current pop hits where you don't even realize there are no instruments. Their beatboxer Kevin Olusola is one of those ridiculous "I can do anything" people: Yale premed, fluent in Mandarin, has played cello with Yo-Yo Ma, and has the unusual specialty of celloboxing (beatboxing while playing cello). For this particular song, Kevin plays cello and Lindsay Stirling plays violin, so it's not a typical voices-only Pentatonix number. I'm a big Pentatonix fan, saw them live in September and January.

Here's a Pentatonix cover of Somebody That I Used To Know. They mostly do covers, but also have original songs.

I loved them on the Sing-Off. That was one of the very few shows in recent history that my whole family sat down to watch together.
