So, work is coming in slowly in the new year so I've put together a quick spreadsheet comparing the GR at the end of last year to this year. I'll add it to google docs from home but the work computers (really? IE7?) is giving me a hell of a time at the moment. Also, the formatting might be fucked because I'm e-mailing this to myself and then copying and pasting it in.

There several players (e.g. Dave Bishop, etc.) that weren't ranked in Jan '12 and I'm not going to be bothered to go back in time to see what they rated. If people are OCD for completeness, they can do it themselves. On that note, though, I really don't know why people are removed after 3 months. That really isn't that much time - especially if you're playing slow FP games. I'd suggest lengthening it to a year (also, if we could remove banned players it'd be great).

Also, there seems to be an error with peak GR. Several players (e.g. Macchiavelli, gantz) dropped in peak GR from 2011 to 2012. I don't think that should be possible...

Also, I'm not sure what tournaments were finished this year but, iirc, Tasnica also won the Triathlon to cap off an overall great year for himself.

To answer one of your queries, the way GR was calculated was changed lsightly during the year. I believe there was a problem with the world map and it being waited too highly. So, when Alderian went through and adjusted things he corrected this. I believe it explains why some players' "peak" GR fell.

On a related note, I also cannot open the GR lists from work due to a very old version of IE.

Lastly, nice to know I dropped to 5th in the games played list.

Can I ask how you chose Csteinhardt as the best new gunboater and not SD??

Because SD had a rating last January - 308.83. Not a new gunboater.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise! It has definitely been a great year, though I'm _still_ waiting for the World Cup to finish so I can see how that turns out!

This method is definitely biased towards new players but W/D/L info wasn't included in the '11 GR information so I couldn't dive any deeper into things.

BoSox, GR here refers to Ghost Rating. Not Ghost Ranking.

With regard tot he peak rating dropping, it is as Lando describes. It is a real pain to upload these large spreadsheets into google docs so I did not reload all of the old ones after fixing the calculation error.

I keep thinking of creating a spreadsheet with all of the available data on it with a few macros so you easily view people's data over time but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

While this may (or may not) be a close guess, I think Ghost started everyone with a GR of 100 starting January 1st and then only ran GR for that year, which will vary the results...

Alderian, do you by any chance have the GR spreadsheets in an unpublished document that I can use?
I'm trying to put together an excel file with increased functionality but it keeps crashing each time I try to import the All-Time rankings. If I can just grab them all from the original spreadsheets, it would save a bunch of time.

Lots of "Left Games"? Offer buy-in discount on left games?

I've noticed lots of games with where players have left. Would it make sense to offer discounted bets to join "left games" to make it more enticing and faster to fill "left games", such as a 25-50% discount? I'm new here, so maybe left games are not a concern to experienced players?

Haiku diplomacy for the new year

I played once on the FB version a game with public diplomacy where the only rule was that all communication had to be in haiku (5-7-5).
