Draw request by an unwilling
Has anyone been bullied into drawing a game when they were winning? This recently happened to me, and although the men I was playing with claim this is not the case, I really feel it was. One player decided to gang up on me and the rest joined in until I caved. I know its fair to vote in favour of the majority, but the only person it seemed to hurt was me.

hey dude sup

how's stuff
OK so mods stand for moderators... What exactly do they do? What power do they have over the game? How did they get that responsibility? Are they the site programmers or did they get picked some other way? Are they players as well? Can they make unilateral decisions or is there some knock off of the Jedi Council that they have to go through first?
About the Ghost-Rankings (this might be better directed at the guy that makes the rankings than just anybody). I understand that it goes through multiple sites and that each individual site has it's own point-based ranking system. But if the Ghost-Rankings really do work on the basis of who beat who and who lost to who, isn't it vulnerable to a lot of the same problems that the BCS is? Situations like the Big 12 South last year with an ostensible three-way Round Robin Tie? With the fact that it's thousands of players and not hundreds of teams competing isn't that problem greatly magnified? Also, becuase no one is "undefeated" like you often find at the end of a football season can it come down to pure win percentage? The experienced players have been in scores of games, is it possible to trawl through all of them to determine "strength of schedule?" Or do you just have far more dedication than I ever could and have found a way around these various obstacles?
The skill vs. luck debate: Batting averages aside the win percentages help my point more than hurt it. If given competition on par with the level the expert Diplomacy players face, Doyle Brunson or Mike Matusow would probably win 60% of their games at a seven-man table because poker does boil down to a fair bit of luck. However, an expert football team playing conference-style in a group of seven, against decent to goods teams will win far more than 60% of the time. (i.e. when was the last time USC didn't win the Pac-10?) That is because a football game, though it still retains an element of luck, chance, etc. is more often than not won by the better team. Don't get me wrong, there is skill involved in Diplomacy. Experienced players will know the map better, make better decisions owed to their experience, and the better ones WILL have good win percentages. However, their success in any one situation is not guaranteed becuase the game will be influenced by forces (luck, chance, whatever you want to call it) outside their control.
I hope that I didn't just piss off everyone in aposition to answer me. Thanks in advance if you do respond. Sorry for the over-long sentences.
@ Acosmist- Good, how'd that game turn out. Did you pull the solo?

I did! It should have been 17-17 with Austria, but I took Warsaw due to a defensive lapse in the final year, and that was 18.
Good man. Raise a Russian Imperial for me.

@ LJ TYLER DURDEN:
I strongly disagree with your premise that football has less luck than diplomacy. the only luck diplomacy truly has is guessing how your opponent is going to move, which seems eerily similar to play-calling in football in my opinion.

And your comparison of winning a conference with winning a single diplomacy game is clearly an apples to oranges comparison. A much fairer comparison is the apples to apples comparison of a single diplomacy game with a single football game. And when was the last time USC didnt lose to some random (and let's face it, as much as I love the Pac 10, crappy) Pac 10 team? the closest thing diplomacy can have to a league is the TGM tournament going on right now, and I am pretty confident one of the best players on the site will win that.

uclabb, I agree with you that his comparison with football is very much off. Winning a football conference is much more like winning a diplomacy league.

However, when was the last time USC didn't lose to some random/crappy Pac-10 team?

2008 - lost to Oregon State who was tied for second in conference and a few plays against Stanford from going to the Rose Bowl.

2007 - lost to Oregon who could have gone to the title game if Dixon hadn't been injured.

2006 - lost to Oregon State who was third in conference behind co-champs Cal/USC and only 1 game behind. Specifically the very close game against WSU.

The only random crappy Pac-10 teams that USC lost to recently were 2007 Stanford and 2006 Stanford.

2. They call THAT violence? Should see a England-Germany match! ;)

Views on Goerge Orwell Great Politicain and Writer, or Pessimistic Pundant
Well it is interesting his great peice Animal farm was written when admiration for Stalin and USSR was at its height in Britain and US. We can all see today that the Totalitarian nightmare that was predicted never came about does this mean that all that pessimism was rubish and that that glim future was not possible?
