choosing sides

do you have any say in what country you start as? i just started playing, and i've signed up for 2 games... and i'm italy in both games. i know enough about the game to know that this sucks. did i neglect to choose sides somehow, or do i just have horrible luck?

A Question about Survival

I survived in a game with zero ceners left because I still had a retreat to make after the person who attacked me reached 18 by taking my last SC. This kind of seems like a cheap way to survive... Would that be counted as survival in any of the major face-to-face tournaments today?

(Note that this is merely an example to illustrate my strategical question more efectively, it has nothing to do with any of my games, I'm just curious to see if this sort of tactic can actually defend a province):

Let us say you have an army in Sevastopol and a fleet in Black Sea. Your opponent has armies in Ukraine and Rumania. Your opponent orders Ukraine to move to Sevastopol with support from Rumania. You order Sevastopol to move to Ukraine and Black Sea to move to Sevastopol.

Does the attempt on Sevastopol by your opponent succeed? Or do you retain control of Sevastopol and the units bounce each other?

P.S. For the sake of simplicity, neglect any effects of the orders from adjacent provinces to those I named above.

Your opponent succeeds because it is a two versus one situation.
He has one attacking unit and one support.
Sevastopol on the other hand has no support.

Rumania wasn't left vacant though. It was providing support. The attack came from the Ukraine.

Sorry, you said move from the Black Sea not the retreating unit from Sevastopol. Well then on the next turn it might be able to.

dangermouse i think you misread his orders. he ordered the black sea into sevastopol.
What will happen is that ukraine will take sevastopol, and u may retreat. the black sea will bounce

By the way, this is a Tactical question and somewhat of a Rules question.
The three main areas of Diplomacy are
Tactics-the way you move the pieces and their relative position
Strategy-the way you move the countries and their relations
Diplomacy-the way you move the players and their pyschosis

How do draws work?

The "Help" section isn't clear: do all players have to declare a draw, or is this something that happens automatically? If the latter, what triggers it?

This site's future

So close to 4000 games are completed now. i think this site needs a better interface? i suggest www.conquerclub.com as a model. something where all the data is arranged more in a table format than in the sort of list that is incredibly hard to read.

winning percentage - a suggestion

I think that only your completed games should be used to calculate the percentages. It would make all of the percentages actually accurate. Games in progress shouldn't be included. Anyone else agree?
