History Good or Bad/ Breakfast Good or Bad/ is there Good and Bad?
Sorry for that screed but some of the forum subjects are getting me distracted.

History is good. Breakfast is good. "is there good and bad" is very bad.

Don't ask me what I mean by that. I don't know.

Is History Good or Bad? A bit like the question about the British Empire, I would say that is a meaningless question. One that Robert Pirsig would say requires the answer "mu", which means that the question does not have a yes or no answer.

Breakfast - good or bad? Generally good . But it would depend on what you have for breakfast.

Is there Good or Bad? Depends on the context. From my perspective there are things that are good or bad for me. I would say that one person's good might be another person's bad. Good or bad is a subjective concept.

History- Hi! Want to hear a Story!!!??
Breakfast- Break!! Ready?? Set......Fast!!
Good and Bad- Fair is foul and foul is fair...

Of course the easiest answer to all these questions is beer. As Homer Simpson taught us: beer is the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.

History is just the record of good and bad things happening. So not evil or good in itself.

Breakfast is always good for the day.

Good and Bad certainly exist, do you want to know the Truth about them? :)

In my defence (for the British Empire thread) it was intended to create an interesting topic of discussion, which it did. I'm not necessarily saying it could be classed as good or bad, but "British Empire: Neither good nor bad, realisticly it's fairly mediocre in that respect. Do you agree?" probably wouldn't fit in the topic title.

And breakfast is good.

I believe that there is good and bad. I believe this because I also believe that there IS such a thing as absolute truth. However, that's not a very popular stance in this era of postmodern moral relativism which has already been expressed in this thread.

Good and bad only seem subjective due to our own limitations of knowledge. We don't know and can't know all the ramifications of every situation and so therefore sometimes we are unable to determine whether or not something is good or bad.

God can though - there, I brought God and Truth into it...hope that doesn't totally bring on a flame war...
Denzel73 (100 D)

In my head, your God doesn't exist... therefore the existence of your God cannot be an absolute Truth... simple?

Is my opinion good or bad?
Chrispminis (916 D)
02 Dec 08 UTC
Denzel, while I agree there is no God, if there was an absolute truth, your opinion wouldn't change it. It doesn't mean it's true to everyone, it means it's true regardless of anyone.
Denzel73 (100 D)
02 Dec 08 UTC
If there was any absolute Truth, it would obviously be obvious to Everyone :)

My point was that anyone disagreeing with me would name my opinion "bad", therefore effectively proving that there are no absolute "good" and "bad", either. Since my opinion of my own opinion is that it is good, otherwise I wouldn't have it as an opinion.

I also find philosophy quite useless, since it really doesn't prove anything to anyone :)

i thought I would be bad for I little while, but now I want to be bad for good.

Denzel I disagree. You can have an absolute truth that people are ignorant of, or chose not to believe. It makes it no less true. as a really simple example, 2+2 is absolutely true. There are people out there that can't do math and are thus ignorant to this fact.

If that's too simple extend it to something just as absolute, yet a little more difficult to comprehend. If you start with 1 and keep adding half of the last number, you'll never quite reach 2 but you can get as close to it as you'd like to calculate (1+.5+.25+ ...)

Again absolutely true, but some people wont have the math capacity to comprehend it.

But - having said that, I would agree with you that God is not an absolute truth. But we might be the ones who just can't comprehend it.

Damnit! I think I'm back to Philosophy! I hate Philosophy!!
philcore (317 D(S))
02 Dec 08 UTC
That should have said 2+2=4 is absolutely true ...

Absolutes? What about Uncertaintly Principle?
philcore (317 D(S))
02 Dec 08 UTC
well that certainly applies to one aspect of physics - but really, it doesn't imply that nothing is certain anymore than relativity implies that everything is relative, or that "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" can be applied to social situations. Keep physics phrases where they belong ... in physics.

But an interesting question would be - is the uncertainty principle (that you can't precisesly determin both the position and momentum of a particle) an absolute truth?

Cause that would be ironic ...
spyman (424 D(G))
02 Dec 08 UTC
2+2 = 4 is a tautology. It is true by definition.
The only absolutely certain truths are tautologies. The best we can hope for everything else is a high probability of being true.
Jacob (2466 D)
03 Dec 08 UTC
Maybe from our persoective the best we can hope for is a high probability. That's why God would be the only one who would be able to know absolute truth. And the only way we could know it is if He revealed it to us...

But again, our inability to perceive absolute truth does not mean that it isn't there. I mean, c'mon, *something* has to be true...

A Question about Survival
I survived in a game with zero ceners left because I still had a retreat to make after the person who attacked me reached 18 by taking my last SC. This kind of seems like a cheap way to survive... Would that be counted as survival in any of the major face-to-face tournaments today?

How do draws work?
The "Help" section isn't clear: do all players have to declare a draw, or is this something that happens automatically? If the latter, what triggers it?

This site's future
So close to 4000 games are completed now. i think this site needs a better interface? i suggest www.conquerclub.com as a model. something where all the data is arranged more in a table format than in the sort of list that is incredibly hard to read.

winning percentage - a suggestion
I think that only your completed games should be used to calculate the percentages. It would make all of the percentages actually accurate. Games in progress shouldn't be included. Anyone else agree?
