choosing sides
do you have any say in what country you start as? i just started playing, and i've signed up for 2 games... and i'm italy in both games. i know enough about the game to know that this sucks. did i neglect to choose sides somehow, or do i just have horrible luck?

A Question about Survival
I survived in a game with zero ceners left because I still had a retreat to make after the person who attacked me reached 18 by taking my last SC. This kind of seems like a cheap way to survive... Would that be counted as survival in any of the major face-to-face tournaments today?

How do draws work?
The "Help" section isn't clear: do all players have to declare a draw, or is this something that happens automatically? If the latter, what triggers it?

This site's future
So close to 4000 games are completed now. i think this site needs a better interface? i suggest www.conquerclub.com as a model. something where all the data is arranged more in a table format than in the sort of list that is incredibly hard to read.

winning percentage - a suggestion
I think that only your completed games should be used to calculate the percentages. It would make all of the percentages actually accurate. Games in progress shouldn't be included. Anyone else agree?

Who's Number One?
Who's ranked number 1? Does anyone know?
MarekP
You're aware the HOF is in the help section, right? Alot of people don't check that area too often...which is sad, because it has alot of useful info.

no i have absolutely positively no idea

The ranking system is in contention. Luckily both points and elo place MarekP on top. When you start moving down the list you start running into problems.

Doesnt Rait have better stats though?
Centurian (3257 D)
01 Dec 08 UTC
Depends on how you look at it. Rait's win percentage is 52, which is insane (it includes games he hasn't finished). Mareks is a mere 38%. But Marek draws more games. The points and Elo system putting him ahead imply that Marek has beaten (on average) more difficult opponents than Rait.

What is the Elo system?
spyman (424 D(G))
01 Dec 08 UTC
The Elo rating system is best known for its use in chess ratings.
It aims to quantify the skill level of each player. Thus if you beat a player with a high rating it will count more to your rating that beating a player with a lower rating.

The main trouble with the points system here is that if you are a top ranked player and then invest all of your points in a high points game, your position in the ranking will plummet.
Kestas has his reasons though for the current system, flawed as it is.

Ranking/scoring/achievement recognition systems in the hobby have been in contention since the start of the hobby.

There problems of measuring achievement relative to other games and scores and players of note and email vs postal vs face to face vs social play vs play in different dynamic backgrounds,

There are those that value draws over centers so that a player in a three way draw with 5 centers does better than a person in 5 way draw with 15 centers.
there are those that value relative value within a game based on centers so that someone who is 1 center ahead when the game is over is considered as the winner, though there are those that value the difference between the lead and the second player.
there is the problem of relative game results even in a win... are four three way draws equal to one win and three eliminations?
is a draw on the top board of the World Championship worth more than a win in a game with 7 novices?

All these questions and more have existed for decades.

well - i think there has to be a better solution than any of the things i've seen so far...

i know you want to keep the point system in tact kestas, if it caint broke dont fix it is a wise policy. but i thought the elo based medals next to our names was a great idea. that way the point system isnt not affected at all and remains the basis for entering and scoring games. the elo based medal graphic is purely for show and pride rights.

I'm with sean on this, but every time the subject is broached I've gotten very unyielding replies.

I suppose I sort of partly dropped the ball on the medals...I had mentioned that I was going to get something done in Oct and I got busy and it didn't happen. Then all the ELO chatter died down so I didn't know if it was worth it to continue.

I have a redo started...if it's something that can be implemented (either ELO or points based), I'll finish what I have and someone can decide if they like them or not.
