Generation Jobless
A cool documentary, and although focused on Canada (Toronto specifically) it also applies to a lot of other developed countries such as the US.

Be Afriad, American Conservatives...Be Very Afraid (Or, You Know...NOT)
http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-03-21/conservatives-fear-discrimination-against-whites?cmpid=yhoo I don't care HOW BADLY Obama's doing on foreign policy issues (which, for the record...yeah, he's not exactly winning any awards there...um, I mean, since that Nobel that he won that even we liberals are scratching our heads over.) If conservatives don't, en masse, change their attitude on this topic and break the liberal monopoly on the multicultural vote...YOU WILL LOSE. PERIOD.

The boston college tapes
This is a difficult one, and I'm really undecided about how I feel about this issue. For those who don't know the boston college tapes are recorded interviews of former paramilitaries in Northern Ireland who only agreed to speak on condition that they would not be released until after their death. Tapes have now been handed to law I forcemeat and some interviewees have been arrested for serious crimes. Help me out here..

Webdiplomacy Tournament 2014
I am interested in starting a Webdiplomacy tournament this year. Please post here if you are interested in joining and state your preferred phase length. At the moment I am thinking 36-72hr phases. It will take solo winners through to the next round and those in draws (the less people the better) might have a chance to join the soloists. Is anyone interested?

So, there seems to be a running joke about how much everyone hates Draugnar. Other tha the fact that he swears for emphasis a lot, I find he usually makes real points when he posts, and when I have had a real question regarding the game/forum, he has been downright civil and helpful. Polite even.

So what started the whole "everybody hates Draug" thing that gets brought up all the time. let the newbie in on it guys.

Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist Church
IS DEAD.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I heard that at lunch on NPR.

Yeah, the CNN headline reads "Most hated man in America dies"

Personally I think it's a silly headline, maybe this is just me, but I didn't know the name Fred Phelps until today. Can't hate a person I don't know much about.

So, informal poll- how many of you knew/didn't know the name Fred Phelps 24 hours ago? Westboro is in the news all the time of course, that's not what I'm asking. I'm curious whether I'm ignorant on this topic, or he was legitimately not in the public eye.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Mar 14 UTC
I knew the name. But I didn't know his background that I got from NPR today.
Hunebed (211 DX)
20 Mar 14 UTC
I knew him, because of the documantaries that Louis Theroux made about him.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Mar 14 UTC
He also did numerous interviews at the height (and depth of their hypocrisy) of the WBC so anyone who caught those would know his name.
stupidfighter (253 D)
20 Mar 14 UTC
Okay, so that's 2 who knew the name. Also, we should probably go back more than 24 hours- how many knew before the news story about him being sick would be the better question.
kasimax (243 D)

"Most Hated Man in America Dies" ??

I'm pretty sure John Edwards is still alive...
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
20 Mar 14 UTC
I had heard a lot about Fred Phelps prior to the most recent news.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Mar 14 UTC
Well, if we are going to lump politicians who cheat on their wives in there, perhaps some of the Kennedys belong in the group. :-)

Seriously, John Edwards is scum (cheating on a wife dying of cancer?!) but that's hardly the same as picketing children's funerals. Phelp's and his WBC did far worse than Kerry ever could have done. And Phelp's is about to walk up to God and say "Let me in!" and God is going to say "What the fuck you talking about? Remember the verse 'If you did it unto the lest of these...'? Go away moron fucktard!" and yes God will use those exact words cause he doesn't give a fuck.

Good riddance. This is one of those times in which I hope there is an afterlife, because if there is, Fred Phelps is surely roasting in the depths of Hell.

Yes, I had the misfortune of knowing who he was.

Why would Fred Phelps go to hell? He was a devout Christian and preached the teachings of the Bible. If there is a heaven he is surely in it.

^just because someone claims to be a Christian doesn't mean they are, and just because they preach from the Bible doesn't mean they preach the Bible's teachings.

Really? Who decides who is or isn't a scotsma ... err, Christian?

What has Fred Phelps taught his congregation that isn't in the Bible?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
21 Mar 14 UTC
err... let me rephrase that last part. How can one preach from the Bible and not preach the Bible's teachings?
Draugnar (0 DX)

Satan can recite the Bible, but his teachings will inevitably be a twisted interpretation.

"I take no solace or joy in this man's passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding "God Hates Freds" signs, tempting as it may be.

He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end."

-George Takei

Alas, I now feel terrible about +1'ing this thread. Especially after reading Mr. Phelps' wikipedia page and reading about his battles in the Civil Rights struggle, before such things had become fashionable. We judge much but know little (although the miracle of the internet is changing that somewhat).

Fred Phelps, rest in peace. I know well that hateful thoughts and deeds are born from pains and wrongs we have suffered but not recovered from. We all stumble and struggle through our lives in this world; sometimes our stumblings are better recorded than our triumphs (I must wonder, though, how much it matters that we wanted to get on that record for doing stupid things). All of us carry the seeds of both Good and Evil. When we choose every day which seed to water and nurture, it is easy to forget which is which with the limited and filtered views we all have when we're tied up in these highly fallible mortal coils. While I find the practices of funeral disruption and legal terrorism to be entirely repugnant, and I don't understand why you were so hung up about gays, I must confess that I, too, am a sinner - guilty of even greater sins, perhaps, than yours. I simply happen to be fortunate (for now) that they happen to be of the sort that the news media doesn't really care about. I hope that God/the Angels/the Spirit Guides are merciful with you, as I hope they will be merciful with me when my stay on this earth comes to an end, as it will for all of us, for I know I will be judged just as you have been today. Forgive us all, for we know not what we do.

If a mod/admin/The Almighty Kestas would remove my +1 from the OP, I would be in their debt.

@ Christians:

Actually I like Yellojacket's question the way he put it the first time:

What has Fred Phelps taught his congregation that isn't in the Bible?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Fred Phelps wasn't in the spotlight enough to be the most hated man, but his organization may be the most hated, who knows...

"What has Fred Phelps taught his congregation that isn't in the Bible?"

I don't know, I was never a part of his congregation. But even if the answer is "nothing," let me put it to you this way: if I pick a page from the Diplomacy rulebook--just one page--and teach it to you, have I taught you how to play the game? Could you play it? So if I pick and choose what from the Bible I want to teach, have I really taught someone how to be Christian?

Context is important, boys and girls. Without it, you can make anything say whatever you want.

Funniest Joke
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?". The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guys says "OK, now what?"
