RIP Nelson Mandela
Yes, it's seemingly old news, we've all known it's coming, but there's no reason we shouldn't offer a little respect to, literally, one of the greatest and most respected figures in human history. Tough to swallow.

Is this a game error?
I'm playing a game with some friends, and the last turn's orders ended up very strange. I don't believe that everyone missed turns, but there are almost no orders showing on the map. And even if everyone had missed their turn, there is no explanation for the army in kiel being dislodged. Please take a look: http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=128965

Poor Casting Choices and Underwood Sings--NOT a Few of My Favorite Things!
So...Carrie Underwood doing "The Sound of Music." Kids that were stiffer than cardboard as the Von Trapp family. A black nun in Nazi Austria (I'm all for color-blind casting, but...was there no other role for her, a black nun in Nazi Austria just on the verge of WWII just seems an indication the production team didn't care one bit about the setting) and so on...this was a thing that happened. Thoughts on Carrie Underwood's "The Sound of Music" remake?

giving players their points back.. a bad idea?
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/36/pb75.jpg/

I have never run into this problem before, but this is very frustrating. Giving players under 100 D their points back, puts an unfair twist in the game. In the game i played with this player, we almost had a draw forced against one larger power, and he decided to attack me.

Site Strategy Differences
Sociological observations from a nonsociologist.

So Im fairly new to Webdip, but have played at other sites. Webdip was recommended as an active community with good live games. I have been thrilled so far.

Most interesting has been the strategy differences between sites. In live gunboat games Ive played or reviewed here, I see an early EF alliance maybe 10% of the time. Most always, France tries an early invade (often successfully). On other sites, EF work together through 1904 about 60%.

And thats just one example. Im guessing it stems from mimicry and learning by example, combined with the limited live audience. But quite fascinating.

Also, Im not a statistician. Im guessing 60% from experience on two other sites, and 10% on my gut here. Could be confirmation bias in that I think Im seeing less EF, so remember attacks more than wrorking together. But still.

We have a fairly good set of site statistics for opening moves and win percentage for each country for both full press and gunboat, but nothing on alliances or any "soft" data that can't easily be measured. If you're interested: www.draugnar.com/vaftstats

Just based on my experience here, I'd say E/F is one of the more reliable alliances in both gunboat and full press, at least in the early game. I haven't played many live games this year, unfortunately, but even when I did play live consistently I would say that our E/F percentage is much higher than 10% and probably has a strong positive correlation with GR - that is, as skill improves, likelihood of an E/F (again, in 1901) is much greater.

I got annihilated the one time I was England and opened to the Channel. I'll never do it again.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

England opening to the Channel is far less likely in gunboat, especially with experienced players. Moving to the Channel pretty much guarantees that you'll lose Norway in 1902.

Thanks 2nd, very interesting. And I was focusing more on 1902-03 development.

Could well be that because Im new Im in a bit of low budget games. Doesnt say much about my record in them....

Assuming England doesn't open to the Channel then, it pretty much becomes up to France whether England/France play nice in the beginning or not. France is the one to decide whether he wants to make a play at Germany or England (or Italy I guess, that's usually premature before 1904), and either could be the right play depending on the board position.

France opening to the channel is also largely ineffective in my experience in relation to a sea lion in 1903/4.

4x as old per the New York Times. That might not be wholly accurate, but regardless, 400,000 is much older than any fossil to date. Thoughts?
