RIP Nelson Mandela
Yes, it's seemingly old news, we've all known it's coming, but there's no reason we shouldn't offer a little respect to, literally, one of the greatest and most respected figures in human history. Tough to swallow.

Webdip F2F UK
There's been some interest in the other F2F topic of setting up a UK meet as well, probably in Bristol. Who's interested?
pjmansfield99 (100 D)
27 Nov 13 UTC
I'd be interested if I'm available.
i would if it was convenient and someone else could supply the board etc.!

Isn't Bristol full of gays and immigrants, what kind of message are we sending out to the kids by meeting there ???
Octavious (2701 D)

Nah, Ora went back home. Besides, Bristol has some great cider houses.

You guys know we're on webdip already right? You don't have to say webdip (or Wed Dip), we know...
mendax (321 D)
28 Nov 13 UTC
I'd like it to be in Bristol largely because that's where I live. I also have a board, so that's no problem. I would definitely second the point about Cider houses.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Yay! I'm in, i'd love have an excuse to trip over.

Do we have a date? Do we want to coincide with the other face-to-face meetups (just for the community aspect, and possibly so we can skype their venue... ) I think it would be cool to have an international webdip weekend (even if the international aspect of it is separate events in different countries) But i'm sure there could be some issue with organisation and making dates.

Anyway, the list of interested peoples: pjmansfield99, mendax, orathaic, Socrates Dissatisfied?

we need at least 3 more!

Let's assume a venue in Bristol can be found, and we're aiming for June?
Maniac (189 D(B))

I'm Interested so long asit doesn't clash with other stuff I have going on in June
Maniac (189 D(B))
28 Nov 13 UTC
By the way I'm in Cannock, Staffs if that is a more central locatin for people to travel to, I'll sort the venue.
mendax (321 D)
28 Nov 13 UTC
A venue can almost certainly be found at the uni, if nothing else. Combining with the other meetup would be quite fun also, though time differences would make it slightly more awkward.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
02 Dec 13 UTC
bump. Any more interested UK-ites?
Octavious (2701 D)
02 Dec 13 UTC
Which uni do you have in mind? The pretentious Oxbridge wannabe one or the dump?

I'm certainly interested, even though it will mean me having to actually learn the rules to the game. It's amazing just what level of ignorance you can get away with using this site as a crutch :).
orathaic (1009 D(B))
02 Dec 13 UTC
Venue is a venue, is a venue, I went to the awesome one, i don't know what Oxbridges have to do with anything (but then i did my under grad in the Irish Trinity, with all it's west brit pretentions, so maybe i wouldn't notice)

Irregardless, any venue will do, if the university is a good one then hooray.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
02 Dec 13 UTC
And, you don't need to learn the rule, i'll just adjudicate all the orders... ;)
I'd be interested in a Bristol game in June (again, pending availabilities).
mendax (321 D)
02 Dec 13 UTC
I'm at the University of Bristol. Whilst I'm not sure how pretentious it is, there are undoubtedly a lot of people who tried to get into Oxbridge and failed (myself included).

I was planning to use Realpolitik to adjudicate the orders.

Anyway, so far we have:
1) mendax
2) pjmansfield
3) Socrates Dissatisfied
4) Orathaic
5) Maniac
6) Octavious
7) CancerousAnonymous

So that's a game. It seems that the next question is deciding where we definitely want to be, but it looks like Bristol's taking that one so far?
redhouse1938 (429 D)

@mendax
The University of Bristol is a very respected institution all over the world.
mendax (321 D)
02 Dec 13 UTC
Also, my exams finish on June 6th, so I wouldn't want to play before then.
Octavious (2701 D)
02 Dec 13 UTC
@ red

It doesn't really deserve to be though. It is very much an institution that puts research first (which is admirable) but for which actual students are at best an afterthought (which isn't).

C'mon, mendax. Half of the buildings are styled to look like castles, and the school of law's Wills building would put a lot of Cathedral's to shame. The Hall's of Residence formal dinners look like something out of Hogwarts (I'm sure the House Master glared at me for being too slow to stand when he walked up to the high table), and it treats poor UWE with complete contempt. How much evidence of being pretentious do you need :p?
mendax (321 D)
02 Dec 13 UTC
The old buildings certainly show the aspirations, and yes, Wills Hall is ridiculous. However, the hall I was in for 1st year was just a few blocks of rooms, nothing fancy, and the maths department is a long way from pretentious. It's similar to Durham, Warwick etc in this way.
Octavious (2701 D)
02 Dec 13 UTC
Badock Hall was nothing fancy either (far from it, in fact), but they still insisted on putting on the airs and graces for the formal meals. Still, I'll grant you that the maths department was one of the few grounded in reality.
bristol is more pretentious than durham and warwick, and not as good...
orathaic (1009 D(B))
03 Dec 13 UTC
The music department building is pretty impressive.

Anyway, Mid-June, Bristol. (probably a university venue)

1 table so far.
1) mendax
2) pjmansfield
3) Socrates Dissatisfied
4) Orathaic
5) Maniac
6) Octavious
7) CancerousAnonymous

I don't really think we need an adjudicator to adjudicate orders, because we'll have humans doing it, but i'm fine either way. Ideally we'd like more sign ups, wishlist we'd like to coincide with other webdip f-2-f meetup in the US. But we have the basic foundations of a good meetup.

Do we have a local to organsie a venue (i may be in bristol in the next few weeks, but i can't guarentee anything)
In fairness, Octavious, with some of the latest decisions made by those eldritch abominations known as 'Upper Management', a lot of UWE students are starting to understand why it's held in contempt.
God help those poor arts bastards, banished from St.Matts all the way out to Bower Ashton from next year onwards.
It's increasingly obvious certain individuals with the reins in hand care only for the institution's reputation in business and marketing, and see most other courses as secondary objectives or worse.
I'm just glad i'm getting out this year before all hell breaks loose.
mendax (321 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
I'm in Bristol, so can organise a venue. From the sound of it, CancerousAnonymous is also in Bristol.
Yes, though i'm up Fishponds way.
Octavious (2701 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
Fishponds and UWE? You have my sympathy!

Work, in their infinite wisdom, have seen fit over the past few years to sendus to UWE for training, so I too have experienced their unique method of education. On the plus side you can pass the balk of anything they set you without really trying. On the negative side (for the School of the Built and Natural Environment at least) the time is almost completely wasted.

Is this a game error?
I'm playing a game with some friends, and the last turn's orders ended up very strange. I don't believe that everyone missed turns, but there are almost no orders showing on the map. And even if everyone had missed their turn, there is no explanation for the army in kiel being dislodged. Please take a look: http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=128965

Poor Casting Choices and Underwood Sings--NOT a Few of My Favorite Things!
So...Carrie Underwood doing "The Sound of Music." Kids that were stiffer than cardboard as the Von Trapp family. A black nun in Nazi Austria (I'm all for color-blind casting, but...was there no other role for her, a black nun in Nazi Austria just on the verge of WWII just seems an indication the production team didn't care one bit about the setting) and so on...this was a thing that happened. Thoughts on Carrie Underwood's "The Sound of Music" remake?

giving players their points back.. a bad idea?
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/36/pb75.jpg/

I have never run into this problem before, but this is very frustrating. Giving players under 100 D their points back, puts an unfair twist in the game. In the game i played with this player, we almost had a draw forced against one larger power, and he decided to attack me.
