Welcome Jack! You will find the forum very irreverent and often down right angry. But this is one of the best sites as far as game quality goes.

The points system seems interesting.

Don't get too hung up on it. Points come and go and are just there to limit new players from getting into too many games at once. Check out http://tournaments.webdiplomacy.net for info onour tournaments and leagues as well as the Ghost Rating system. GR is based on chess' ELO system and is a more accurate representation of skill, if an accurate one can be made.

Unfortunately its not. Most of us use the Ghost Rating system ( you can find a link to it in my profile).

7 day phases are quite long. perhaps you should consider 1-3 day phases.

You can put it here. We have a separate threadfor live game adverts, but we often organize games here in the forums. Themed ones or private ones. All sorts.

I put it at 7 days so it's plenty of time for diplomacy and planning also so I can read up on stuff to refresh my memory from various sources.

You'll like that site. Articles and links to freeware software for testing moves and much much more. It even has a set of rule books for the game.

Understandable, but you might have trouble getting a full game with that length.

Also, post the link inthe form of gameID=123456 and it will automatically create the link to the game for you. You can find the game ID in the url of the game.

Actually, it looks 1 day/phase, only the pre-game wait time is set to 7 days. These two are different in the game creation place.

1. Yes, there are a few things different from the rulebook that I noticed after joining. Firstly, you can conduct diplomacy during the retreats/disbanding and building/disbanding phases. See this discussion: threadID=463373. Secondly, you should note that "civil disorder" in the rulebook ≠ "civil disorder"/"CD" that is used on this website. The rules for civil disorder are implemented the same, but the term on this site refers to two consecutive civil disorder phases for a country, which is important because that's the point where other people can jump into the game and take over the absent players' positions. See this discussion: threadID=473713. (There was also a problem for a couple years where the order of civil disorder disbands was skewed, but I think that that issue has been resolved.) Finally, don't take the markings on the map or annotation in the Orders Archive of your game to seriously. The resolution is always accurate, but how that resolution is depicted is not always accurate. See this discussion: threadID=494283.
2. Yes, the difference on this site is that it's always better. The points system, by the way, is your only incentive to take over positions that are in "CD" and the best way to measure your success when you do. The "Game stats" on your profile page and the Ghost-Ratings system mentioned above both penalize you heavily for doing so. See this discussion: threadID=458170.
