Was life better under Labour or Tories?
To be honest I find it difficult to decide between life under Blair or life under Cameron. I have been more prosperous under Cameron but that's due to my own career, and I do remember Blair's regime being a bit intrusive, but maybe that's just false memory.

It's hard to compare them properly because the circumstances of both eras were very different. A lot of what one government gets slated for the opposition would have done near enough the same if it was in power. One of Labour's greatest mistakes was the Iraq war, for example, but I dare say a Tory government would have probably made the same mistake (not a certainty, as our right wingers are less keen on fighting than our left wingers, but I would say it was likely).

I prefer the ideology of the current lot. A lot of Tory voters don't think a lot of Cameron, but I've been generally quite impressed with his decision making. On a personal level things have improved considerably.

On principle and stuff I abhore Cameron, but I can't say life under him has been particularly any worse or better. Maybe that's cos he hasn't done anything.

Pre-1993 Labour were good, post-1993 they lost there way and it was open warfare between Blair and Brown, that is not conducive to effect government.

Pre-1993? When they were in opposition? This is a day to put in the diary, Nigs. I agree with you!

I'm confused by your view that he hasn't done anything, SYnapse. The move in employment from public to private sector has been huge. The return treating parliament with respect regarding international policy has been most welcome. Their economic policy has mostly been working (although I doubt Labour's would have been much different in reality). The move closer to a real debate on Europe has been good too.

And although you don't hear words like "big society" spoken in the media anymore these days, the focus on giving more power to local communities has really made a lot of progress.

Their economic policy is non-existent as far as I can see just let the market do it's thing.

As for a debate on Europe who does that help?

Cameron and the conservatives are truly appalling. The labour party aren't great either, and Blair was a war-mongering, lying, sleazy piece of shit. However, I do believe that we'd have been better off with Labour in the same way that i'd prefer to be punched in the head than have my head smashed in with a baseball bat.

To do nothing is a legitimate policy, although they have done more than that. Red tape has had genuine cuts, government spending has had its cuts in more or less the right places, and they speed of cuts has been eased off when things weren't looking too great (although the spin of both parties pretends that never happened).

The debate on Europe is a big help for all of those who feel that their views have been ignored. There is a large anger at Europe because of this that helps no one except those who campaign on a "Europe is the route of all evil" basis. For the first time ever we will have a real debate on our future in Europe, the good that Europe does will get a genuine airing from supporters across the spectrum, and (assuming we vote to stay in) we'll be able for once to persue a strong British policy in Europe without our politicians jumping at shadows every 5 minutes.

To do nothing in economic terms is a disaster, and I don't want to start an economic debate here but; the role of government is to protect stability and welfare not to generate a profit.

David Cameron is a millionaire (estimated to be worth over £30 million!) and is from an extremely wealthy family, he never has and never will have to experience the sort of work British people do for the national minimum wage. Like most Tories, he is out of touch with the British public.
Octavious (2701 D)

Really? In what sense?
SYnapse (0 DX)
23 Oct 13 UTC
In the sense that when questioned he could not identify the prices of bread and milk to the nearest pound?
Octavious (2701 D)

Which of course makes all the difference. There is little more important a quality in a national leader than his in-depth knowledge of the weekly food shop.

Besides, no matter what he answers he's in trouble. 50p a loaf and 25p a pint is, as we all know, the right answer. However what does he gain by giving such an answer? Most people will assume he's wrong anyway (as everyone pays different amounts for such things and has different ideas about what's reasonable) which is worse than not knowing as it carries with an aura of dishonesty.

The election will prove to you that it does matter whether a leader knows how much his citizens pay for their amenities.
Octavious (2701 D)
23 Oct 13 UTC
The last election proved that it didn't. If you polled voters in 2010 on which of the candidates had a better knowledge of grocery shopping it is without doubt that Cameron would have scored the lowest. Real people don't care about that. What the British public care about is whether he can run a country.

The leadership of the Left don't understand this. They are, to borrow the over-used phrase, out of touch.
SYnapse (0 DX)

You realise you're backing a dead horse? The election has already been won on the cost of living by Labour.

I'm not a Labour supporter, by the way.
Octavious (2701 D)
23 Oct 13 UTC
Labour have successfully identified the public anger at the cost of living. They have yet to convince anyone that they can tackle the problem. If they had achieved this then they would have a huge lead in the opinion polls. That they do not speaks volumes.

Portrait of a CEO
Found this profile in LinkedIN and wanted to share - there are *so* many of you that operate under this delusion that CEO's sit on their asses sucking down caviar and drinking campaign while figuring out ways to stick it to the little guy. If you've ever known one, or know the child of a CEO, you know a guy that is never home, always on the go. THIS guy in this profile is invovled in about 20 different companies...helping other people make it int he world. Yeah...what a bastard!

Capture Your Capital
I once saw someone refer to a modern map game whereby everyone was given a target on the other side of the map that they had to get to and hold. Does anyone know how this was set up (e.g. which did each country have to aim for?) and would anyone be interested in trying to set a game of it up?

Does anyone work in Wall Street?
I started a stock market simulator and am really getting into it. I'd like to learn a lot more to be able to trade some of my own funds once I'm more comfortable. Any recommended reading for someone looking to learn more about investing, chart reading, etc.? There is so much out there I can't tell what is garbage being sold and what is good.

The JSF
Could someone explain the concept and justification of the JSF for me? I've kinda always viewed the whole program as the epitome of military waste, because (as far as I know, please enlighten me) is seems like the Pentagon is replacing perfectly effective planes (the A-10, F22, F18), all specifically suited to their niche with ultra-expensive planes that do the jobs of all models stated above, only at a more generalized and mediocre level.

Hi guys, I've been really bored of the internet lately, so I figured I'd create a thread for all of our favorite pornography. Feel free to post your favorite videos and sites, and don't hold back--if you like really interesting stuff, let us know. I hope that we can create a great pornographic community on Webdiplomacy.net, and maybe even make some of our own!

Tea partiers above average at science
For a fun, completely statistically insignificant, easy-to-misinterpret, and unprocessed statistical datum, see this post by a Yale Law professor on his surprise at finding that being in the tea party correlates positively with scientific knowledge. Should be good for some fun discussion.

NFL Pick 'em: Week 7--Peyton's Homecoming, Rex's Boasting, and Monday's Debacle
We kick off Week 7 of the season tonight with a contest Obi hates--Seahawks and Cardinals, Hate vs. Hate. The unbeaten Broncos travel to Indy as Peyton "comes home" to take on his former team, the Colts. Rex Ryan has his swagger (and mouth) back and says he thinks Jets/Pats this week can be like the Jets won against the Pats...years ago...and Giants/Vikes in a MNF disaster of scheduling. So, that and more, Week 7--PICK 'EM!
