Was life better under Labour or Tories?
To be honest I find it difficult to decide between life under Blair or life under Cameron. I have been more prosperous under Cameron but that's due to my own career, and I do remember Blair's regime being a bit intrusive, but maybe that's just false memory.

Portrait of a CEO
Found this profile in LinkedIN and wanted to share - there are *so* many of you that operate under this delusion that CEO's sit on their asses sucking down caviar and drinking campaign while figuring out ways to stick it to the little guy. If you've ever known one, or know the child of a CEO, you know a guy that is never home, always on the go. THIS guy in this profile is invovled in about 20 different companies...helping other people make it int he world. Yeah...what a bastard!

Capture Your Capital
I once saw someone refer to a modern map game whereby everyone was given a target on the other side of the map that they had to get to and hold. Does anyone know how this was set up (e.g. which did each country have to aim for?) and would anyone be interested in trying to set a game of it up?
SunRa (1049 D)
20 Oct 13 UTC
Not the same but basic idea to have something els to aim for have been played a lot in Sweden.
I remember 1993! We had a training camp (before EDC in was it birmingham)in a cottage in the countryside outside Uppsala. There roleplayingdiplomacy was invented
Idea was to simulate weird playingstyles we could encounter, so all picked a note from a hat and that became their "thing" exampel, you love fleets! If you get builds you always build as many fleets as possible! If you disband fleets first!

You think a draw is better than a win, and you want everyone in it, extream balance of power!

You pick one ally 01 and stay with him whatever happens, even if facing a solo.

Love convoys! Use them when ever you can, offer other to convoy them all the time, and take a offer from someone else all the time.

And so on...

Sorry for derailing.... Just had a walk down memorylane...

(If you wanna play roleplaydiplomacy send me a message, ill gladly "gm" it.

Sounds interesting. I'm more than happy to try anything new if you can get people involved.

I'm very interested in playing what Battalion says, but I don't have any concrete answers. Also, what were the winning conditions? Own both capitals and you win? How do you implement winning, if that makes sense? Since the game only ends when the right amount of SCs is reached... Or are you suggesting playing by email? I'm in either way.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
20 Oct 13 UTC
SunRa's idea just sounds like a headache to me though. I won't be in that.
Battalion (177 D)
20 Oct 13 UTC
implementing winning was the question that I was most looking for answers for. I know it's been played on WebDip before, so I was hoping someone would have a good idea. At the very worst you could just end it as a draw or everyone else resigns/leaves the game. Neither seem ideal though.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
20 Oct 13 UTC
Or 'give' the required SCs to the winner.

I'm guessing it has been played by email though, but that requires a game moderator willing to send a map to everyone each turn and that kind of stuff.

Also you might be better served on vdiplomacy.net.
Less competition but it's pretty much made for variants, so that's where you'll find a lot of variant-lovers.
Battalion (177 D)
20 Oct 13 UTC
Perhaps the best way that SunRa's idea could be used is to decide alliances for countries from the start with the end-goal being a draw between you and your allies.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
20 Oct 13 UTC
That's called team diplomacy.
Battalion (177 D)

So far we have:

1) Me
2) SunRa?
3) Steephie22
4) Hot Fuzz

I like your idea about SCs at the end-game Steephie.

steephie22 (182 D(S))

Right? Anyone disagrees with that?
Hot Fuzz (159 D)
20 Oct 13 UTC
What will be the winning conditions?
Battalion (177 D)
20 Oct 13 UTC
Winning conditions - you capture your designated 'capital' (which is on the other side of the map to your starting position) and hold it in Autumn/Fall. At this point all other nations give up SCs so that the winner wins (if that makes sense). In the case of a draw, play continues until only one person holds their capital in Autumn (other players are allowed to capture theirs in the mean time). Thoughts? Anyone else want to join?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
20 Oct 13 UTC
I think taking a set amount of capitals if there are just some SCs designated capital, or take 2/3 capitals specific to your country, one of which in it and 2 more in hard-to-reach corners...
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
20 Oct 13 UTC
Why don't you do this on a site with this variant?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
20 Oct 13 UTC
Batallion's idea allows you to sort of immigrate towards your designated capital instead of just making your empire bigger, not sure what would be better though.

I have a new and IMO better idea:

We could just set one capital in each power's home territory, so London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Constantinople, Rome and I'm not sure what the capital of Austria would be.

And then you can only build units when you have a capital, and you win with 4 capitals, or just 18 SCs as usual.

Come to think of it, it would be more fun if we take it a step further: you can only build at capitals!

That would make capitals crucial for everyone, and more would be better always, while SCs are still relevant for builds. We may need to do that over mail though since you can't build in foreign SCs on this site, while that is the best part IMO.

bo_sox: what site has it?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
20 Oct 13 UTC
No idea. You could do it by email too.
Battalion (177 D)
20 Oct 13 UTC
bo_sox: I can't find a site with it, and although we could play by email, we could also play it here, perhaps more easily.

Steephie22: the impression I had gained from the game that I previously mentioned was that you had one capital at the opposite side of the board which you had to capture and hold. This means that all countries are trying to get to the other side and getting in each other's way. Alternatively you could try the longer way around. You don't need to hold your home centres (although you obviously can), but could instead gain them and lose them as you go.

I'm happy to play whatever variant is most popular.

Anyone who has been interested, read this post: As was suggested by someone else (can't find who with a quick skim, but thanks!), I have gone onto vDip (variantDip) to gauge interest over there. It seems much more suited to the idea (it even has a 'concede' button). May I suggest that anyone who wants to play signs up to vDip (http://vdiplomacy.net/) and gets involved with the forum thread there (http://vdiplomacy.net/forum.php?threadID=48207). Get involved!

JECE: Thanks for your help too!

I think you might be talking about the Left Shift variant--I played it a couple of times back in the old days on AOL Diplomacy (pbem). It's fun--you have to fight or negotiate your way back to your home centers before you can build, so it's very, very important to protect both your centers and your units, because a disband can't be replaced until you've held a center long enough to build on it.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
23 Oct 13 UTC
Pretty sure that's not what he means but that's a fun variant too.

Does anyone work in Wall Street?
I started a stock market simulator and am really getting into it. I'd like to learn a lot more to be able to trade some of my own funds once I'm more comfortable. Any recommended reading for someone looking to learn more about investing, chart reading, etc.? There is so much out there I can't tell what is garbage being sold and what is good.

The JSF
Could someone explain the concept and justification of the JSF for me? I've kinda always viewed the whole program as the epitome of military waste, because (as far as I know, please enlighten me) is seems like the Pentagon is replacing perfectly effective planes (the A-10, F22, F18), all specifically suited to their niche with ultra-expensive planes that do the jobs of all models stated above, only at a more generalized and mediocre level.

Tea partiers above average at science
For a fun, completely statistically insignificant, easy-to-misinterpret, and unprocessed statistical datum, see this post by a Yale Law professor on his surprise at finding that being in the tea party correlates positively with scientific knowledge. Should be good for some fun discussion.

NFL Pick 'em: Week 7--Peyton's Homecoming, Rex's Boasting, and Monday's Debacle
We kick off Week 7 of the season tonight with a contest Obi hates--Seahawks and Cardinals, Hate vs. Hate. The unbeaten Broncos travel to Indy as Peyton "comes home" to take on his former team, the Colts. Rex Ryan has his swagger (and mouth) back and says he thinks Jets/Pats this week can be like the Jets won against the Pats...years ago...and Giants/Vikes in a MNF disaster of scheduling. So, that and more, Week 7--PICK 'EM!
