Best moves in a gunboat.
I haven't been in a lot of gunboat games, so I don't have a lot of great moves under my belt, but I know a lot of you guys might have some interesting (succesful) moves. Maaybe some convoys? Maybe something as cool as Army in Serbia support army in London to Greece? Multi-country convoys?

Diplomacy during retreat and disbanding phases?
Why isn't diplomacy during these phases blocked, as required by the rules? Isn't this game supposed to be true to the original rules? It seems to me like this could speed up the game a bit for these phases. Is it allowed because players would be able to cheat and talk anyway through e-mail or instant messaging?

"
4. RETREAT AND DISBANDING PHASE
. . .
No diplomacy or discussion takes place prior to writing retreat orders – all countries are on their own.
. . .
WRITING RETREATS
If two or more units must retreat, the retreat locations are immediately (and without discussion) written down by the players concerned.
. . .
ADJUSTING NUMBER OF UNITS
. . .
As with retreats, gaining and losing units (collectively known as “adjustments”) are written and revealed simultaneously without discussion or diplomacy of any kind.

The diplomacy in retreats/builds issue has been raised before. The fact is that it would not add anything to the game to halt negotiations on retreats.

This way is better. Speeding up the game is key in FtF, not so much here.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))

And as you said, people can talk out of site if they really want to anyway.
JECE (1253 D)
06 Aug 09 UTC
But this changes the game more than for just speed. This limits your ability to interact with your allies and leaves an elemant of uncertainty during the decision-making process for these phases. For example, there is no way in the real rules to discuss how to organize retreats without all units getting disbanded (units who retreat to the same privince are disbanded). It is not a complete chage, but gameplay is significantly altered, so I thought I would point this out.
I think it that discussions during these phases actually can speed up the game. If one player is taking a long time to finalize a retreat, other players can start talking about the next move round, so that when the game finally advances, they are ready to place their orders.

i agree that it changes the game a little bit, but i don't see an easy way to enforce it here. and since we have to have the retreat and build phases the same length as other phases (b/c people can only get online so often) then we might as well be able to talk during that time.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
06 Aug 09 UTC
And many players on here don't talk that much as it is, so it's better to offer opportunities to talk whenever possible.

Onar (131 D)

I was thinking based on willingness to join.
But I have 1370 posts, just in case.
48. Does that mean I have to run a depth charge to qualify?

Supporting Hold Question
Say I have an army moving to a providence. And it gets stood-off. So it is forced to hold. Then say I have another army support the hold on my original moving army. Does that support stand? My army was originally moving, but was then forced to hold.

Friendly Sword is going Dutch!!
Hey all! In a week and a half I'm going to be leaving for Europe, and will end up studying in Maastricht, Holland. I'm just wondering if we have any Dutch/Belgian/West Germans around here from the region who would be willing to give me an account of the area, and places of interest. I am extremely excited! :) :)

Rules question
What are the conditions for getting a supply center? e.g. if I go A Mar-Spa turn one and then go A Spa-Por, do i get SPA and POR? or do I need to have units in both of the end of the second turn prior to the build?

A slight dilemma...again.
Hello!  This happened before.  We have a live game which we would like to unpause, but Russia hasn't been seen forever.  Chrisp forced him to go CD, so we were going to unpause it tomorrow night.  But, he rejoined.  Stayed long enough to become not CD anymore.  The bastard.

question about the rules of dislodgement
If two players try to move into the same country and standoff, but then one players territory is taken and the only place that that players unit may retreat to is the territory that could not be taken earlier in the turn, what happens to the dislodged unit?

Kestas: Where's my game gone?
This is my second attempt to get a solution to this problem.

The name of the game was "Diplomat First, Commander Second II". The game is missing completely. It isn't active, it isn't finished, it simply isn't there any more. When I click on the link I get "Game not found; ensure a valid game ID has been given"

HELP Clarification
I have a unit in Norway and a unit in Sweden. They wish to exchange places. Will the game let me do this or count this as a block?
i.e. Unit at Norway moves to Sweden - and - Unit at Sweden moves to Norway. Will these moves be successful or not?

August Ghost-Ratings List: http://phpdiplomacy.tournaments.googlepages.com/home2
I am away at the start of the month, so, to avoid the "Where is the Ghost-rating list" thread, I've done them already!
There were some anomalies in the data which appear to have been straightened out (3 games claiming to have finished on 1st Jan 1970, for instance), so I had to start from scratch. This takes a lot of time, so this data is from 29th August.
