Ah, the North American threesome! Three go in... one comes out! Well, maybe two, but certainly not three! The trick is to not be the one getting ganged up on.
Or, at least, not the _only_ one getting ganged up on.
I decide to just pick an ally from the start, and see how it goes. USA! You're my buddy. I'll leave you alone. Quebec! I'm going to attack you. No hard feelings.
This, of course, doesn't work out in the slightest. Read on to see how!
So, Quebec opens conservatively, while USA throws everything north, ditching Mexico. He sends his army east, at least, which is promising.
Naturally, he proceeds to attack me (_and_ Quebec) anyway, taking British Columbia to... weaken me, I guess. Dude, I'm obviously attacking Quebec. Do the concepts of "ally" or "not currently my enemy" make sense to you? Now you've got both me and Quebec pissed at you!
Incidentally, Quebec is also pissed at me, but I'm hoping that he will overlook that minor detail.
Elsewhere, this first year is rather odd! Brazil attacks Argentina while the latter offers him peace. SA walks out of BAT to defend against an attack which never happens. SA, FA, Oz, India, and China all clash with each other and get only a single build each.
And there are a surprising number of neutral centers left! Indian Territory is an unusual one, and so is BAT! Mexico and Colombia are also neutral, along with Mozambique, Morocco, Scandinavia, Lanzhou, and Bangladesh! That's a whopping nine neutral centers vacant after the first year! Plus South Pole, of course, but that's unattainable so I'm not really counting it.
-2001-
I throw my forces at USA, while he continues his two pronged attack. Quebec, alas, offers USA peace. Shit.
In the fall, I retake BCo, but lose Alaska. USA is still attacking everyone, Quebec is still attacking me, and Argentina is... fighting both Brazil and SA? Alas, poor SA. This time, he _doesn't_ defend San. So of course Argentina attacks it this time.
Also, PRussia is slaughtering China, and Europe has found his way into Turkey.
-2002-
USA is ballsy, I'll give him that. He's still attacking both me and Quebec with everything he's got. Alas, he's getting away with it courtesy of Quebec not fighting back.
I take Indian Territory and close in on California, but USA is sailing all over my home centers. Gotta love Mutually Assured Destruction!
I decide to try something clever in the fall, and leave BCo unprotected in order to attack California and Texas simultaneously while protecting Manitoba. This almost works, as I do get the USA home centers, but alas USA decides to hit BCo, taking it. Worse, he also manages to steal Venezueala from Brazil, meaning the bastard actually gets a build!
I get one too, at least, plopping an army into NWT. At this point, though, I really wish that I'd sent my eastern fleet to Beaufort instead.
-2003-
At this point, all normal strategies are out the window. I'm just trying to defend my possessions and counter anticipated moves as best I can. The USA fleet in NPO causes all sorts of problems, but Quebec isn't friendly either, so literally none of my centers are safe.
My situation has improved little by the end of the year. I have two home centers now, but no room to build, and with Quebec destroying my eastern fleet I find myself with more centers than units.
On the bright side, my counterattack against USA has left him in quite a predicament himself, with his empire effectively divided into three isolated segments, and only one home center (Florida). He would be easy pickings if Quebec actually bothered to attack him, or if South America wasn't embroiled in war.
The game also suffers its first casualty at this point. Despite starting the year with three centers, South Africa is steamrolled by Kenya.
-2004-
Quebec seizes Northwest Territory in the spring, leaving me in an increasingly dire position. I begin offering him supports in desperation, hoping that he will finally turn on the Americans.
Remarkably, I manage to hold onto my other centers, but yet _another_ threat looms as a desperate Brazil starts retreating toward my southern holdings. He's already screwed Europe by fleeing into Great Britain (he also takes Venezuela, but I don't look at that in the same light because USA took it from him first).
On the bright side, USA _finally_ is forced to disband that NPO fleet.
-2005-
Brazil irks me by taking Texas, even though I'm fighting both the nations that screwed him over. Okay, sure, survive another year, and help out immensely the two players who took you out.
Also, I was hoping that if he _did_ try for it, he would bounce out USA. *Sigh*
Meanwhile, Quebec NMRs. This has the effect of leaving Godthab wide open to Brazil.
In the fall, Brazil has the gall to offer me a support move against USA from my Texas. Go take a long walk off a short pier.
Elsewhere, I retake Yukon, but Quebec decides to show up just in time to take BCo. Meanwhile, PRussia attacks... Alaska?
I disband my army in Nevada, focusing my efforts on hindering Quebec. I'm probably screwed, but if he's going to insist on killing me, I might as well take him with me.
