Great game, Bonaparte, well played! Of course, you were greatly helped by England, Germany, Italy and Austria, who played like total noobs.

Tell you what, if I were playing that and saw England disband that fleet in the channel, the red flag would have gone up for me. I can't tell if he CD'd based only on the map, but that was quite a break.

I intentionally gave France all my lands. that should have been obvious. Germany and Russia gave me nothing to work with. my opening move to Clyde was to indicate to Russia (who I hoped then would not be advancing to block an entry into Norway) that I wanted peace in the North and intended to advance on France from locations not typically seen before.
Zmaj (215 D(B))

With that kind of thinking, brainbomb, you'll always be a loser.
Bonaparte23 (695 D)
15 Nov 12 UTC
Yes, quite a shame germany just cd'd like that, takes away some of the fun of the victory. But thanks Zmaj, I did it without ever stabbing :D Have quite a record as France now, I think it's my 3rd solo as france already. Bonaparte what's in the name xD
brainbomb (290 D)

I would have been anyways. Russia would have retaken Norway with a swift build in stp anyway. With france moving in behind me, and clearly Germany wasn't going to do me any favors. I was dead before I ever made a move clearly
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
15 Nov 12 UTC
You didn't get anything to work with from Germany and Russia because England is a sucky gunboat country. However, if you were given nothing to work with by Germany and Russia, why the hell did you force your way into the channel?

Played badly, couldn't hold on until Turkish support arrived (but France got the required centres in the North anyway).
brainbomb (290 D)

France was hell bent on advancing also. I knew that. the channel move was to delay the advance a tiny bit longer. I could have built again in the third year when I had 2 units. Whats the point, its just an easy drawn out French takeover, and Germany would just take Edinburgh too.

France and Germany usually end up stalemating even if they do fight, so England's only realistic shot is to either hit Germany early or somehow hope for a WT to evolve. That's how you played the opening and that's why I prefer an opening to Skagerrak. You can keep Germany out of Denmark and only slightly piss Russia off. If it's stopped, you're screwed, but if you don't do it, you get screwed anyway.

And yeah, your opening was pretty bad.
brainbomb (290 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
Oh well, usually I prefer to make moves out of obscurity which puzzle people. I like people to say.. "what is that?" "who is he after?" but in this case everyone was gunning for me anyway
Bonaparte23 (695 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
I absolutely hate playing england in gunboat too. In order to have a decent chance at a draw or solo you either need to be in a england/french alliance or break rhough in the mao early on. The france/german alliance is easier to pull of in gunboat, which is what I tried in fall 1901 by supporting ruhr to burgundy instead of trying to bounce it or trying to take munich.
Zmaj (215 D(B))

England is wonderful because it has the most possibilities. No power really sucks except Austria.

And Italy definitely made some terrible moves. Going back to Naples instead of Tyr?! Supporting Albania into Ionian, where you should have taken the stand instead?! Sheesh...
Bonaparte23 (695 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
Btw Brainbomb, If you would have signaled pro-french intentions by building a fleet in edinburg instead of london, I may have chosen to trust you and concentrate on italy. However with the fleet in NAO and a fleet in london, I had very little choice. Not the smartest thing to do maybe when france is your only possible friend in a gunboat in which russia/germany made anti-england openings.
seth24c (5659 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
Just saying that is one of the worst English openings I have seen since my first game as England on this site, when I supported myself into the north sea in s01
Actually that might be even worse than mine ;)
Bonaparte23 (695 D)

Personal take Zmaj. Gunboat for me at the moment: 1 France, 2 Turkey, 3 Germany, 4 Italy, 5 Austria, 6 Russia, 7 England.

Thank you seth, I appreciate that. We always talk about how bad something is when it doesn't work. Like in football when someone tries to run a reverse and they lose 36 yards.
And yet we speak of brilliance when something obscure tricks people, like when the coach goes for the fake punt on his own 8 yard line on 4th and 2 and wins the game.
Bonaparte23 (695 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
Although I like your creativeness of moving to NOA in fall 1901, this planned attack on France should always be combined with a move to english channel (and thus a move to wales from your army). Moreover why move to clyde when the same thing can be done by moving to Norwegian sea? Very odd opening.
brainbomb (290 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
I'm not going to defend the opening but just imagine that the move had shown Russia I wanted to have peace and we could DMZ the North. Imagine that he had not moved to STP. he sees I have no intent to advance on Barents Sea at all. So he doesnt build in STP and we have ourselves peace in the North.
brainbomb (290 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
Yea well moving to Norwegian sea would make him think I wanna fight him was my logic there. but its a shitty opening end of story. i wont be doing it again
brainbomb (290 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
And yer right about moving to EC also but I wouldnt have gotten a build at all in that circumstance either
Bonaparte23 (695 D)
16 Nov 12 UTC
If you want to show you want peace with russia, why don't you just move to the english channel? That works just as good, but give you way more options.

So brainbomb if Russia doesn't move to st. P are you going to convoy there? Because I doubt Russia will like that, move north sea there? Then you look like fresh meat to Germany.

The only way this move has any merit is if ...
Nevermind it doesn't have any merit.
Yes I am being hard on you, but it will be good for you :)

Although I do see some remarkable differences in personal preference, thieir seems to be quite a consensus that Turkey is a great gunboat country and Austria and Russia are sub-par too bad. Without the ability to talk, they face the 'too many neighboors' problem: bad start = often eaten up, or kept alive just to keep thw balance, good start= too many players that hear the alarm bell compensate it, leaving you a a bad spot again.
To me, Austria's success or failure is entirely a function of Italy's attitude, but I love its expansive potential.

Hypothetical
I am thinking about running a tournament, but I have a question regarding the impact of a scoring system. What do you think the results would be of a scoring system based on the following:

What if rankings are assigned by number of solos, with a tie-breaker being total centres?

This may seem like a silly question, but I've never had a fireplace before, so...
Where do I get it? Most of the trees around here are pine, so I can't burn what falls from storms. A cord goes for close to $300, which seems like a lot, but I don't have anything to compare it to.
