Well, I wanted to pummel France right off the bat, but then Germany proved to be a total mad dog who had to be put down. From that point, I had to make sure France couldn't run wild with Italy utterly ignoring him and play for the draw. Anyway, good game to all.

Colorblind Confusion
Is there any way to change the settings on my account so that in the Global messages it says somewhere (in text) which country had made each post? I am unable to discern the posts of Germany from those of Austria. Italy's are also hard to distinguish.

Oh, and England and France have basically the same color. Is there anything I can do to tell these messages apart?

Quick rules question
Which rule takes priority?
*A dislodged unit's support order fails
**A province to which a support move order is submitted can not affect the province from which the support emanates.

Rule Query
There is a French Army in Paris. There are English Armies in Bre and Gus. There is an English Fleet in the mid atlantic.
Brest attacks Paris with support from Gus. The English Fleet supports Gus.
What happens if the French army attacks Brest or Gus?
GrandSlam (100 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
If Paris attacks Gus does the support get cut, Paris bounce and then Brest bounce and there is no movement of these units?
(Seems a nice way for one unit to fight three other units in one turn)

If it attacks Gus does the fleet bounce the French army and still leaves the English armies 2 on 1 in Paris? Forcing a retreat?

If Paris attacks Brest i think the Paris will bounce and be forced to retreat with Brest taking Pairs.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)

I assume you mean Gas, as in Gascony. A unit can _not_ cut the support aimed at itself, _unless_ the unit giving the support is dislodged. If Par moves to Gas, Gas just shakes off the attack, laughs and helps Bre take Par. Par is forced to retreat. Same thing happens if Par attacks Bre. If there is an A Mar that attacks Gas instead, the support will be cut.
CSteinhardt (9560 D(B))
23 Apr 12 UTC
A move from Par to Gas would cut Gas support to anyplace *other than* Paris, but would not cut a support for Bre - Par. So, Gas S Bre - Par, Par - Gas results in Par being dislodged. Because it was dislodged from Bre, it will not be allowed to retreat to Bre.

If Par - Bre with power 1 and Bre - Par with power 2, Par gets into Bre, and Bre retreats, and again cannot retreat to Paris.

However, if there is a support for Par - Bre, it would bounce 2v2), and if some other unit (say, Mar) is ordered to Gas, that would cut the Gas support.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
Also, there is no need for mid-atlantic to support Gas in your scenario. Even without any additional support, Gas can still support into Par even if Par attacks him. It's a 1 on 1 leaving Gas intact and still supporting.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
I think you got those mixed up CS. "Par - Bre with power 1 and Bre - Par with power 2" would not let Par into Bre.

Indeed I did. That whole thing about 2 being bigger than 1. :) Sorry, it's a bit late here!

Oh, right, it's the time of the year where you get to see the sun. :) [Kidding, I love Stockholm!] Based in Japan at the moment, so I guess it's not all that late yet.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
It sure is. Although Stockholm's not that bad. I grew up far further north, on the polar circle, where we got at best one hour of sunlight per day in December. I guess you can go up to Hokkaido if you're feeling sentimental for some northern Europe :)

ok, thank you very much. I thought the English would laugh at the French attempt but I wasnt clear. Now to add more of the story.
French armies in Paris and Marseilles. English Armies in Brest, Gascony and Spain and English fleet in MAO and the Gulf of Lyon.
Brest attacks Paris with support from Gas. Spain attacks Marseilles with support from Gulf. MAO supports Gas.
If Marseilles attacks Gas that will cut the support of Gas supporting Brest - Paris?
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
Yes, it will. Marseilles will be dislodged and have to flee, but before being dislodged, his attack cuts Gascony's support. Once again, the fleet in Mid-Atlantic is not needed in this scenario. The same exact result would happen without Mid-Atlantic supporting Gas.
Zmaj (215 D(B))
23 Apr 12 UTC
I think what confuses GrandSlam (and confused me for quite a while) is that a supporting army, if attacked from elsewhere, will not support anything REGARDLESS of whether it is supported itself. That's why MAO is irrelevant, GrandSlam.

Idea for balancing the game
Has anybody ever tried putting Turkey in control of Bulgaria in Spring 1901 and have him start in CD? Italy could choose to build either a fleet or an army in Rome as he chose. I wonder if that would work...
