So I just finished a KAO cigar...
I kept reading rave reviews and hearing good things from my buddies at the poker room. All I can say is meh. They aren't as good as my beloved A. Fuente Gran Reserva Hemingway's Give me a Signature or a Classic any day, and if I have time, a Masterpiece will do just fine.

What, no cigar smokers here?
Draugnar (0 DX)

And I typo'd. It's a CAO cigar. Either way - meh...

Romeo y Julieta is my go-to cigar. Of course, I don't like to spend much money on cigars and the good cigar shop near me closed, so the selection is limited.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Not a bad cigar for the money, abge. When I was starting out, I often smoked them.

Draugnar, if you want to keep trying CAO's go to Cigars International and get the CAO Dream Team sampler. I've ordered it twice.

If you want to get me anything for X-mas make is a La Gloria Cubana Serie R Belicoso.

Are you still not allowed to import cuban cigars to us?
largeham (149 D)
22 Apr 12 UTC
I don't like cigars. They go out too quickly, so you have to keep puffing; and being used to cigarettes, I inhale, which isn't a fun thing to do with cigars.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Apr 12 UTC
I have the StogieBoys.com CAO sampler, so I still have 4 more to try in time. They are in the mix-n-match humidor so they don't corrupt my beloved Hemingway's.

Had one of those the other day- a single one, not the whole box, obviously, but it was pretty good.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Apr 12 UTC
Yeah, Acid is a good cigar. And I guess the CAO was good, but it was a stronger cigar with a darker, oily wrapper so had a bit more bite than I like.
iMurk789 (100 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
I can't say I've ever had one of those. I've just recently started smoking cigars, so I have very limited experience. Any suggestions in that general price range are welcome though!
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Apr 12 UTC
Acid is a "flavored" cigar, so you might find the other mild conneticut shade wrappers in the price range more harsh, but you should still try them.

Macanudo Cafe is a mild cigar. A decent cigar (not one of the little cigarellos) will run from $5-$8 individually or they can be bought in boxes from 10 cigars on up. The Macanudo Cafe Prince Phillip 10 pack runs about $65 and is a nice 49 ring and 7" long. Here is the Macanudo selection at Stogie Boys.

http://www.stogieboys.com/index/manufacturers_id/63?sort=20a

The thing to remember about cigars as that the smaller the ring size, the hotter it tends to burn (small makes it more cigarette like), but even that has some variance depending on how tight or loose the leave is packed. Also, smaller ring sizes naturally burn quicker than the equivalent length in a larger ring size. So experiment and find a strength and a ring size you like (47-52) along with a blend you like and then pick the length based on how long you have available to smoke a cigar. Too long and you either have to find a way to save it and finish it later and too short will leave you wanting. My personal favorite is a 47 ring 6 incht hat takes 40-45 minutes to smoke. Or an hour with a scotch in hand sitting out back watching the wildlife.

Draugnar (0 DX)

@Gobble - There is a huge difference between puffing on a pipe or cigar and smoking a cigarette. *Huge* difference...

I have quite a few cubans. They were certainly good, but I honestly don't see what the big deal is.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
23 Apr 12 UTC
Oh, and I went through a pipe phase. It was certainly a lot cheaper, but
1) It was a huge pain to load and clean
2) I found myself smoking way too much cause it was cheap.
Dutchy_ (0 DX)
23 Apr 12 UTC
Shit why smoke it if you don't inhale? I inhale my cigars
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Apr 12 UTC
I agre, abge. Cubans aren't any better than DR or Honduras, especially when the crops are from Cuban seed.

As far as pipes, it's the one thing the wife lets me smoke in the house, so that is my winter time or bad weather smoke.

@Dutchy - I inhale pipes (have a nice churchwarden where the smoke is nice and cool). But cigars aren't really intended to be inhaled.
iMurk789 (100 D)

@Dutchy- You smoke it for the flavor, I do somewhat for the experience, it's just relaxing.

Getting ready to like up a Perdomo Patriarch Belicoso. Really nice aroma. The wrapper is a little uneven at the tip, but it is below where I will cut it. I've had good luck with Perdomo's lately.

Umm, I would also prefer to avoid lung problems.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Apr 12 UTC
Which is why you puff, not inhale, cigars.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
24 Apr 12 UTC
Unlike nearly all cigarette smokers, most cigar smokers do not inhale. Although cigar smokers have lower rates of lung cancer, coronary heart disease, and lung disease than cigarette smokers, they have higher rates of these diseases than those who do not smoke cigars.

All cigar and cigarette smokers, whether or not they inhale, directly expose their lips, mouth, tongue, throat, and larynx to smoke and its toxic and cancer-causing chemicals. In addition, when saliva containing the chemicals in tobacco smoke is swallowed, the esophagus is exposed to carcinogens. These exposures probably account for the similar oral and esophageal cancer risks seen among cigar smokers and cigarette smokers

Also, Fagnaur is a stupid cunt.

mapleleaf you had to add in the last sentence didn't you.
But mapleleaf is right for the first two paragraphs; smoking cigars is definitely bad for your health.

You know, maple, I could unmute you when you do the first two paragraphs. If you'd just stop being a fucking asshole with the 'Fagnaur' shit, I probably would. But every time I hit ESC to see something good you say, you always end it with that shit, so on mute you stay.

Puffing a cigar a few times a year or once a month at most is a risk I'm willing to take
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Apr 12 UTC
I have one, maybe two a week. Hardly the same level of intake as a chain smoker, even for the throat and mouth. It's like comparing my scotch habit (one with each cigar, usually) with a beer guzzling, chain smoking, bowler. The only positive the bowler has over me is the exercise he gets by throwing the ball down the lane.
Emac (0 DX)
25 Apr 12 UTC
The Perdomo Patriarch Torpedo from a couple of nights ago was one strong cigar. One of those that had me kind of clamy and light-headed after smoking it. I will go for a milder stick next time. If you like a full-bodied cigar this is the stick for you. Kicks like a mule.
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Apr 12 UTC
Probably not my taste then. I'm definitely a light to medium body cigar guy. Conneticut shade wrapper all the way.
