Webdiplomacy Tournaments?
I am interested in doing some kind of diplomacy tournament but I do not know how to get started. Also, I saw a thread about GR ratings, and I was curious how you get involved to have a GR rating. Any help would be appreciated :]

Well, there are a variety of tournaments on this site. There is the Leagues, which are starting up right now, the Masters, which I'm in charge of (and are looking for reliable subs) and several gunboat tourneys out there. Each of these require several months of dedication to. Dropping out is highly frowned upon.

http://sites.google.com/site/phpdiplomacytournaments

Also, Ghost Ratings are done for everyone on the site starting after you complete a game and are done on a monthly basis. The Ghostmaker updates them, but he has been on a hiatus and they haven't been updated recently. That ranking system is similar to that of chess ranking systems. Each player, according to their points available (ghost points, not the ones next to your name, you start with 100) contributes 1/35th of their points (I think that's the right fraction) to the pot, and whoever wins takes all of them, and in draws they are split evenly. Thus if a highly ranked player draws with several lower ranked ones, he could go down in ranking. PPSC, World, and Ancient maps are weighed differently

I looked at the GR rating list by searching for my name but I was unable to find my name. It does sound interesting though. Is there a low league for tournaments I can join to try it out? I would be interested in dedicating time to a tournament

"Thus if a highly ranked player draws with several lower ranked ones, he could go down in ranking."

It would actually take a pretty extreme example for that to happen. For just about any example other than MM playing against 6 completely new players or a 6/7WD, drawing will increase the players ratings.

Your name gets removed if you're inactive and the November GR aren't posted yet. You show up in the All-time list though.

Thank you. I have just recently been reinterested in diplomacy and I really enjoy it so I am looking for more ways to enjoy the game with experienced players :]
Not really. Say Eden (GR 5) joins a game. Given the 1/35th percentage, he puts in about 18.5 D of GR. Say the other 6 players were my level (GR 135). Each of us would enter about 7.25 D. So that puts a total of 62 D in the game. If there was a 4-way draw, then Eden would get back 15.25 D for the 18.5 he entered.

Goldfinger, do I have to register anywhere if I am interested in a tournament?

Yeah, you're right. My statement was certainly hyperbolo.

But let's look at you (rank 135, rating 253) against 6 of me (rank 595, rating 126).

You would get 7.2 for a 4WD compared to the 7.2 you put in. (Jeez that example worked out strangely perfect). You're ranked over 400 positions over me but would come out neutral from a 4WD.

The GR skyrocket for the first 20 or so and then even out. For most people, a draw - even a 4WD - is a positive outcome. And that's the beef I have with GR. You're rewarded for drawing (or winning) with better opponents but you're not adequately penalized for drawing (or losing) with lower opponents.

Spartan, people will post in the forum when the tournaments are starting and who is eligible to join. You just have to keep an eye out for it and message when you're interested.
@Yonni - if other people gain more than you, its technically a net loss.

Also, there was a thread on the Leagues signup if you dig a bit. If not, PM Draugnar

"if other people gain more than you"

All games are zero-sum. If you gain anything then it's a win. At least, that's my understanding of it.

Ghost rating
Tried to look through the forum but unearthing old posts is so cumbersome. What's the status on the current Ghost rating. I know the Ghostmaker (was that his name?) is on hiatus, but IIRC he said he would continue posting the ratings, no?

There is a world game, Funny Story-2. Since I don't know how to delay a start, will begin in 5 mins. Can you tell me either how to delay it, or feel free to join the game.

Game Starts
Is it possible to delay the start of a game? Because recently I have been forced to remake a game due to a lack of players. The game is Funny Story-2. Also is it possible for a game to start with less than max. players like in the board game.

Is this period set in stone, or does it get truncated if everyone joins the match right away? Are the first orders always due (2 * phase length) from game creation, or could it be sooner?

a noob question
ok as a noob to this great game I have a question, when I move into a new country with a supply center, on the next turn it shows my unit there with a little square that is my colour and the country is still the same colour as the "enemy". why is this? do I need to leave my army to "hold" the country for a turn? or am I miss understanding the rules?
