Webdiplomacy Tournaments?
I am interested in doing some kind of diplomacy tournament but I do not know how to get started. Also, I saw a thread about GR ratings, and I was curious how you get involved to have a GR rating. Any help would be appreciated :]

This was an ANON GUNBOAT game. Just mentioning that you're a participant in the game is against the rules.

Oh guess I shouldn't have posted in the live games thread saying I was joining then. Ooops. *eye roll* Oh and Crispy did too, so did Lando. Wow.. lots of rule breakers out tonight.

@Draug Yes I did, he should if need be, be within his rights to explain that he needs to go, and request other accommodate him. Which he did.

@damian - That sentence made no sense. Can you please try rewording it so I can understand what you are saying?
Geofram (130 D(B))

Don't play retarded with me Damian.
After play has started, you don't talk about the game.
Players had been eliminated, there were clear differences between the positions of players on the board. Bringing up a discussion of the game at that point was wrong.

If you want to have a rule that says "X player can ask for a draw/cancel if he has to go" you need to do that within your club and clearly state it. Because outside of that specialised group's rules, voting draw and cancel is the ONLY thing crispy is allowed to do.
damian (675 D)
28 Nov 11 UTC
@Draug: Sure thing.
I did tell Geo that I thought it was bullshit, because if a player in a game has to leave and he posts to explain that and requests his fellow players accommodate him it shouldn't be against the rules

@Geo, Draug and Damian: If you are in the Bluebombers vs Lions thread, you must discuss the Bluebombers vs Lions game. I bet none of you even watched.
damian (675 D)

I'm not playing retarded. I'm making a point. It wasn't an anon-game. It was semi-anon already. Meaning that posting about it, doesn't break anonymity so long as you don't give away which country you are playing.

Which is stupid. He should be able to explain his situation to his fellow players.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Nov 11 UTC
Thanks damian. But as Geo said, it *is* against the general rules of gunboat. Period. Just like breaking the law, ignorance or need is not an excuse. He should strictly have put in a cancel or draw (or both) and been done with it.
Geofram (130 D(B))

Understand this:

There is nothing that can happen in a game. Not a six-player NMR, not a confession of cheating, not the most brilliant convoy you've ever seen, that will ever allow you to talk about an ongoing game without breaking the rules. Yes, I'm going to the extreme to make my point, but the rule still stands.

And breaking the rules is going to mean a lot more than it does right now very soon.
damian (675 D)
28 Nov 11 UTC
He did. But because of the circumstance. Namely the first turn NMR and the constant CD's he wasn't able to actually express anything to any of us.

Thus the need for him to be like... look guys. Problem.
damian (675 D)
28 Nov 11 UTC
Fine. Well when the last of my games finishes up. I guess I should find another site then. Because that's a stupid rule.
Geofram (130 D(B))
28 Nov 11 UTC
People are going to NMR and CD in live games. If you can't accept that and you can't accept that players might refuse to draw after five hours, you shouldn't play live games.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Nov 11 UTC
With an attitude like that, good riddance to bad company...
damian (675 D)
28 Nov 11 UTC
The point is less about NMRs and CDs and more about the rule in general, a flat out ban on discussing ongoing games, for whatever reason. Is in my opinion detrimental and likely to lead to a series of unfortunate witch hunts and screaming.

I have no desire to participate in a site which has rules that I consider to the detriment of myself enjoying playing.
damian (675 D)
28 Nov 11 UTC
That said, we'll see how I feel in the morning, once I've had some sleep.

Right now shifting back to another site is looking very tempting.
Draugnar (0 DX)

You can stay, but the attitude can hit the road.
Geofram (130 D(B))
28 Nov 11 UTC
For whatever reason?
Not discussing ongoing games outside of the game is a rule because doing so jeopardises the integrity of the game. This should be obvious for gunboat, public press, and true anonymous games, but also semi-anonymous and non-private games.

Bringing the game to the forum has a good chance of involving players that are not in the game. This is undesirable for so many reasons. And now every player must watch a forum thread and the game lest they miss an important detail. There's a reason why they are separate and every player should respect that.

In a press game, you have NO excuse for bringing it to the forum.
In a gunboat game, you have NO excuse for typing words on your keyboard that have anything to do with the game.

That covers every base for GOOD reason and that's why they are rules. You're wrong for thinking they're stupid, but regardless, the fact will always remain that you're not allowed to break those rules.

@damian, this is the fourth time in an hour that you've said "oh well, I guess I'll leave."
This is not me telling you good riddance, I would never do that. I don't want anything for this community but growth. But I will say that if you except to sway the opinions of others based on you being a semi-respected member of this community that is threatening to leave because of a rule you think is silly, you should reconsider. It's childish, akin to refusing to move your feet because your parents wouldn't buy you a lolly.

@Draugnar, whilst I agree with you that this thread has turned away from any decent discussion of the rules, you really shouldn't authoritarily antagonise damian for his behaviour. It is counter-productive and really annoying.
Geofram (130 D(B))

This is not a new rule. We're just tired of people not respecting it.

Is it unreasonable to wish for a fail-safe for anonymous gunboat games re:CDs/cancels other than "oh well, you should expect to waste 6 hours of your time?" or "don't play anonymous gun boats"?

Tried to look through the forum but unearthing old posts is so cumbersome. What's the status on the current Ghost rating. I know the Ghostmaker (was that his name?) is on hiatus, but IIRC he said he would continue posting the ratings, no?

There is a world game, Funny Story-2. Since I don't know how to delay a start, will begin in 5 mins. Can you tell me either how to delay it, or feel free to join the game.

Game Starts
Is it possible to delay the start of a game? Because recently I have been forced to remake a game due to a lack of players. The game is Funny Story-2. Also is it possible for a game to start with less than max. players like in the board game.

Is this period set in stone, or does it get truncated if everyone joins the match right away? Are the first orders always due (2 * phase length) from game creation, or could it be sooner?

a noob question
ok as a noob to this great game I have a question, when I move into a new country with a supply center, on the next turn it shows my unit there with a little square that is my colour and the country is still the same colour as the "enemy". why is this? do I need to leave my army to "hold" the country for a turn? or am I miss understanding the rules?
