Webdiplomacy Tournaments?
I am interested in doing some kind of diplomacy tournament but I do not know how to get started. Also, I saw a thread about GR ratings, and I was curious how you get involved to have a GR rating. Any help would be appreciated :]

Tried to look through the forum but unearthing old posts is so cumbersome. What's the status on the current Ghost rating. I know the Ghostmaker (was that his name?) is on hiatus, but IIRC he said he would continue posting the ratings, no?

There is a world game, Funny Story-2. Since I don't know how to delay a start, will begin in 5 mins. Can you tell me either how to delay it, or feel free to join the game.

Game Starts
Is it possible to delay the start of a game? Because recently I have been forced to remake a game due to a lack of players. The game is Funny Story-2. Also is it possible for a game to start with less than max. players like in the board game.

Pre-Game joining period
Is this period set in stone, or does it get truncated if everyone joins the match right away? Are the first orders always due (2 * phase length) from game creation, or could it be sooner?

The Aftermath: Stabbing
Once again, I define a stab as any broken agreement or deception which leads to a change in ownership of one or more centers. In this thread I'd like to hear how you proceed immediately after you successfully stab someone. I'll chime in later in the thread.
Geofram (130 D(B))

One tactic: Right after the stab, talk to the player you just stabbed.

*Pre-Stab: You want at least one person on the board that your target doesn't hate to believe that you have a chance to be stabbed by your target. The more people are talking about you possibly being stabbed, the better.

Right after the stab, chat with the target, express surprise that your moves succeeded (but don't oversell this point), your moves were meant to be a counter-stab for X,Y,Z suspicious reasons PLUS A,B,C countries were chatting about it. (The reasons are more important than the chatter) The target will look to confirm that you had any validation in suspecting with A,B,and/or C and get back to you.

At worst, your previous partner calls you a moron for not trusting him and for believing the other members. At best, he apologises. That's right, you stab him and then he says sorry. But in either case, he wants to right the ship, not burn it down.

The whole point is that he's still talking to you. He's not crying to other members that are looking to prey on his frustration, he's crying to you. Convince him that he could have helped prevent the stab and you'll soften the blow, leaving that avenue of communication open.

This works well in the earlier game and not at all late game (i.e. two way draw stab), but it's in the early game that you can't afford to blacklist yourself to a player after a stab anyway.

The worst thing you can do after a stab is stop talking to the person.
The second worst thing you can do is send: "sorry =/"

i think if you stab someone, it should be a good stab. for example: one center in a world game is a stupid idea. i'd say if you plan on stabbing, make it creative. take about 3 so when they try to fight back, they cant

It really just depends on the circumstances. Sometimes if you take too many centers you turn yourself into a target. I take what I think I can without alienating the rest of the board against me. Immediately after a stab varies too, sometimes you can tell that stabbing someone will result in them hating you for the rest of the game no matter what you say, and pretending it wasn't your intention will only make them madder. I'll still talk to them, but I'll let them make the first response. The majority of the time I agree with Geofram. Try and disguise your reasoning, convince someone you got manipulated, and redirect that persons initial anger somewhere else if at all possible.
I don't think stabs should look simply at SC count. I have made plenty of stabs which involved my opponent losing NO SCs the first year or even two years... but that ultimately resulted in an outright victory or a draw which otherwise would not have been. What you have to consider is not only the tactical element -- am I disabling my opponent adequately by taking x centers, or paralyzing him by taking a powerful position? -- but the strategic element -- is my opponent going to be divided along ultimately-indefensible fronts, which remain so because I am more able to dominate the other front diplomatically than the target is? -- in any stab.

as a completely new player I was thinking, would provoking another player on your marks flank to attack your mark, so that you can route them from the flank thats perceived safe because youre "allied" with them work?

Eden, in some ways you are right - taking a key position can be considered a stab. However, positions can always be retracted whereas a center loss is a tangible loss felt by your opponent. As such it typically invokes a greater emotional response which is why I made change in center ownership a part of my definition of a stab.

I think there are options immediately after you stab someone, but the most important to me is to really step up your press. Most people would agree that you need to contact the person you just stabbed.

I usually try to use logic to explain my thought process with the hopes that my honesty would allow me to mend the relationship later on if need be. What I think is often overlooked is that you really need to have heavy press with all the other nations as well. Many besides the one you directly stabbed will likely be blindsided by the stab, and some may even feel some sort of betrayal by you not telling them. If they say that they knew the stab was coming I often like to stroke their ego a bit, and if they ask why you didn't let them in on the plan I either say that I just wanted to keep it close to the vest (usually the honest answer), or I can seem remorseful and tell them that I should have trusted them and was too paranoid.

Another strategy I rarely use, but it has come up, is to say that I was backed into a corner by another players threats and I had to appease him with a "petty" stab.

All in all, I think that after a stab you need to appeal to the person's LOGIC. If you try to appeal to their EMOTION, you are likely to reduce your options of working with them in the future.

I just stabbed France by building three fleets as England and moving them such that he is wetting his pants in one game. No SCs taken but position is set to put the big hurt on him.
I usually apologize and say it was my only option but we should continue to discuss all other options. Sometimes i justify it with some Casus Belli but usually only if i have no intention of working with the person again

I think geofram makes a key point - you need to continue communicating with your opponent after you have stabbed. I disagree, however, with the idea of saying you moved there because someone else told you your opponent was going to attack you first. While this might work in a beginner or (maybe) intermediate game I just don't see this working much at a high level of play.

I actually think one of the most powerful things you can do is acknowledge the stab, explain your reasoning, and apologize that your opponent has experienced loss at your hands. This paves the way for you to assure them that you bear them no long-term ill will.

Ideally at this point they can be convinced to work FOR you going forward. Why continue to attack the person I stabbed only to gain builds way back in my home centers? Much better to keep them alive on my front lines and essentially gain mercenary troops I can use against the rest o the board. Later on I can scoop up more of their centers at will. When using this tactic i like to make sure the person I stabbed gets at least a survival.

I like what Tom said about appealing to a persona's logic as opposed to making an emotional appeal. The problem is that emotional people (such as players who have just been stabbed) are often not the most logical appeal. This is why I think the apology is a good tool. It helps assuage the emotions of the stab victim.

Grrr...dumb phone changing my words (and dumb Jacob for not proof-reading). Persona's should be person's. Appeal should read people. Sorry...
actually i take it back. Thinking about it, after a stab I usually lie. "Oh I thought you wenst me so i wanted to bounce you to give me time" "X told me you were about to hit me, I'll back off this could be a good diversion for when we move against him next turn" "I just needed the SC for our attack on Y, i understand if you don't trust me but i won't move any further"

You may chuckle but it is wildly effective. After a good stab you have a guy in a pretty hopeless position. Their first instinct is to throw everything they have against you. Even if they don't completely buy it it might compel them to resist sending the house at you next turn allowing your troops to get into position. Also if you have them in a particularly grim situation, they may think "well i don't trust him but this is my only chance" and allow you to twist the knife without resistance. If you are stabbing and foresee no use for your victim just lie lie lie.
should say "thought you were moving against me" in the the sentence

a noob question
ok as a noob to this great game I have a question, when I move into a new country with a supply center, on the next turn it shows my unit there with a little square that is my colour and the country is still the same colour as the "enemy". why is this? do I need to leave my army to "hold" the country for a turn? or am I miss understanding the rules?
