If I didn't know that QI has a reasonably good research team, I'd say they were wrong about this.

Alternative Tip for the Mute Feature
Some of you may have already thought of this, but reading the chat history just got a whole lot easier. Particularly in public press, muting everyone but the person you want to read makes life a lot easier.

Can anything be done against someone?
Who seems to play a lot of games with Friends. I believe they are different people but always seem to work together. Not going to post the people, I just want to know if there can be anything done. If people just work together in every game then that screws over everyone else.

I like french fried taters...
...mmm hmm.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jul 11 UTC
Do you like 'em skinny or fat (or big or small)? Fresh cut or from ground up taters? And, if the later, do you prefer the actual "french fry" or "tater tots".

I like either fresh cut and cooked in quality oil (peanut or saffron) or tater tots (mini ones) baked in the oven. But I also have an addiction to the skinny ones at Steak & Shake and McDonalds.
mmmm I love tater tots. Though I am also partial to 5 Guys's french fries, which I believe are cooked in peanut oil
Draugnar (0 DX)

I like 5 Guys (which are the aforementioned sliced potatoes in some sort of veggie oil) and Penn Station and Great Steak & Potato. Nobody uses peanut oil anymore because of peanut allergies it seems. But saffron is really popular in restaurants,

So who here likes really thin sliced potatoes fried in a pan with (or without) onions or "homefries" either one?

Yeah, I like potatoes fried up any which way...
Onar (131 D)

I like homefries. With peppers and onions mixed in. Question: better with peel on or off?
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jul 11 UTC
Home fries, peel on. Fresh cut fries, peel on. Thin sliced, peel off. And I love the onions, but not a fan of peppers.

When I do thin sliced and fried at home, I really add the spice rack and use a little balsamic vinegar near the end of frying. And I use pure olive oil for home frying. It's healthy and tastes incredible.
Onar (131 D)
05 Jul 11 UTC
Olive oil has a low smoke point, though. Can't be too good for frying unless you mix it with another oil.

Also, has anyone else here ever been to a checkers(rally's in the south, I think) they have the best fast-food fries.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jul 11 UTC
Olive oil is great for pan frying, but not for deep frying. But I prefer pan frying, broiling, or baking to deep frying at home. It's healthier on all counts. you can also grill sliced potatoes and onions along side a steak or burger if you make a tinfoil "bowl" for them. Of course, my new grill has the side burner, so I can fry them up while grilling the steaks and corn.

I love Five Guys fries!

Whenever I have time to make breakfast, I always make some hashbrowns: salt, pepper, onions and grated potatoes on a skillet.

@Draug

I'm with you on deep frying. On top of everything else, deep frying is a pain to clean up.

If you're using olive oil to pan fry, I hope its cheap stuff or you're wasting your money. Veg oil is what most restaurants use, unless they want the product being cooked to take on flavor from the oil...think duck fat, which is awesome to cook fries in.
Onar (131 D)
05 Jul 11 UTC
You can't cook at as high of a heat in olive oil, though, iirc. So wouldn't it soak in more?
trip (696 D(B))
05 Jul 11 UTC
It doesn't soak in, it burns. It also adds the flavor of the oil to whatever you cook, which isn't always a good thing. Plugra is really the best thing for cooking.
If you really want to burn the shit out of something, fry it with grapeseed oil.

It is for threads like these that I read the Forum. My favorite potato dish is homemade skin-on mashed potatoes (Yukon Gold) with plenty of butter, salt, and pepper and just a little bit of milk or cream. If you're home-frying, you're better off with breaded okra punched up with cayenne and Tabasco than with potatoes. A lot less mess and a lot more taste.
Onar (131 D)
05 Jul 11 UTC
my favourite potato dish is au gratin, but that's not what we're talking about. fried potato-wise, I think I'd prefer thinly sliced, lightly salted, and with a bit of vinegar.

They used to be Rally's in Michigan, then they all closed and reopened six months later as virtually identical Checkers. I have no idea wtf that was all about.

I like potatoes in all their forms, but I'm especially addicted to Better Made potato chips, which are a Detroit thing. So good.
Mujus (1495 D(B))

Oh my, my favorite fries are red sweet potatoes (jewel) cut into regular shaped fries by hand, then pan-fried slowly in "pure" olive oil--not the extra-virgin stuff, because the extra flavor that you are paying for in the extra-virgin just cooks off.
Onar (131 D)
05 Jul 11 UTC
On one of my visits to England, I had McCoy's brand potato crisps, in roast chicken flavour. Definitely the oddest potato product I've ever eaten.

I'm really curious about the Rally's/Checker's thing now. I've got one(A checker's) walking distance from me, and it's always been that, as far as I've known it.
SacredDigits (102 D)
05 Jul 11 UTC
I looked up Rallys/Checkers...they merged, and the main Michigan franchisee didn't care for the fact that they wanted all Rallys to become more Checkers-ish, so he closed them, then corporate bought them and Checkers-ized them.

My wife made sweet potato fries a couple nights ago with an awesome dijon mustard/ketchup/mayo sauce. So good.

Is "tater" a word in common use in the US?? I've never heard it said by anyone without a strong south west English accent. I just can't imagine it being said in a Yank voice.

Anyboy broke a lance yet for them golden delicious Belgian fries? Twice deep fried in the cheapest vegetable oil you can find, as thick as a finger, with lots of salt and mayo. No?

Ohh this is becoming culturally so interesting! Where are you from?

As far as us Germans are concerned, and I do intend to speak for an entire nation, the only way to eat fries is to have them Belgian style thick and twice deep fried, then drowned in Shashlik sauce, which is this reddish-brown goo of a ketchup-curry mix, and lots of mayo on top. Ohh god, this is ambrosia.
Octavious (2701 D)
05 Jul 11 UTC
Being something of a British chip connoisseur, I can heartily agree that the twice fried, lightly salted thick chip is unbeatable. But to drown such a masterpiece in mayo or shashlik sauce is a travesty! One must treat them with the proper respect and dunck them lovingly into a steak and ale pie (or steak and stilton, or even venision pie if takes your fancy) filled with a rich, meaty gravy. Heaven!

Unfortunately, none of my travels abroad brought new potato preparations to my palette. I mostly was in East Asia, where while potatoes exist, they were not the centerpiece of local food, which is what I tried to eat mostly.

Although, yes, I did manage to eat some of those excellent Belgian style fries in Hong Kong, where European food was SORT OF local food.

Well, technically, I still have 2 hours and 4 minutes before I'm "independent," so I guess I'm British for the next two hours--well, I wanted tea anyway, alright--so, yeah...but I'm already hearing fireworks, and it's time on the East Coast, so why not...

Age of Greed: The Triumph of Finance and the Decline of America, 1970 to the Present
I haven't yet read the eponymous book, however, there is an excellent review of it in this month's New York Review of Books. A very coherent argument is put that it is indeed greedy bankers (sensu lato) who have chiefly got the world in this financial mess and much else besides. Moreover, those who blame various foreigners and their companies for the mess America is in are barking up the wrong tree.

Question regarding to winning
Do you win instantly when your troops touchdown on that 18th center or do you need to hold it until after the fall turn?

In the one game that I've won so far, I gained the 18th on the fall turn, yet this one guy who lost his last center was not eliminated, but survived with 0 SC, 1 unit.
