Volunteer Advisors...
This came up in a thread a few days back, getting advice via PM. The mods aren't against it, so if the community at large accepts it, I say those willing to volunteer to be an advisor sing up here.

Annoying stupid site system!!!
I have just written a long message about the system used for submitting orders. It now appears I have to write a short message & reply to my question myself as the only way to ask my question is in my reply.
How stupid is that?

This has a practical purpose. Otherwise some OPs would take up entire first page of the forum.

I am now spitting blood because I now have to remember & re-write my query about how this sites system for login orders is poor & is damaging my game performances by not working properly!!!
Game ID=57246.. order lodging query.
I wish to register my frustration at this site failing to record orders that I have made!!!
In games where I have numerous units I look at it in segments & order accordingly.
So, I lodge a number of orders & save them. I then add to them a little while later & save them, then I re-read them all again & press the ready button.
This is not the first time I have complained about the inadequatecy of the system used as it will sometimes not accept the added orders.
In this game I did the same, made some orders, saved them then made some more & saved them.
However, the last lot although accepted as saved did not chage their colour.
So, as I have had problems before, I repeated the process several times but still no change in colour for those recent order updates.
I come out of the site & re enter the site. I check the orders listed, they are the orders I want but still no colour change.
However, because I have re entered the site & they show as the orders I require I press the ready button.
Low & behold the adjudication says I made no orders at all for these units, not even the provisional orders that I had changed from.
I convoyed Algeria out of Africa.
What is wrong with your system? or is it me?

How are you entering your orders? On a PC or a smart phone? I have more problems on my iPhone. I have issues once in a while on my PC, but these I think are probably due to my own error.

Firstly, you can't write a long opening post because to do so would mean the forum showed ONLY these posts!
Would be a nice modification to change the posting system so that when you make a new thread it gives you two input boxes - one for an abstract and another for your main article.

As for orders going wrong, I'm going to maintain its probably you. One thing to consider: do you have a firewall or similar that could be blocking communications from your browser to webDip? I know this happens to me on my parents network since one of the background communications matches a black-listed filter

Thanks for the replys.
I only use the computer. I do not have any other devices as I am not part of the modern techno world.
In fact I am not at all confident about the computer either.
Thats what I have a younger wife & son for.
I am from the days before television & calculators, never mind mobile phones & the like.
I just cannot bring myself to trust electronic things when I am unable to check the answer is correct mentally.
I think the world will fall back into the dark ages when an EM pulse knocks out all electrics in the world.
I do not accept the error was mine as I checked & re-checked several times as explained in my query letter.
Something stops the ammended orders being registered despite the screen saying they are saved & I am ready for the next turn. As for "Firewalls"? Way out of my understanding of the computer operations/functions.
I just type in the words!

Is it possible that some of the orders are looking for a "via convoy/via land" clarification? I wish that would default populate to via land. It always throws me off.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Quoted from directly about the text box when you make a thread:

"If your message is long you may need to write a summary message, and add the full message as a reply."

This was implemented because someone (Sicarius?) would paste entire essays on the OP of a thread, covering the front page with just a few threads. It's actually a very good feature.
But I really like figles' suggestion. That's probably not even hard to implement.
yebellz (729 D(G))

Sacred Digits has a good point: Don't overlook selecting "via land" or "via convoy" when ordering armies that have multiple options. Forgetting to do that is an incomplete order.

(When I see posts like this - justified proposals for improvements in the site - I always have to ask myself: do you think the poster has contributed $5 or $50 to the site, to help make a free site closer to commercial grade?)

(has nothing to do with the validity of the observations, which I agree with - just sayin')
> However, the last lot although accepted as saved did not change their colour.
I've intermittently had this problem during the last 2 or 3 weeks. I reported it to the mods last week, including a screen capture clearly showing the "tick" next to "Save" button but "Save" still in bold rather than greyed and some of the orders fields were still pink. They couldn't reproduce it.

I use XP, Firefox (3.6.16) and the NoScript addon (I only block google-analytics), Norton Internet Security. They all get automatic updates.

I don't think I've had any incorrect orders executed, but when it's happened I navigated away and back and re-entered all of my orders from scratch (putting them back to "Hold" and saving them, then putting in the correct orders).

I did not fail to order the convoy or to where it was to go & you cannot press the ready button if you have foggoten to say say via land or via convoy. It will not register if the order is incomplete. Well on my system it won't anyway.
Re:- abgemacht723 comment on new thread box instructions.
You are correct sir, I just did not read them as I was so intent to report my earlier frustrations.
I apologise to you, good sir. Sorry.
I use a Windows 7 laptop bought for me by my wife, who knows & understands computers & thinks I should aquaint myself with modern technology before I get left behind.
Although she is far to busy to show me how to use all that it can do!

"screen capture clearly showing the "tick" next to "Save" button but "Save" still in bold rather than greyed and some of the orders fields were still pink. They couldn't reproduce it."

If you take a complete set of orders and save them. Change one of the orders and then change it back, then save again, you get exactly what you described.
So it does. Well spotted Frickin'Zeus. That explains what I saw.

I'm not going to risk it (I cleared the orders in the game where I tried this and re-entered them as described above) but does the order go through as shown? If it does then that isn't what TLD is reporting.

I have a thought (as a computer geek who does web app development)...

If the site had one of it's Error 500 burps, this could affect the AJAX call to save the orders. Combine that with a potential caching issue that remembers the page instead of reloading it every time, and you could get exactly what TLD experienced as well. The cached page displayed and the save never actually went through because the web service/page returned an Error 500.
Draugnar (0 DX)

To fix the problem @TLD, have your wife set your cache settings in the web browser to reload the page every time it is hit. Then if you click "Board" at the top when you have had an apparent problem with the Save, it will reload it from the server, not the cache.

"If you take a complete set of orders and save them. Change one of the orders and then change it back, then save again, you get exactly what you described. "
Right, so actually you did have the correct orders saved?

@Draug - that would make sense wouldn't it

> However, the last lot although accepted as saved did not chage their colour.
How do you know there were accepted as saved? If they didn't change their color they're not accepted as saved.

The process works like so:
- When you reload a page the currently entered orders are loaded, and they are always in green to reflect that they are the current orders stored in the database.
- The orders entered are converted to JSON, a format for neatly transporting structured data to/from JavaScript across HTTP
- The server takes this data, processes it, and returns more JSON data containing the results of the processing. If there is an internal server (500) error, a 404 error, a time-out, anything, no JSON data will be returned, and you will see an error message. (And if you receive an HTTP error code no browser will show a cached page instead, and changes made with javascript aren't cached anyway, and ..., and ...)
- If JSON data is returned it will contain, for each order submitted, the status of that order. Each order is looked up in the returned order status data, and if the order has data indicating a successful process it will turn green and get a tick. If there is an order specific error this error will be posted.

What this means is:
- If the order does not turn green after clicking submit there is no reason to assume it has been submitted! (This is the whole point of having orders change color).
- If you reload the page the orders will always be in green. If you reload the page and the orders are not in green you can't have reloaded the page; only selecting an alternate choice from a drop-down can change an order component to red.

Many thanks for all your efforts, gentlemen.
All the technical stuff went over my head, but the simple "If it don't turn Green then nothing has been changed" has sunk in.
Thanks once again to all of you.

Why I'm leaving
I have been working my way through the online Dip sites to find the one that is best for me, and have just finished my second game here. I now realize this is not the site for me. For anyone interested, there are good and bad points, but the swinger for me is the Forum terrifies me.
