Who's up for a live game on Olidip.net (now vdiplomacy.com)?
I have nothing to do all day and feel like killing a few hours by playing a live game.
I would like to try one of the obscure maps on vdip, say sengoku. Whos in?

It forces one to play NON_anononymous, so as to avoid ridiculous players sometimes... No offense, but I feel it offensive to bump into those !

I am not sure what you are talking about. Could you elaborate a little? What does the points system have to do with avoiding ridiculous players?

Dhar the words coming out of your mouth are gibberish. (We can't make heads or tails of your post) Please do not post while drunk or high.

Thank you very much.

So you think the points system encourages people to play for a draw rather than a riskier strategy which could result in a win but is more likely to result in a defeat. Is that right?
Could you suggest a system where this would not be the case? Maybe only wins count?

Total waste of a thread. And you comment on 'dumb' players, Dhar???
spyman (424 D(G))

Also you have not really touched on the issue of being forced to join non-anon games. What's that all about?
Dharmaton (2398 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
@damina, quit pot, never drank really -> Yuck. ... Never heard of peotic thinking ?

Ah, whatever, played a bunch of live games, & the players were (&*&%?%?%$/"()"&_
damian (675 D)

Dhar. Poetic thinking yes I have have heard of it. However to do so you ideas do have to be clearly presented, or at the very least speak for themselves. Which yours do not. You hardly address the points you've made.

While I agree with some of them I'm wondering what you are trying to convey as you seemed to switch ideas in your second post.

The first one is unrelated to the point system far as I can tell. Just that to avoid crappy players you have to play non-anon games so you can see them coming and bail.
spyman (424 D(G))

I have heard the standard of play in live games can be inconsistent.
I suppose time constraints might be an issue - not enough time to properly consider options, plus I think metagamers are attracted to live games (friends playing together knowing before the game that they will ally).
spyman (424 D(G))

... nothing to do with the points system , though.

You could try password protecting games and then recruiting players from the forum. I find that tends to ensure a higher standard of play.

'survive' gives 'points' ... it seems that you 'survive' by having unit(s) on boars when game 'finished' ... not necccesssarily any CDs Left !
Rommeltastic (1126 D(B))

That is true, it's happened to me once where I got a survive with no supply centres left. It's not exactly how I'd imagine the game working, but I don't see it as a huge flaw...
Dharmaton (2398 D)
24 Dec 10 UTC
LOL, indeed, there ARE a number of 'quirks' to be addressed ;-)

What about sportsman like behaviour, like, when you are gonna do a sweeping win, why not leave 1 unit of those you 'liked' ;-), won't change anything 'bout yer RANK, but a few measly D's.

I've been doing this. It solves 90% of problems with CD's and foul behavior.

No it doesn't. They're actually separate. Points in PPSC are proportional to number of SCs you have.
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Dec 10 UTC
However, you can get a zero SC survive if the winner took your last SC on the turn they won.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
25 Dec 10 UTC
Correct. It won't get you any points though.
Also note currently you don't get a retreat if someone has 18SCs, which can (rarely) cause the adjudicator to be wrong

Metagaming?
Is it metagaming to ask for advice on a game that is currently running? What about general advice concerning the country you are playing, without reference to the game?

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: George Carlin--"I'm an Entropist...I Like Anarachy!"
For the last one of these chat sessions of the year (that I REALLY enjoy and value, by the way, so thank you all so much, those of you who continue to share your ideas...I respect you so much for taking the time and effort to CARE and to SHARE your opinion) I thought, in the wake of that last "cyber-attack" by self-proclaimed anarchists (at least I think they were) we could discuss anarchy. What "defines" it? To what degree? Good? Bad? What about authoritarianism, the flip side?

Epic gunboat.
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=45127
this is by far the best gunboat game i've ever played. Guessing France's orders and helping him all the way till 17 SC's. When there was no sign he would draw, I switched sides and forced a stalemate. It was epic.

Getting to know the PBEM Diplomacy Community
In recent days, we have had some vibrant discussions on various threads about our community compared to the PBEM community. In that light, I wanted to share a few emails I received that might be useful for some others, both in shedding light on other communities of Dip players and to provide us with ideas to even further improve our own.

diplomacy on risk-board
hey people, i would like to play diplomacy with my friends, in real, not online... and we never want to play diplomacy with 7 people at the same time. so i think it is not worth to buy the game, but i have risk and i thougt it would be possible to make a variant on the risk-board (without chancing the board, i could try it with aresible things)
