What's with all the commies? :)
orathaic (1009 D(B))

where? communist tend to mean Soviet Russia and Communist China, which are notably Authoritarian - Graeme and Fasces are the only remotely authoritarian.

Putin - though claiming to be a communist seems to believe i personal freedoms (while advocating strong government control of bussiness and social welfare)

Not entirely communist...

The quiz has a libertarian bias. If you don't believe in eugenics and think women should have equal rights you're given libertarian points. Communists are not socially "authoritarian" . Read Origins of the Family by Engels or anything written by Lenin or Mao on women or nationality issues.

On a lighter note.

I refuse to accept a world divided by some arbitarily drawn lines on a map. I will not go to war with someone because he holds a different passport. I will kill any bastard who threatens my family. I am afraid that I have now come to the conclusion that power corrupts and am disgusted by the Westminster expenses scandle.

Is anarchism my only alternative?

i guess that freedom in a social/family context (with religion having been suppressed) was easier under the Soviet Union, however working life was not anything close to the 'freedom' available in the west

"however working life was not anything close to the 'freedom' available in the west"

Freedom in working life means what? Being unemployed? Working for minimum wage?

"where integrated trade becomes too important to risk war over..."

That's why we're trying to become self-sufficient in oil and energy.

The definition of communist/marxist/socialist is another debate entirely. E.g. I consider myself a marxist, yet people are surprised at my anti-authotarianism.
Graeme01 (100 D)
25 Dec 10 UTC
I agree, largeham. Marxism does not intrinsically involve a non-democratic central government. It is often carried out that way, but it can co-exist with democracy. They are not mutually exclusive. While I believe that the government should have relatively extensive power, it should absolutely be responsible to the people.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Dec 10 UTC
What do you mean by 'democracy'? Do you mean the working class controlling the government? Or do you mean parties competing in elections?

Marx was not a liberal. He was a revolutionist. He called for Dictatorship of the Proletariat. Some have tried to make Marx more palatable to the middle class/petty bourgeoisie by making it seem like he was something he was not. There was a reason he was in exile in England his whole life.

Metagaming?
Is it metagaming to ask for advice on a game that is currently running? What about general advice concerning the country you are playing, without reference to the game?

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: George Carlin--"I'm an Entropist...I Like Anarachy!"
For the last one of these chat sessions of the year (that I REALLY enjoy and value, by the way, so thank you all so much, those of you who continue to share your ideas...I respect you so much for taking the time and effort to CARE and to SHARE your opinion) I thought, in the wake of that last "cyber-attack" by self-proclaimed anarchists (at least I think they were) we could discuss anarchy. What "defines" it? To what degree? Good? Bad? What about authoritarianism, the flip side?

Epic gunboat.
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=45127
this is by far the best gunboat game i've ever played. Guessing France's orders and helping him all the way till 17 SC's. When there was no sign he would draw, I switched sides and forced a stalemate. It was epic.

Getting to know the PBEM Diplomacy Community
In recent days, we have had some vibrant discussions on various threads about our community compared to the PBEM community. In that light, I wanted to share a few emails I received that might be useful for some others, both in shedding light on other communities of Dip players and to provide us with ideas to even further improve our own.

diplomacy on risk-board
hey people, i would like to play diplomacy with my friends, in real, not online... and we never want to play diplomacy with 7 people at the same time. so i think it is not worth to buy the game, but i have risk and i thougt it would be possible to make a variant on the risk-board (without chancing the board, i could try it with aresible things)
