Metagaming?
Is it metagaming to ask for advice on a game that is currently running? What about general advice concerning the country you are playing, without reference to the game?

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: George Carlin--"I'm an Entropist...I Like Anarachy!"
For the last one of these chat sessions of the year (that I REALLY enjoy and value, by the way, so thank you all so much, those of you who continue to share your ideas...I respect you so much for taking the time and effort to CARE and to SHARE your opinion) I thought, in the wake of that last "cyber-attack" by self-proclaimed anarchists (at least I think they were) we could discuss anarchy. What "defines" it? To what degree? Good? Bad? What about authoritarianism, the flip side?

Epic gunboat.
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=45127
this is by far the best gunboat game i've ever played. Guessing France's orders and helping him all the way till 17 SC's. When there was no sign he would draw, I switched sides and forced a stalemate. It was epic.

Getting to know the PBEM Diplomacy Community
In recent days, we have had some vibrant discussions on various threads about our community compared to the PBEM community. In that light, I wanted to share a few emails I received that might be useful for some others, both in shedding light on other communities of Dip players and to provide us with ideas to even further improve our own.

diplomacy on risk-board
hey people, i would like to play diplomacy with my friends, in real, not online... and we never want to play diplomacy with 7 people at the same time. so i think it is not worth to buy the game, but i have risk and i thougt it would be possible to make a variant on the risk-board (without chancing the board, i could try it with aresible things)

Horrors of Calculus
This doesn't have anything to do with WebDiplomacy... however, I bring it up anyways.

I'm barely getting by in my first Calculus class on a B-. It doesn't seem bad now... but as the lessons get harder and harder, that B- will only hold my grade for so long. I put in 5 hours of studying today, more than ever before and I still feel completely as if I'm drowning in the madness of Calc.

AHHH CALCULUS!! Who else is taking this or has taken this, and how did you survive?

Just wait for Calc II...

As far as calc goes, I didn't have too much trouble but I pick up on math pretty well. English (language arts) on the other hand....yikes

I'm completely the opposite. GAH! I've had issues since Algebra. Way back in elementary school, I was one of the quickest in the class when it came to adding and subtracting. Once algebra hit in middle school it was all over. lol

I LOVE Calculus!

Try out this site. His notes saved my ass in DiffEq, maybe it will help you out:

Yeah man it only gets harder in Calc II. The best advice I can give is make sure you understand a topic before you move on. It all builds on itself ya know?

@abge, If you could have mentioned that site about 3 months ago, it would have made Diff Eq SO much easier for me this semester haha

heh Yeah, it's a beautiful site.
I love calculus! I got a 5 on the BC exam in high school. Towards the end of the course, with the sequences and such, i was lost, but the main part of it - integrals and derivatives - come pretty easy. Its not so much knowing math as knowing concepts and rules. the algebra is where I made all my mistakes

Sequences and series are fun!
What part of the calculus gives you the most trouble?

Calculus is beautiful, it should be having a problem with you :P

I have an engineering degree and math minor. Calc (1-4) never gave me trouble. Probs & Stats 2 was the one that gave me fits. Usually differential equations come after calc, and I found it easier than calc. I took linear algebra 1 & 2 to get my math minor. Not for the weak minded (but really nice to know if you want to get into computer graphics.... which I did not... heh).

Where does calc come into graphics? This related to ray-tracing etc?
fortknox (2059 D)

linear algebra comes into computer graphics. Matrix math, basically. Learning 3 D space through matrices is the basics of 3 D computer graphics.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 Dec 10 UTC
Yes clearly linear algebra does. I'd misread you as saying calculus was useful for CG, which was rather harder to understand
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I really enjoyed linear algebra as well. Abstract Algebra was a blast. Complex variables was ok, but I preferred the EE approach to it better.
