Does anyone know how to get new AIs for DAIDE? I've only played against Albert and I'd like to get new ones but each time I get one it tells me its the wrong version. If anyone can help enable a fellow Diplo addict I'd appreciate it!

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Free As a (Causally-Determined) Bird
Right, so "causality" is apparently a four-letter word with my Philosophy of Religion professor, as for him there is absolutely no hearing an argument agaisnt free will, the whole, weeks-long discussion was led by him and emhpasized not IF we can have free will but rather HOW we DO have free will, ie, is it God, science, a balance, and on...so I present it to you, the WebDip Philosophical Community--CAN we have free will, if so to what degree, and if not, why, and is there any point to life?

Anonymous messages in-game
An idea went to my mind: what would you think of the option to write anonymous messages in your games? Parallel and independent to your regular comments of course.
Discuss here if it pleases you.
Bonotow (782 D)

If this was discussed before I am sorry, but I really couldn't search this huge huge forum for it.

An idea went to my mind: what would you think of the option to write anonymous messages in your games? Parallel and independent to your regular comments of course.
To make clear what I mean: you write a message as regular, maybe to one specific country or maybe in the public chat, but your message won't be in your countries colour, and there wouldn't be written down "your country" in front of the text when the others read it. It would be black text like when mods post messages.

I think this might introduce more options of conversation. It would turn some discussion more fact-based and not sympathy-based. I think it would lead to more draws and turn solos harder as maybe some people would happyly react to the "fact" that someone is about to win rather than the "feeling" of one specific non-soloing country that someone else might be about to win...

Or just imagine the following: you look at the map and see the threat of an alliance and want to talk about it. But if the others know who you are (or more so which country you are) they will not think about the alliance you mentioned, but only about "what the hell is he planning and why is he telling me those weird things?". R talking about an E-F alliance won't have any impact on G usually. With anonymous messages G would receive the same information, but without knowledge of who wrote the note. Of course skilled players will still know who the author was (or at least have a good guess on it). G would have to think more about the real situation on the board.

Would you think this worth for something? Feel free to say "no, this is bullshit" of you feel the needs to ;-)

As this diverges from the spirit of the original game, I would be hesitant to add it for normal games.

It could be a fun variant, though.
Draugnar (0 DX)

True it diverges from the original game, but is actually true to the various press options in the PB(e)M/Judge world. There is white press (what we have here), grey press (anonymous) and even black press (faked messages appearing as if from another player). I'd love to see the grey and black both as options here.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I think it would be nice to add as an option (perhaps by adding another panel?)
ie Global; England ..... Turkey; Rumour

Can someone who's used this tell me what effects it has?

I feel like if there was a Rumor tab, I would never even open it.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

Bounced has a grey press option. In games with white press, grey press generally gets ignored, although it can be fun to do a running commentary or something. To make things really interesting, make it gray broadcast only. Those games are just a headache.
amonkeyperson (100 D)

I really think that this would deviate from the whole point of the game. The whole point is to negotiate with the other countries as your assigned country to get to 18 supply centers. If someone was sending an anonymous message to everyone, I would feel as if they were cheating.

If youre a huge country and youre on the way to a solo victory, people might not listen to you as much as they would if you had the same amount of supply centers as them. The country can utilize the rumor tab to make things easier for him. This, to me, is viewed as cheating because that country should take on that last hurdle of being the big stack bully, instead of having another option.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

@amonkeyperson
In general, people aren't stupid, and I have never, in probably 50ish games with the gray press option, seen the strategy you are implying work.
Katsarephat (100 D)
10 Nov 10 UTC
@amonkeyperson: But the thing is, anyone else can also impersonate the big country if they wanted!

Now, I agree that it's not in the spirit of the game really, but again, if you consider it a variant it could really be a lot of fun.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

gunboat isn't in the spirit of the game either!
podium (498 D)

Played this sort of grey/black press before. All players do is create code words for other countries if they don't have the correct code word when you recieve/or send press then you know that the press is from the wrong player and meant to throw you off your game.
Actually quite fun as everyone is always sending press to mess with you or trying to guess code word since everyone knows that is the best way to be sure that you are
talking to the correct player.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

Code words don't work quite as well in grey broadcast though.

Rhyming game
This variant of the game seems like it can be a lot of fun. I had the pleasure of seeing one unfold about a year ago. Since I havent been on this site in so long, I have no idea if this has become a common trait among different games on this site now.
The rules are exactly the same as a normal dip game, but with one exception.
if you want to say something, you have to make it rhyme.
