I'm Germany. I open anti-England, giving Sweden to Russia uncontested. I stupidly captured Belgium with my army that autumn, instead of my fleet. I had also thwarted France somewhat by capturing Bel, but the compensation of the extra unit ameliorated my conscience. France was philosophical about it, but in hindsight, may have harboured a grudge. By autumn 1902, England was, effectively, bye-bye. I had fleets in Den, Heli, and Bel. France had fleets in Mid and NAt. England had 2 of its 4 units in Bar and Fin, stranding his fleets in Lon and Wal. From my perspective, it seemed as if France and Italy had a non-agg going on, and Russia and I were friendly(or so I thought), so England was in a truly unsustainable position. Autumn 1903 was a bad term for me. I stabbed France, who was nothing but a fine upstanding ally all of this time.

I don't know what came over me, I've never done anything like that before.

I also GOT stabbed by treacherous Russia. Anyway, now I'm screwed. I'm Germany and I have NO FRIENDS. I did what I had to do. I crawled back to France on my belly, and begged forgiveness. France relented, provided that I got the hell out of his country. I knew that it was only a matter of time before France took justifiable revenge. As a temporary expedient, it was a fortunate alliance for me. I was able to throw everything that I had against Russia and wall up. In spring 1905, I blew up Russia's unit in Prussia because that's the coolest thing in this game to do. Blowing shit up. Austria had exploded into me from the bottom(oooh sailor), and was also shifting glacially toward Russia. This was when Austria, France, and Russia severely kicked my ass. I was left only with Ber and Den. Austria had already eaten Italy and Turkey, and was threatening a solo with 16 units in autumn 1908.

Now, all of this time I am being very bitter and snotty with France and Russia. I am threatening to throw the game to Austria before I allow them to eliminate me. I was being very LeBron James, will-he-or-won't-he? about the whole triple alliance thing with my treacherous old droogs, oh my brothers. Of course, in the interest of self-preservation, which Russia unfailingly pointed out to me, I agreed to join forces against the evil Austrian Empire, and force the 4-way draw.

I survived with an army in Berlin, and a fleet in the Baltic Sea. This might be my all-time favourite game.

Unfortunately I am not blessed with mapleleaf's memory, so my comments will be more cursory. At the helm of vulnerable Austria, my goal was to make it to mid-game without having pissed off too many people. I therefore manoeuvered to end up in two alliances with a view to three-way draws, one with Germany and Italy, the other with Russia and France. Russia got pretty beat up by England initially and had to lean on my support to withstand Turkish assaults- that made him very friendly early on, and I hoped to be able to stick with him for the rest of the game. I also had similar hopes with Italy, although I suspected that we might have to clash at some point down the line.

Once Turkey was dealt with, it was time to choose who to cooperate with, and the expediency of the moment led me to side with Russia and France. As they grew, however, and particularly as France grew, I became concerned that once Italy and Germany would be dealt with I would find myself squeezed between two gigantic powers in a position to take me out with relatively little risk. I used this fact to justify various encroachments on my Russian ally- still in earnest by this point. This in turn, however, only made me more paranoid after the risk of a Franco-Russian alliance against me, and I eventually calculated that the cost-risk ratio was better going for the solo (with a strong possibility of a four-way draw) than sticking for the three-way draw. You know how it ended. :) For the record, I do think that Russia would have remained committed to the three-way. Not so sure about France, but it might only be because the communication was less satisfying.

I absolutely enjoyed this game- thanks to everybody involved.

My game plan was decided right after the first turn: Both England and Turkey had turned all their forces toward poor me Russia. I suddenly found myself fighting two nations from opposite sides! At that point, I solicited two alliances: France and Germany against England, and Austria and Italy against Turkey. It worked like a charm: Both England and Turkey went down faster than the Titanic.

With my two initial threats gone, I planned my next phase. I proposed to Austria and France about the Triple Alliance, with which I had planned to end the game. I have always thought that a well-played WTA should always end in 3-way draw because solo is too hard (in a well-played game by rational players), 2-way is too unstable (too many points at stake), and anything else is just splitting the pot too much (more about the 4-way draw later). I chose this Triple because France can help me tear through Germany easily and Italy would keep Austria busy and away from me.

However, my phase-two went wrong in two crucial, unexpected ways. Italy threw the game to Austria while Germany put up a resilient fight. Austria suddenly grew at a rate faster than both France and I could keep up. I tried numerous times talking to Austria to uphold the Alliance, but when it became obvious that he was going for solo I had to approach Germany.

Now, Germany was a dick. He was totally on tilt. No amount of reasoning could reach him for many turns. All he could hold in that thick skull of his was anger. Alliances shift all the times based on changing circumstances. Sun Tzu has said, "A king cannot wage war because of anger; a general cannot engaged out of wrath. Move forward when it is beneficial; cease when it is not." But to Germany's credit, he did calm down and turned around to hold the stalemate to end the game.

Or so you would think...

At the last two turns, I was waiting for Austria to approach me to stab Germany one more time. I had hoped that Austria would propose his retreat away from my border so that I can finish off Germany for a 3-way draw. 4-way draw and 3-way meant a difference of 175 D! But Austria never did so. I suppose I could have approach Austria myself, but at this point I did not want to drag the game for another 2 years (Austria must retreat in the first year; then I wipe out Germany the next.).

Sorry, Germany. But this is Diplomacy. :)

@g01df1ng3r - You were PLAYED. I don't get angry. It's an online GAME.

I am extremely surprised that I did not get stabbed in the endgame, and I expressed this many times to all of you.

You didn't want to wait two measly years, especially to wipe out dick-ish old me? Sounds like bullshit to me, pal. You didn't have the chops to get the deal done, is more like it.

Thanks for the Diplomacy lesson.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Free As a (Causally-Determined) Bird
Right, so "causality" is apparently a four-letter word with my Philosophy of Religion professor, as for him there is absolutely no hearing an argument agaisnt free will, the whole, weeks-long discussion was led by him and emhpasized not IF we can have free will but rather HOW we DO have free will, ie, is it God, science, a balance, and on...so I present it to you, the WebDip Philosophical Community--CAN we have free will, if so to what degree, and if not, why, and is there any point to life?

Rhyming game
This variant of the game seems like it can be a lot of fun. I had the pleasure of seeing one unfold about a year ago. Since I havent been on this site in so long, I have no idea if this has become a common trait among different games on this site now.
The rules are exactly the same as a normal dip game, but with one exception.
if you want to say something, you have to make it rhyme.
