DAIDE AI
Does anyone know how to get new AIs for DAIDE? I've only played against Albert and I'd like to get new ones but each time I get one it tells me its the wrong version. If anyone can help enable a fellow Diplo addict I'd appreciate it!

great example of sportsmanship
i know we often complain about cheating and metagaming etc etc etc (or at least we used to)

tonight i played a live press game where the opposite occurred. http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=41583

england and I had a game long alliance that resulted in us building a stalemate line against a more powerful turkey. it appeared that we were headed for a three way draw. however, turkey eventually had to leave without notice. (it was barn3tt, who also played a good game) VanHaylen easily could have overpowered me for an easy solo win in a pretty high pot game. but he had the grace and good sportsmanship to split with me for the two way draw.

I feel like this kind of positive upholding of the spirit of Diplomacy goes unnoticed too often so i just thought id post.

it's either good or bad sportsmanship depending on how anyone sees the correct way to play diplomacy.
It would have probably been better sportsmanship if he had allowed Turkey to get in on the draw. You guys were basically at the stalemate when he cut out. Presumably VH could have handled to split the points 3 ways.

I call it good sportsmanship. I think you should play for the win, but opting for the draw when a close(ish) second goes CD is certainly classy.
Barn3tt (41969 D)

eh, it's alright- Van Haylen, we're going to have to go double or nothing. :)
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Under normal circumstances, you should go for the win. When a player CDs (especially a very powerful one) that can seriously break the game. Sure, you can go for the win, but you didn't really earn it. IMHO, in those circumstances, you might as well draw and move on with your lives.
Rancher (1652 D(S))

I'm all for wins, but I have to agree with abgemacht on that one

Three cds at the start the game should have been cancelled or drawn once Russia came back.
Man I hate cds in live games I know shit can happen but three in one game is too much.
Frank (100 D)
11 Nov 10 UTC
yeah barn3tt and i tried to cancel but i think germany and maybe russia were inexperienced players and wanted to run with it. sort of throws a wrench in it and makes it kind of interesting. of course, it also makes the game inherently unbalanced and unfair.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
11 Nov 10 UTC
Damn, didn't even notice all the CD's in the beginning. Honestly, that game should have been drawn/cancelled at the beginning. Why waste your time on a game like that. I've never left a game, but if I was in that and people refused to end it, I would have just walked away.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
11 Nov 10 UTC
Yeh, whilst your play is far from rare, the fact you played to the draw rather than cancelling isn't something I'd go shouting about.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

WIN AT ALL COSTS

would have gone for the stab myself, and no not because i'm a selfish asshole, but because i think its the right thing to do.

guess i'm in the minority there. idk. in reality though if stabbing would seriously jeopardize the stalemate line i might just wait until the other guy came back for fear of him coming back in the middle of my stab allowing him to win which is unacceptable.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Free As a (Causally-Determined) Bird
Right, so "causality" is apparently a four-letter word with my Philosophy of Religion professor, as for him there is absolutely no hearing an argument agaisnt free will, the whole, weeks-long discussion was led by him and emhpasized not IF we can have free will but rather HOW we DO have free will, ie, is it God, science, a balance, and on...so I present it to you, the WebDip Philosophical Community--CAN we have free will, if so to what degree, and if not, why, and is there any point to life?

An idea went to my mind: what would you think of the option to write anonymous messages in your games? Parallel and independent to your regular comments of course.

Rhyming game
This variant of the game seems like it can be a lot of fun. I had the pleasure of seeing one unfold about a year ago. Since I havent been on this site in so long, I have no idea if this has become a common trait among different games on this site now.
The rules are exactly the same as a normal dip game, but with one exception.
if you want to say something, you have to make it rhyme.

Decrimanalizing Marijuana
In Canada there is some discussion about decriminalizing Marijuana. It will still be against the law to use or distribute, but it will be punished by a ticket (like a traffic ticket) instead of a criminal record.
