What ARE Ghost Ratings, anyway?
Hey--noobie question. I couldn't find any info on the help page about it. What are Ghost Ratings? How do I get a Ghost Rating? How do I know what my Ghost Rating is? How do I know what anyone else's Ghost Rating is? Many thanks.

Interesting game concept
I was of starting a world war one style game with pre-set alliances and was wondering if anyone was interested. Im thinking it would have to be live though, because I have a convention later this month and dont want to have to pause. Im up for discussion about the allliances though, I just said world war 1 because that would easiest to come up with alliances, but as long as there are two "about equal" teams. im happy. Anyone interested?

Just throwing this out there for those who might be interested, but I've started posting commentaries for completed games on Youtube. The channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/Triumvir412. Nice work.

Great job!

I do have some suggestions:

Consider using the webdip map? It has the advantage of labeled territories, which is really helpful for new players. Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I thought it was impossible to tell the difference between armies/fleets on the program you were using.

Try to make it shorter, if you can. I know this is hard because there is so much to say, but it's really hard to keep people's attention for 1/2 hour on Youtube. I'd suggest trying to cut it to 15mintus and see how it turns out.

Again, nice work. Look forward to the next one.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

i think the webdip map has some disadvantages compared to the jdip one (though those units you used are crap, you can change them, and the old default was better if you ask me... stupid tanks look a lot like boats... the A and F is my preference)

My main problem with webdip is that you can't look at past positions, only past moves....

jdip doesn't suffer from this, and the map fills a higher percentage of the screen...

anyway, good luck, a nice example of play.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

If you go into full-screen mode in your browser and zoom in, the map fills the screen almost perfectly.

You do have a good point about the drawings on the webdip map. For people not used to it, it can be confusing.
Triumvir (1193 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
Hey. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. You can turn on territory names in the jDip maps so perhaps I'll do that for the next one I record. I've already got my next one done and got it down to two parts, so it'll be shorter than the last one. Also, I'll play around with the different army/fleet icons in jDip to see if there's a set that is more distinct.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
30 Oct 10 UTC
i just have a thing about those fleet/tank icons - mainly because when i first started using jdip they were not the default and while using it they changed and it's hard (especially in a small youtube video) to tell the difference...

I've become some kind of bitter old man... But i have also found the game i was running; I think the only successful example of a wintergreen alliance which i've seen (with a russian stab at the end for the win: http://fl.5u.com/ )
orathaic (1009 D(B))
30 Oct 10 UTC
this is not an alternative... but see here: http://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/GALLERY/2482_16_02_09_8_37_29.png

I like the way they are cannon instead of tanks, and have the country's letter on each unit... and how fleet are easily distuingishable from armies. Just a pity the territory colours are all wrong.
groza528 (518 D)

With a small amount of work you can change the colors assigned to each power in that program (realpolitik for those unfamiliar). The non-SCs will always remain beige, but powers can be chosen from several colors, and can even be assigned the *same* color (but not the same letter I think)
Triumvir (1193 D)

@groza528 - The program is actually jDip, not realpolitik. I've used realpolitik and didn't really like it.

I've posted my 2nd game commentary for those interested. Number 3 is in the works and I'm working on integrating some of your suggestions. Thanks and keep them coming.

They seem like a useful beginner's guide, but it's very verbose. That may be good for beginners since you spell out everything that's happening on the board. However, the videos aren't very interesting for experienced players since most of the commentary is just obvious statements about the moves and facts of the game. I didn't really watch very far into the videos since they are quite long and I was getting bored, so perhaps the commentary becomes more insightful further on.

If you are going for the beginner audience (which I think is great as it can introduce new players into the game), I think the suggestions that other people had about map labels and unit icons would help improve the ability for the watcher to follow along. The basic "A" and "F" unit icons available in jDip are much more clear.

However, if you want to cater toward a more experience audience, map labels wouldn't be necessary, but the more clear "A" and "F" icons would still be appreciated. More importantly, with an experienced audience, I think the commentary would need to be improved in order to focus less on the obvious facts about the moves and more on insight and motivation behind the moves. The delivery also could be a lot more crisp and concise. Perhaps you should also get statements from other players and script out what points you need to cover. Video editing could also help improve the length and fix some verbal mistakes.

I don't mean to be too harsh in my critique. Hopefully you view these comments as constructive. You are clearly willing to put a lot of effort into this and I'm sure you want to deliver the best product you can. My advice can be outlined by the following: know your audience, prepare your statements, reflect on and condense your statements, practice and edit to make the final product perfect. If you put some more work into it, I'm sure you can produce some great videos.

@yebellz - No apology needed. If I had wanted people to stroke my ego, that's what I would have asked for (and I certainly wouldn't have asked here!). Your comments speak to some questions/concerns I had already. Up to this point I have just been "winging it" and thought that I should probably start writing down what should be talked about. Your point about a more "behind the scenes" commentary is good and is perhaps something I'll try in my next one.

I had found the "A" and "F" icons and will probably be using them for commentaries in the future.

Yes, I was referring to orathaic's pic. I've used both jdip and realpolitik; At first I preferred jdip for the graphics (especially the arc for support) but now I prefer realpolitik for its customization capability.
Agree that the commentary is a kind of bland at the moment; I'd personally like to see, in addition to some behind-the-scenes stuff, some recognition for strong tactics or clever coups.
Triumvir (1193 D)

@groza528 - Oh. My mistake. I think, given some of the comments, that I may redo the Bend Up Every Spirit commentary to cover more of the "behind the scenes" stuff. The problem then becomes - there is SO MUCH behind the scenes stuff in every Diplomacy game, that could actually make the commentaries longer...I'll have to see what I can come up with.

i just subscribe. very interesting. i have one suggestion; how about IF you can get the permission from the other players to pass to you the transcripts of all their negotiations with other countries. i bet if you explained that it is for a video game commentary i know they will be very willing to help. it is only a copy and paste thing.//

what makes diplomacy great is the negotiation aspect of the game. if you can get the permission from the other players of how they went about their negotiatiosn it will help you make a better game commentary of the game.

I thought the commentary was interesting enough. Just too long (I know it's hard to shorten it because there's so much going on).

If you're looking to liven up the commentary, maybe you should have someone else do it with you? Adding another person to the mix will add variety.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Oh, I understand what people are saying.

Yes, as beginner guides, I think this is very good. But, for us, I agree they weren't too interesting. The moves speak for themselves to experienced players. It really depends on the audience you're aiming for.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Adding another person also allows you to do something like a sports commentary. You got the stats guy, the color guy, etc. Things like

"Woah! Didn't see that convoy coming."
"Your right, dude. niether did England, obviously."

It could really enhance and make it almost dramatic.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Nov 10 UTC
That's what I was thinking.

If done right, I think it could be very enjoyable for both new and experienced players.

You could also have guests like ivo, MM, etc on the show.
