This has been an exceptionally awesome world cup. the Ghana/Germany/Serbia/Australia game could have gone any which way literally up until the end... same with Group C... even New Zeland held Italy to a draw - how awesome was THAT game???

I don't, not too much, anyway... all these corner kicks and you can had-pass the ball OUT of bounds but not in (how weird is it you get to do something OUTSIDE the field of regulation you couldn't do ON like that, usually it's the other way around, ie, a caught pass out of bounds in American Football doesn't count... I still don't get why 4/5 of these penalties are called, except for those tripping ones so obvious even I could spot it and yell at the TV... and a bunch of other stuff) but ANY hockey fan like myself knows what "GGGGOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!!" means! ;)

I STILL hold that a 3-2 score like in baseball or hockey is more my thing, still rare and hard fought but every single run/goal still is HUGE, 3-2 or so just seems perfect, you give both teams a great defensive game with the low score, yet there's still some offense by both, you get to see EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING is on display, and EVERYTHING imust be taken into account for the win. I was just as elated with this goal as I was when the US hit their 3rd or 4th goal home late in the 3rd Period to just beat Canada the first time in the Winter Games (let's not speak about USA-Canada II, still bitter lol.)

But yeah, football goals are fun, and I like that they're rare, better that than 116-110 like in basketball.

And when the USA wins, 1-0 is just fine with me. ;)

As a referee, the "you could just call an overtime and have a clock counting down" wouldn't work, or it would at least be a very different system. In football you can't call the game when a team is on an obvious attack/goal-scoring opportunity. Consider it the football equivalent of a buzzer beater. I can't count how many times we'll be three minutes into my three minutes of stoppage time, the losing team is setting up for a corner and one of the winning players asks how much time is left and I just say "this is the last attack". That "last attack" could theoretically go on for 20+ minutes if the defensive team never ever cleared it, but generally it only lasts for 15-30 seconds obviously. I play a lot of hockey as well (hockey and football are my two sports) and I much rather this system for excitement value. As a north-american football fan I think you can understand it too: think of it like that one last play with zero seconds on the clock. The attacking team goes for a hail mary (or whatever they consider best) and know that it HAS to succeed or they lose. Everyone is tense, everyone's exhausted. Every pass involves a collective gasp from the fans and players, and if one pass is misplaced or a defender manages to lunge at it for a last-ditch clearing attempt, the game is over. On the other hand, if the attackers manage to score, they have in every sense of the word come back from the dead, because they have gone past 90 minutes of play. Past _ number of stoppage minutes, and the referee is only waiting for them to lose it to call the game, but they pull it out of the hat.

Well, anyway, I'm just happy they won, and it's not too insane a system (at least not that, i will still hold there is a RIDICULOUS amount of flopping and penalty-calling, in the Italy-Slovakia game the Slovakian goalie flopped and the ref called him on it an looked pissed! lol... oh, look, they just scored a goal finally, Italy... they're probably dead anyway, if the announcers are to be believed) and better than TERRIBLE basketball (except, again, the football players are flopping just like them...) :/
