So How Does This "Football" Of Yours WORK, World?
I can't escape this World Cup thing... my Bio professor (like a lot of my good professors I've had) is from another land he's football-mad, every second that's not about Bio is a joke or about how awesome football is, how he used to love playing goalie... but I DON'T GET IT! I mean, most of the games so far have been TIES- why is this so popular? (How does this game even WORK? A clock counting up, all these rules...?) Football lovers- explain? :)

A Game With Teams (Europe Map)
I'm experimenting with a new game where there are three main teams, and the center nations are going to be England (Allies), Russia (Communist), and Germany (Axis). If you want to join a team, you have to ask them in private and declare them on the global chat if they say yes. They also have to confirm it on Global Chat.

What Shall We Do With a Drunken Player?
What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player,
Whose forgotten his turn?

No Backstabbing
Anyone interested in a game where you have to declare war on someone before you move into his/her territories (both SCs and Non-SCs) three hours before the turn end and 30 minutes before you finalize your orders? You are going to be in an alliance with someone, you also have to declare it.

Obama's Coast Guard HALTS Oil Spill Clean-up Effort
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/bp-oil-spill-gov-bobby-jindals-wishes-crude/story?id=10946379

I don't even know what to think. It appears Obama - by allowing his coast Guard (He is commander in Chief) to halt an effective clean-up effort - wants (or at least is allowing) the destruction to be worse. Thoughts?

Classics
I'm studying to be a classics major and was wondering if anyone else on the boards has studied/ is studying Latin or Greek. Personally, I intend the first major works that I read in either language to be the epic poems (working on the Iliad right now!). What about you? (and if there are any veteran classicists stalking these forums, do you have any resources to recommend or advice to offer? Thanks!)

Penalty for CDing.
I am sure this has been brought up before, but there really needs to be a harsher penalty for people who go into civil disorder. It completely ruins the game. If if the penalty was 2x or 3x the bet maybe people wouldn't leave the game the moment things go against them.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
19 Jun 10 UTC
Sure but this doesnt prevent n00bs from CDing as they'll have the D refunded anyway.
raapers (3044 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Unfortunately, I don't think anything could stop that. It might give some disincentive though. At the very least it would increase the pot for those who are honorable enough to stick around.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Just stop refunding points when the player CDs. 100 D in CDs and they can no longer play without special mod intervention.
raapers (3044 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Thats a great idea though id say they cant refund if they have more than 1 CD.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
19 Jun 10 UTC
There has been talk about having a deposit that would be forfeited (and go into the pot I assume) if you go CD. So in a 10 D bet game, you might have to also put down a 10 D deposit. Go CD and you just lost 20 D instead of 10 D.
Mafialligator (239 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
I'd be opposed to this.
I agree that CDs can ruin a game, and it's annoying when someone CD's just cause they're losing. But I mean, things come up sometimes and games can go on FOREVER. You can't penalize people for that.
raapers (3044 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Except you can find a sitter or ask for a pause.
raapers (3044 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
And if your only reason for leaving is that the game is taking forever then don't play games with long phase lengths or just accept the penalty for CDing.
Mafialligator (239 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
I suppose
I mean, out of fifty games it's happened to me twice. Not frequently. I'm just arguing that you have to recognize that there is a difference between people who just give up for no reason and people who might have something important come up over the course of the several hours it takes to play a diplomacy game with 5 minute phases.
raapers (3044 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Then just accept the penalty or ask for a pause.
Mafialligator (239 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Hypothetically speaking of course, seeing as there isn't any such penalty at the moment.
Amon Savag (929 D)

Unfortunately, some people really don't have a choice but to leave involuntarily. I have a resign in my record because my internet completely went down as the tower I get net from was blown down by a tornado, and it was in the middle of a live game. Should I really have been penalized for that?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Jun 10 UTC
I think Live CDs and Non-Live (is there a better word for this?) CDs should be considered differently.

In a Live game, it is understandable that something unforeseen can come up. It's unfortunate, but this is only a game.

In Non-Live games, one should have time to find a sitter or ask for a pause. Because of this, I think stronger CD penalties are reasonable.
Amon Savag (929 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
What does CD stand for, anyways?
Mafialligator (239 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Civil Disorder.
And abgemacht I completely agree. I was talking about live games. I've never seen a Civil Disorder in a game with longer phases.
raapers (3044 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
I agree with abgemacht, though worry that might be harder to implement (I have no idea). Also, I would think *most* live games are for a lot fewer points than *most* non-live games and so the multiplier could be the same and still impose a much heavier penalty on those who CD in non-live games.

I have seen many CDs in non-live games (especially on Oli's site) and it is even more frustrating than in live games since not only is the balance of the map thrown off but the entire game gets delayed several days waiting for the phases to end.

raapers, i know its kind of a pain in the ass, but your best bet is to create your own password protected games and advertise them on the forum. that way you can set a criterion, such as total games finished and a maximum left percentage. i did this before and set it at ten finished games and under 5% left. worked like a charm.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

@Mafia - you've been very lucky.

@raapers - Yes, live games seem to be plagued with them. Perhaps we could set up one for 150 D?
Sleepcap (100 D)
20 Jun 10 UTC
Gilgtex implemented a "Reliabilty Rating". With a rating too low you couldn't join live games, even lower you couldn't create new games. And you can't join that many games if your rating dropped too low....

I JUST finished a live game where THREE players CDed so we were gonna two way draw when all of a sudden one shows up and votes draw so we had to three way split. Oh, and btw, the guy who returned had rage CDed
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
20 Jun 10 UTC
@Sleepcap,

That seems like an interesting system. In Gilgtex's implementation, does it replace points or supplement them?
raapers (3044 D)
20 Jun 10 UTC
@Figles -- The problem then is I have to risk 101+ points every time I want to play a live game (that hopefully won't have any CDs) instead of requiring someone who CDs mid-game to pay double or triple the bet? Besides the fact that very few people are willing to risk that much for a live game, that system seems to be punishing the wrong people...

If it would be too difficult to write such a penalty into the game I would drop it, but to me the only valid reason not to introduce the penalty is that some people might be wrongfully penalized when they were accidentally prevented from inputing their orders (by internet problems or whatever). However, I suspect the percentage of 'accidental CDs', as opposed to 'intentional CDs', is very very low. Personally I would rather risk being penalized on the off-chance I lose my internet connection if it meant I could play just 1 game without someone CDing.

@abgemacht: it supplement them.
I just looked at the game Killer mentioned, and holy hell that's funny. It's sad, of course, but damn, I laughed. That's just pathetic...

...also, I just had a game handed to me by a fortunate stab of Turkey by Austria (I was Russia), as well as... three? CDs (though Killer came in as England and put up a valiant defense). I don't mind the win, of course (:P), but this CD stuff is getting old. I'm about to have one of my other games canceled because of it.
killer135 (100 D)
20 Jun 10 UTC
well, in my mind, If you take over a CD or are about to CD, you should at least try to defend to save some balance in the game

There's nothing wrong with setting up a 101 point live game...
killer135 (100 D)
20 Jun 10 UTC
yea, set up a GIANT LIVE GAME and then when someone CDs complain and start a new thread and suggest a 500 point live game and so on
@Amon: I feel sorry for mob victim #1 of a 101-point live game. >_>

Ancient Med is a bad map.
I recommend avoiding this board for diplomacy because it is particularly ill suited to regular diplomacy albeit alright for gunboat. The problem is that due to having only 5 players, a first turn full trust alliance can brute force the game regardless of what the other players do and that is sort of a problem.

I went to a casino for the first time last night, and again tonight. I came out ahead but I can see how easy it would be to lose control of something like that, especially if you got in a hole or were in some altered state. What does the Diplomacy community think of the institution of gambling?
