what exactly constitutes meta-gaming?

So How Does This "Football" Of Yours WORK, World?
I can't escape this World Cup thing... my Bio professor (like a lot of my good professors I've had) is from another land he's football-mad, every second that's not about Bio is a joke or about how awesome football is, how he used to love playing goalie... but I DON'T GET IT! I mean, most of the games so far have been TIES- why is this so popular? (How does this game even WORK? A clock counting up, all these rules...?) Football lovers- explain? :)

A Game With Teams (Europe Map)
I'm experimenting with a new game where there are three main teams, and the center nations are going to be England (Allies), Russia (Communist), and Germany (Axis). If you want to join a team, you have to ask them in private and declare them on the global chat if they say yes. They also have to confirm it on Global Chat.

Umm, i dont believe i am IN any such game. If you DID organise it, why not password it yourself?
Simply organise another one, and the person who "outed" the password is NOT invited?

and only allow three players per team to help balance it out

I was organizing so BenGuin could start it. I felt he had earned the right to start the game as it was his idea. Please review the thread so you can see just what I'm talking about...

My post from last Tues, Jun 15...

Established Rules and Players as of this moment.

1) That there 3 official teams, team leaders being England, Russia, and Germany.

2) That the other four players may apply in private to be included on the team. If the team leader agrees, he will announce in global chat that the applicant is now on the team. The applicant will confirm. If he denies, he is not a member of the team.

3) That, if a team leader is about to be eliminated, the team internally elects a new team member and the old team leader declares him on global. The other team members then confirm. If any deny, it does not go through. However if consensus cannot be reached and the old team leader is eliminated, it automatically defaults to the team member with the most SCs at the time of the old team leader's defeat.

4) That, when having joined a team, members cannot leave until one full year after their joining. (i.e., If France joins with England in Fall 1901, he must remain on England's team THROUGH Fall 1902, only on the Spring 1902 turn can he now be hostile toward England.)

5) That obligations of team membership include:
a) Never supporting the moves or holds of units outside the team unless those units belong to an independent, undeclared power.
b) Never moving against a team member in hostility (Never taking his SCs and never attacking his positions)
c) Taking part in all team votes, and not obstructing team efforts in any way, including by not moving. If a dispute has occurred, it can only manifest itself once the team member is legally able to leave the team
d) Never passing any information to other players outside the team that the team members did not authorize being passed

6) That any of the above obligations can be circumvented if all team members agree that it was acceptable on global chat after the move has occurred. Team members MUST make certain that such moves are acceptable to their team mates BEFORE such moves occur, and if they are not they MUST NOT make the moves. This will be enforced on the honor system.

7) That victory is declared when only one team remains, and that all members of said team are obliged to draw the game immediately following the defeat of the last non-team member.

What would happen if Russia and England worked together? Or was that NOT allowed? don't see anything there about that

Do we seven still wish to play this variant without the usurper punk thieves? If so, chime in and I'll start it with a password and game ID PMd to each player so no thieving asshat punks can get in.

Yes i do- so please organise one and send a PM to each of us?

The three teams can never work together. That was established early in the thread, but not in the rules as Thucy transcribed them. Consider teamwork between teams as verboten.

i'm in for a second one

anyway... i wrote the rules to allow for cooperation among teams... in the same way that there is "cooperation" among the 7 powers in normal games.

do you see what i mean?

say there is a giant England-France-Italy-Austria team.

Then there is a Russia-Turkey team and Germany is alone.

Germany can work with Russia-Turkey against the English team, but can also "stab"

So too can a non-team. Say Italy was not part of any team. Italy could work with the English team against Russia-Turkey, but stab quickly as well.

The stab and cooperations all occur as they would in a normal game, that is, informally and fluidly.

The *teams* exist to, for one, make things a bit different, and two, to prevent such stabs from happening quickly.

So in the original example, Turkey can stab Russia... but he has to wait until his time has expired, and before the attack must announce he has left the Russian team.

I like the additionaly possibility of two small teams standing up to the mega team. That seems fair. After all, I doubt that a small team will help the mega team eliminate the other small team as the small team would then be next to die, giving the mega team the win.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Also, keep in mind that as team membership is FLEXIBLE, one can easily convince people to jump ship and leave the large team.

Especially if the end is near and only one non-affiliated player remains. The prospect of a five-way draw is sure to make at least one team member decide to exit, and he will likely take others with him. Even if the other two original team members are eliminated, remember that team leadership follows a succession system. Only if no one is on the team at the time of the elimination is that team truly "eliminated."

What Shall We Do With a Drunken Player?
What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player,
Whose forgotten his turn?

No Backstabbing
Anyone interested in a game where you have to declare war on someone before you move into his/her territories (both SCs and Non-SCs) three hours before the turn end and 30 minutes before you finalize your orders? You are going to be in an alliance with someone, you also have to declare it.

Obama's Coast Guard HALTS Oil Spill Clean-up Effort
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/bp-oil-spill-gov-bobby-jindals-wishes-crude/story?id=10946379

I don't even know what to think. It appears Obama - by allowing his coast Guard (He is commander in Chief) to halt an effective clean-up effort - wants (or at least is allowing) the destruction to be worse. Thoughts?

The Wosrt Person on WebDiplomacy!
Just for fun... I'm not a big Keith Olbermann fan (though he's better than O'Reilley, but I have always liked his "Worst Person in the World" segment, a clip of one if you've never seen it before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYSJRs6Nr_w So, no personal attacks, JUST in the spirit of fun, stabbers and folks who talk too much on the forum (...) beware, as folks here- name your choice for The Worst Person on WebDip! Classics
I'm studying to be a classics major and was wondering if anyone else on the boards has studied/ is studying Latin or Greek. Personally, I intend the first major works that I read in either language to be the epic poems (working on the Iliad right now!). What about you? (and if there are any veteran classicists stalking these forums, do you have any resources to recommend or advice to offer? Thanks!)

Penalty for CDing.
I am sure this has been brought up before, but there really needs to be a harsher penalty for people who go into civil disorder. It completely ruins the game. If if the penalty was 2x or 3x the bet maybe people wouldn't leave the game the moment things go against them.

Ancient Med is a bad map.
I recommend avoiding this board for diplomacy because it is particularly ill suited to regular diplomacy albeit alright for gunboat. The problem is that due to having only 5 players, a first turn full trust alliance can brute force the game regardless of what the other players do and that is sort of a problem.

I went to a casino for the first time last night, and again tonight. I came out ahead but I can see how easy it would be to lose control of something like that, especially if you got in a hole or were in some altered state. What does the Diplomacy community think of the institution of gambling?
