So How Does This "Football" Of Yours WORK, World?
I can't escape this World Cup thing... my Bio professor (like a lot of my good professors I've had) is from another land he's football-mad, every second that's not about Bio is a joke or about how awesome football is, how he used to love playing goalie... but I DON'T GET IT! I mean, most of the games so far have been TIES- why is this so popular? (How does this game even WORK? A clock counting up, all these rules...?) Football lovers- explain? :)

Sorry, uclabb... but somehow, when you score on nearly 50% of the plays, like you yourself said basketball is closest to... scoring's no longer a great accomplishment.

Take a touchdown; a team will take about 70 snaps, so about 70 plays per side a game on average... and with a final score, something relatively routine, like 27-21, that means one team had three TDs, and another had 3 TDs and 2 FGs...

So out of roughly 140 total plays, only 8 are scoring plays.

That makes those 8 all the more special... and the other plays, it makes THEM special, since you know they were BUILDING towards those few scoring plays.

Baseball- average score of 4-3 or 3-2 or so...

And that's out of a 150+ plays (pitches, pitch outs, stolen bases, etc.) a game.

So again, a few, they stand out, and the other built towards them, that single led to a souble which advances the runners into scoring position so the third hit of the inning can score that 1 run.

Hockey- speaks for itself, how many shots and by contrast how many goals there are.

And... yeah, there HAVE been great "smaller" basketball players, but generally it's a game for giants.

Baseball- doesn't matter.
Hockey- both big and small have advantages, so size isn't too big a factor.
American Football- it DOES help, size... but all sizes are needed, so if you're five foot six inches, yeah, you probably can't play defensive end... but kicker and punter and some halfbacks, they're that size... and conversely, if you're huge, you can easily play a lineman or alinebacker, but maybe not quarterback or halfback, something yu have to be smaller and more elusive for.

Basketball- unless your name's "Jordan" "Kobe" or "Magic" pretty much, you need a giant...

I don't mind ties at all - think of NZ-Italy where a tie was a victory for NZ and a defeat for Italy... definitely high drama. That said, I'm fully in favor of overtime... and fully against shootouts. Why not go like a baseball game where it simply won't end until there is a score (and a complete inning)? If a baseball game is tied after 9 innings you wouldn't want to determine the winner with a home-run derby, would you?

...and I do agree with Obi to the extent that I think there is a sweet-spot of several goals per game... You don't want everything to hinge on a single mistake - at the same time you don't want a point to be such a minor thing (such as in NBA basketball) where you might as well tune in only for "crunch time" (at least in regular season games). I am a fan of indoor soccer for that reason... but despite my minor gripe that I think that outdoor international football could live with a tweak or two, I still love the game. One question... do Obiwan and others who complain about a 1-0 football score also complain about a 1-0 baseball pitching dual? Some would say that such a dual is the highest form of the game of baseball.

Anyone who claims international football is not physical hasn't played. It demands everything you can give it... and it can never be mastered.

As far as not being able to watch the puck in hockey... that alone makes the sport virtually unwatchable for me.

As for the clock going up - I'm a fan of that... it emphasizes that the game is not over until the whistle blows... the ref adds time at his discretion and allows an attack to be resolved before calling the game. I also like the fact that the ref doesn't have to explain a darn thing to the players as far as his calls... this obviously sets up a strong need for the leagues to police their refs... but you don't want the players and coaches and to be policing them - that is no advantage. I'm sick to death of NBA players and coaches trying to get calls in their favor by wheedling and arguing with the refs during and after plays and into the next plays... and it working with make up calls, etc. The ref should be treated like a force of nature that you simply deal with.

A Game With Teams (Europe Map)
I'm experimenting with a new game where there are three main teams, and the center nations are going to be England (Allies), Russia (Communist), and Germany (Axis). If you want to join a team, you have to ask them in private and declare them on the global chat if they say yes. They also have to confirm it on Global Chat.

What Shall We Do With a Drunken Player?
What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player,
Whose forgotten his turn?

No Backstabbing
Anyone interested in a game where you have to declare war on someone before you move into his/her territories (both SCs and Non-SCs) three hours before the turn end and 30 minutes before you finalize your orders? You are going to be in an alliance with someone, you also have to declare it.

Obama's Coast Guard HALTS Oil Spill Clean-up Effort
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/bp-oil-spill-gov-bobby-jindals-wishes-crude/story?id=10946379

I don't even know what to think. It appears Obama - by allowing his coast Guard (He is commander in Chief) to halt an effective clean-up effort - wants (or at least is allowing) the destruction to be worse. Thoughts?

The Wosrt Person on WebDiplomacy!
Just for fun... I'm not a big Keith Olbermann fan (though he's better than O'Reilley, but I have always liked his "Worst Person in the World" segment, a clip of one if you've never seen it before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYSJRs6Nr_w So, no personal attacks, JUST in the spirit of fun, stabbers and folks who talk too much on the forum (...) beware, as folks here- name your choice for The Worst Person on WebDip! Classics
I'm studying to be a classics major and was wondering if anyone else on the boards has studied/ is studying Latin or Greek. Personally, I intend the first major works that I read in either language to be the epic poems (working on the Iliad right now!). What about you? (and if there are any veteran classicists stalking these forums, do you have any resources to recommend or advice to offer? Thanks!)

Penalty for CDing.
I am sure this has been brought up before, but there really needs to be a harsher penalty for people who go into civil disorder. It completely ruins the game. If if the penalty was 2x or 3x the bet maybe people wouldn't leave the game the moment things go against them.

Ancient Med is a bad map.
I recommend avoiding this board for diplomacy because it is particularly ill suited to regular diplomacy albeit alright for gunboat. The problem is that due to having only 5 players, a first turn full trust alliance can brute force the game regardless of what the other players do and that is sort of a problem.

Gamblig. What Say You?
I went to a casino for the first time last night, and again tonight. I came out ahead but I can see how easy it would be to lose control of something like that, especially if you got in a hole or were in some altered state. What does the Diplomacy community think of the institution of gambling?
