With A Map In Hand, How Do You Program That Into A Webdip-Viable Board?
Besides my Middle East one, which is obviously easy to get a map for, I have a new one I'd like to make.

I would like, being the nerd I am, a Star Trek variant, with the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, the Dominion, Bajorans, and Borg... oh yes, I AM a Trekker nerd, but come on, Trek is perfectly suited to Dip (and the Middle EAst DEFINITELY IS!) ;)

For making a map Photoshop or Gimp would totally work, although there may be easier software if you have no experience. Anyway, if you decide to use Photoshop I volunteer to answer your questions or do a bit of the work if you get stuck.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I'll vouch for Gimp.
However, for actually developing the links etc Ghost&I found using a vector program was a better idea (infact we used Publisher for a bit!)
"Let's say you need 10 centers held and 2 builds that turn and it's your only build, how is that?"

Actually, for a 2-move unit, that seems almost a bit strenuous. Certainly an agreeable compromise if you really want Heroes.

And again, as long as you keep the game relatively balanced, additions like wormholes are reasonable. Diplomacy has so many back doors anyway -- how many Englands have been shocked by the moves F Bre -> MAO, F MAO -> Spa (sc), only to see both ships move up into NAO/MAO the next turn and pin Liverpool? -- that a wormhole isn't a big stretch. And, ultimately, it's a Star Trek-themed variant; what would it be without wormholes?

Inkscape is an excellent free vector graphics (SVG) editing program.
hopsyturvy (521 D)

This might be boring, but can I suggest that playtesting should maybe come before programming?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
Yes, I would definitely support Inkscape, although in practical terms it can be quite annoying to get used to.
@Hopsy - its often easier to find a suitable audience on here than try playing things manually. Also, encoding a variant is surprisingly easy to do, so really its not too much of an issue.

I'd like to suggest a Kahn hero unit, which would make it appropriate for someone to scream "KAHN!" when getting attacked. :)
hopsyturvy (521 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
Figle - I see your point. but surely that doesn't apply so much if you're trying something more complicated (i.e. the hero units?)
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Oh right yes, I agree on that bit.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

i'm chucking the hero units, too much trouble...

can we get a wormhole/railroad?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
OK, designing the map now on Photoshop...

Also, if the railroad.wormhole can't be programmed in, I had the idea to maybe make the Bajoran Wormhole and the Borg Trans-Warp Hub two really long, slender non-ceter nuetrals, and then you can still travel quickly through space along those routes like in "real" life (ie, Trek)...

Any suggestions?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
What do you mean by these wormholes? Do you just mean a unit can move from one territory to another on the far side of the map?
I'm sure you've explained, but I haven't been following every post (it may seem like it, but I don't *actually* live on these forums).
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
I mean this:

http://www.stdimension.org/Cartography/Source/map_stency.gif

The Wormhole shown there is The Bajoran Wormhole, it "connects"/"goes through" deep into the Dominion, passes through the entire Cardassian Union, and "let's out" right near Bajor and Terrak Nor/Deep Space 9, which are close to each other, and both nuetral centers.

So basically it connects two great "Western" powers here- the Dominion and Cardassians- and lets out right near the third player in that, at the area of nuetrals that seperates (at least at the start of the game) Cardassia and the Federation.

Whoever controls that wromhole has a BIG advantage (though not an insurmountable one, as I'll explain) as that is essentially the Diplomacy equivalent of connecting French territory near a bullet train to German territory and having it let out near Norway, where it's nuetral, but of concern to England and Germany, and even Russia.

A BIG advantage, needless to say- but this is space, and a real landmakr, so it makes sense. The DRAWBACK of the wormhole, however, is that it's a two-way street, so you CAN use that to, like the Dominion does in "Star Trek: Deep Space 9," launch the equivalent of a Space Blitzkrieg and send units FAST into battle... but by the same token, the other side can use it too, so you then have to guard/hold that space a bit, otherwise you suddenly went from in the driver's seat to an enemy ship outside your capital center.

This adds ANOTHER layer to it, as then... WHO guards it? Generally the Cardassians and Domion are either great friends and go in STRONG against the Federation (and nearly take them over) or else the two bicker and can end up destroying each other.

This is a bullet train... but it's also like one BIG version of the English Channel or Galicia- it can be the key to victory, but move there and it could also mean instant war.

The Borg Trans-Warp Hub is a bit different, as it's also a bit more difficult... it's NOT a straight line, like the Bajoran Wormhole, which is straightfoward and makes perfect sense in Diplomacy terms- balancing the oh-so-precious gift of FAR faster movement with the possibility of having that same tool being used against you in an epic stab, or if you stp out of line.

The Borg Trans-Warp Hub connects DIFFERENT parts of the galaxy together at a central Borg Hub deep in their space, and that's how they can get anywhere and get there fast. To use another analogy- The Bajoran Wormhole is a bullet train that cuts across dangerously hot-bed territory; The Borg Trans-Warp Hub is like a railroad station, and can send you MULTIPLE places.

THIS would, again, be a very long, very slender non-center nuetral that has branches, one going west towards nuetrals and let's out near the Dominion's border, one going south for nuetrals, and one that goes southwest, at basically a 45 degree angle, and let's out right at the Romulan Nuetral Zone, which borders both the Romulans and Federation (as the name implies, that's there "buffer zone," and the Borg did actually use the Hub to go there in an episode...)

The upsides and downsides here are also very straightfoward- as it is a path to many nuetrals and the Hub's Arms border Dominion, Federation, and Romulan space, you now can get Borg Cubes, one at a time, true to the series, wherever they need to go FAST, even faster than someone can get back at you, generally, since this starts in Borg space. This IS somewhat needed, as the Borg are really very far from the other Five of the Big Six, and we need all the Big Six, it's just not a party without the Borg, and they introduce so many balances and new Diplomacy options; when you can send a fleet to border three seperate powers/nuetrals near them simultaneously, you can make some VERY interesting deals and demands.

The obvious drawback- you move there, and you instantly PISS OFF three powers (unless one of them called for it, of course) and you become more suspicious than a Russia-Turkey Jugernaut at 10 powers apiece... again, this fits, the Borg are very much loners, and only deal when they have to, they use this sort of thing for gunboat diplomacy (when they talk at all.)

The last great help of the wormholes- this is going to be a map with a LOT in it, a lot of planets and a lot of open space... wormholes like this help bring a new dimension as well as the potential for at least the threat of blitzkried attacks, where otherwise, in this huge space, your enemy could possibly see you coming far and away...

Also don't forget- if I make these (as it looks like I will) non-center nuetrals and NOT railoroads, getting in doesn't mean a flash attack instantly, because you have to MOVE from the Wormhole or Hub the NEXT turn towards those nuetrals or your enemy... so this will add a dimension of Diploming to it and allow for faster strikes, but not so fast you're dead and never knew what hit you.

OK, well, can't find my copy of Photoshop, and the application on Facebook doesn't save my work right (used to work, dunno what's up there) and... well, tried it, and Gimp's now and... it's odd to get used to, so much like Photoshop, and yet so maddening trying to get straight the little differences straight...

So right now I'm sketching the map by pen and paer, I have the backdrop (our Milky Way Galaxy, an "overhead" with the spiraling arms matching the four quadrants in Star Trek, lots of blues and purles and black and white in there, looks nice, will fill in the non-planet areas nicely) and so tonight after I finish my sketch I'll try again with either Gimp or the Inkscape one, I know I can get this going, it's just the little things right now...

There should be a way to upload/download custom maps with ease. Of course, these new maps shouldn't be betting games...
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
@Kish:

Yeah, I just have to make a BMP version of the map (and the units, but the units will be easy) and from there get someone to code it, since I have no clue how to do that at all...

The map I hope to make good progress on tonight, about halfway done with my sketch (I like the way this is going to play, but I will say this- the map DOES cluster some, due to Trek's nautre doing that... you'll have a couple of spaces for an expanse, and then about three or four centers together with a couple non-center nuetrals there as well, so six places all up for brabs, it's basically like there are a few spots that end up being like the Balkans... and one of the BEST ones is right where The Bajoran Wormhole is, that thing is going to cause some diplomatic WARS... it borders about 10-12 spots, and most of those planets (this is out of roughly 50 planets, give or take a few) and so you can exit anywhere along that line, support anywhere along that line... but the same's true of the enemy, with so much bordering it it would be VERY easy to cut any support the Wormhole would try to give... just awesome... the Federation-Klingon border is looking good, too, a lot of good, classic planets there, and a lot to negotiate there... still have to do the Dominion, the Romulans and Romulan Nuetral Zone, the Fed-Cardassian Demilitarized Zone, and the Delta Quadrant with Borg territory and their Trans-Warp Hub... but coming along nicely...
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
So the answer was yes: its just a simple move path between non-adjacent locations.
That's very easy to do.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
Designing the map now on Gimp... the hardest thing I forsee is going to be fitting everything in, about 50 or so planets and then the necessary non-center space areas...

It'll look (looks) verk grid-like, as there really isn't any real nice way to do borders here, even in Trek everytime there's a map it's a grid...

I just put the first spot (The Care Taker's Array, a non-center nuetral) and nuetral planet (Ocampa) on... and with an actual, 25 pixel image of the planet Ocampa, so all the planets, it worked so well, are going to be 25 pixels.

Am I supposed to "color in" the areas that are starting territories, ie, color within the grid of Earth blue, denoting it's a Federation Planet, or is that done by a code?

The color scheme, btw (unless anyone else has a suggestion):

Federation: Blue
Klingon: Red
Romulan: Deep Green
Cardassian: Orange
Dominion: ? (Ideas?)
Borg: Pale Grey

And all the text and grid/bordering is yellow, set against the space, yellow shows up best (and has that TOS feeling to it...)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
When you're making it, each territory should be a different colour - all distinct from oneanother.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
^
I assume you mean all nation territories should be a different color, and the nuetrals a different color still?

obiwanobiwan (248 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
And btw, again, as I'm almost done on my sketch designing the Cardassian, Dominion and Western Federation areas, the western half of the board...

Does Romulus exist here or not? It got blown up by that supernova, but I don't think it'd be fun to play without it...
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Dominion: Purple

also is it fair putting the Dominion in? they have a really strong stalemate line with about 6 supply centres beyond the bajorian wormhole.

If they can get out of this one territory everyone else will be screaming for all the pain...
Mafialligator (239 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
Romulus should exist. I know it got blown up but still. Let's assume this game takes place before then.
Also, the Dominion should be purple shouldn't they?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
I thought purple too, but I thought folks might say that should go to the Romulans (the whole Roman Senate/Romulan connection...)

But purple it is...

I'm thinking we can set this game "Spring" 2371, that's right before the Dominion War and subsequent Borg/Federation conflicts in "First Contact" and all the Romulan goings-on with "Nemesis" and "Star Trek XI."

Right now my main worry is fitting everything in... a lot of stuff... we might have some VERY tiny spaces in a few places (but the same's true in Diplomacy, Albania's a blip, so I guess that's OK.)

Without the Dominion we have 5... and then there's no one to balance the Cardassians in the Gamma Quadrant, also known as the Northeast portion of the board, THEY would take everything without question... at least with both of them you have friction, as really that wormhole is a gun pointed at the Federation, but also a knife held to each of their throats, because one misstep and...

Plus I like and want all the Big Six, so I'm gonna try...

Why would Austria ever attack Italy first?
After being the victim of this mind-boggling attack thrice in a row between here and the Facebook Diplomacy app, I feel compelled to ask. The Italian attack on Austria is risky, but justifiable, particularly if Italy can convince Turkey to focus on Russia... but I cannot for the life of me find an advantage to Austria *initiating* the attack. Responding to a stab, sure. But starting the fight?

Why so little interest in a live World map?
I've seen at least three attempts to get a live world game going (counting the one I've been advertising for the past two days), and I'm a little surprised how little interest there is. Seems like it'd be great fun especially since there is no default strategy ingrained for each nation. So, why so little interest? And if there is interest, when would people be willing to set that up?

Rules Question...
I am playing Austria in the game "Hello Everyone!" In the Spring 1902 I attempt to move into Budapest from Trieste with support from Serbia and Rumania. The Italian player's army in Budapest attempts to move into Trieste with support from Venice. I know that armies cannot cross paths (i.e. move into each other's locations). But as far as I can tell I have overwhelming force (3 vs. 2). Can someone explain why my move did not succeed?
