With A Map In Hand, How Do You Program That Into A Webdip-Viable Board?
Besides my Middle East one, which is obviously easy to get a map for, I have a new one I'd like to make.

I would like, being the nerd I am, a Star Trek variant, with the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, the Dominion, Bajorans, and Borg... oh yes, I AM a Trekker nerd, but come on, Trek is perfectly suited to Dip (and the Middle EAst DEFINITELY IS!) ;)

fight the solo and risk two game-long enemies eliminating you, thus rewarding them with a three-way draw?:

Why would Austria ever attack Italy first?
After being the victim of this mind-boggling attack thrice in a row between here and the Facebook Diplomacy app, I feel compelled to ask. The Italian attack on Austria is risky, but justifiable, particularly if Italy can convince Turkey to focus on Russia... but I cannot for the life of me find an advantage to Austria *initiating* the attack. Responding to a stab, sure. But starting the fight?

Why so little interest in a live World map?
I've seen at least three attempts to get a live world game going (counting the one I've been advertising for the past two days), and I'm a little surprised how little interest there is. Seems like it'd be great fun especially since there is no default strategy ingrained for each nation. So, why so little interest? And if there is interest, when would people be willing to set that up?

Rules Question...
I am playing Austria in the game "Hello Everyone!" In the Spring 1902 I attempt to move into Budapest from Trieste with support from Serbia and Rumania. The Italian player's army in Budapest attempts to move into Trieste with support from Venice. I know that armies cannot cross paths (i.e. move into each other's locations). But as far as I can tell I have overwhelming force (3 vs. 2). Can someone explain why my move did not succeed?

Should I have drawn this game?
Details inside, but basically it was a live WTA gunboat and my main competition CDed.
I was playing in a live WTA gunboat last night http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=31520. I was Italy, and Germany was on his way to a victory; at the start of 1907 he had 12 centers, Austria and I both had 8 and we were fighting. Austria CDed and I took 9 centers in 2 years (and 2 more the next year, but 11 in 3 years isn't quite as impressive sounding as 9 in 2. But I digress.) Once Austria was gone, should I have drawn the game? Germany clearly deserved the win, and it was a WTA game so he ended up with nothing.

No. Not your fault he CDed.

Do whatever you can to win.

That being said, if I were Germany, I'd be pissed.

I think you should have drawn. If I were in your shoes, I would have lost interest in the game and drawn it.

Also: Germany CDed himself, so he can screw himself.

I was in that game as Rus, and I don't blame you for taking the win, although I would have preferred the draw! Play to win and only draw if you have to. Unfortunately CD's are part of the game (even in long-phase, high-stake, Ghostrating challenge games), and part of being a good player lies in your ability to adapt to the changing map. Good win.
ava2790 (232 D(S))

I cded myself because Italy was getting a win from a CD. Russia had been allied with Italy from the start and was attacking me so that Italy could eat up all the dead SCs Southeast. I was pissed as hell. I decided to leave and get myself some drinks.

I'd have appreciated the draw - it would have been fairest. But screw the honor system, right? I'd rather resign from an unfair situation than stand by and watch someone else win.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I probably would have drawn, but I don't think it should be expected of you.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
16 Jun 10 UTC
Tusky, I'm sorry to say, but you got your last 10 centers for free, basically, whereas I'd spent the past two hours (9 game years) kicking ass to get to 13. There might have been some chance of putting up a stand against Italy, but he was past the stalemate line in the South anyway and Russia was attacking me.

Just know that you have angered the beast...thanks to you I've stayed at 666 D since last night.

And rlumley, stuff yourself mate :P "Please post those opinions in the 'drivel' thread"
V+ (5402 D)
16 Jun 10 UTC
@ ava2790: I hate to disagree with you, chum, but I wasn't attacking you so Ita could win. I was merely trying to defend myself against your attacks! Meawhile, if you'd stuck around, you would have seen that my final build was in Sev, not War, clearly indicating my desire to defend against Ita and play for the draw.

Yeah, I seem to agree with abgermacht. I would have drawn because the CD is the reason you won, but many players are more ruthless/competitive when it comes to the game than I am, so I wouldn't expect you to draw it.
rlumley (0 DX)
16 Jun 10 UTC
I'll clarify what I said: I would have drawn if, in my experience, players dealt on a basis of mutual respect when people CD. Instead, it's my experience that they will do anything to get ahead, including abusing a CD.

That's why I don't feel bad about it - it's been done to me numerous times.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
16 Jun 10 UTC
I join that list with Tom & Abge.

Yes I would have drawn, because the result was thrown by the CD.
That said, I am far more forgiving on that sort of thing than most people, and often try to vote through cancels in my games (giving away my identity) if someone doesn't turn up.

So, just as you probably expected before, opinion is split: You can take the moral high-ground or the points and people won't be too surprised either way.
Thanks for the input everyone. If this exact situation comes up again in the future I'll probably end up drawing it, but if it wasn't a gunboat I would keep on going: if Russia and Germany had been able to talk to each other and organize they could have forced the draw. I don't care about the points enough to need to take such a cheap win, and I really didn't deserve it.

Rlum-we've probably all got screwed that way, I don't get why that makes you want to screw other people the same way. All that does is make it more likely the next person will screw you and you'll deserve it too..
