Is there any way to get him put into CD? We've got a game where a player went into CD, and then came back just so that everyone would have to wait for him to not do anything.
It seems he is persistently using the CD mechanic to force the rest of the players to wait because he got eliminated early. I was pretty sure this behavior was unkosher, is there anything that can be done?
Out of interest, why is Egypt so disadvantaged in your opinion? The search function shows Egypt can win - albeit doing so less often than some of the other countries.
I got hammered as Greece in my first try, albeit a 5 minute live one, maybe not the best way to enter a new "environment". Looking back, I think it's most important to get from 3 to 6 SC's right away in year one - any less and you're toast. Same goes for year two - to win it, you should already be at nine SC's by then.... How to do that from each of the countries is something I would need to look more closely at. Persia looked awesome to me, as did Carthage. Egypt did look like an "Austria" to me......
The map seems to have been designed to be very close to symmetrical and balanced. Alliances are important, and in my experience, anybody can do well. As Pantalone mentioned, expansion is key. Everybody can get to six the first year with no competition, so most clashes will not happen until the second year.
I've dont only one game, but it seemes quite easy to "squash" a power with a solid alliance on both sides of it. I'ts like everyone starts in a postion much like Italy (or Austria) in classicdip. Then again, i should play some more!
I agree with sqrg. Diplomacy is very, very important the first two years. Any nation will crumble if attacked by it's two neighbours, in addition you should get the two remaining countries fighting each other. It is therefor very important to look for signs of the first war and plan your true alliance accordingly.
I only have played 1 game and in that case Egypt and Persia were the same player, but they were so Obnoxious that the other 3 players made an alliance against them. Rome and Carthage is a very powerful alliance as if you trust the other, then you can leave a lot of the back of the board empty to move the army's to the front lines
a) Egypt is definately not weak b) Greece represents the equivalent of Austria in standard games, because it immediately borders at least 3 out of 5, while every other country immediately borders with 2 more.
It is a game of careful balance though, as 5 players is not much, and it usually ends as 2 vs 1 and 1 to 1 after the first phase.
What really sucks about it however are the tanks in the medieval scenario, lets have an ancient Greek soldier graphic and a trireme for such scenarios please!!! :)
Silver, if you want to do it yourself, you could :P At least make some graphics and ask for implementation on the forums. Check the install package for examples of the unit images used, i saw them in there somewhere.
There are no weak countries if your Diplomatic Mojo is good, including Austria. I am currently playing my first An. Med. game as Egypt and having no problems. That's why I don't like gunboats, btw, it creates bad starting position because of the inability to negotiate.

Being and Nothingness and Life and Death... and "Zelda?"
I saw on the "Zelda" series and Philosophy and it had an intersting idea: when you are playing as Link in Zelda... what IS death? You "die," but you can "come back" with extra "lives." When you pause the game, what "happens" to Link, going with the game-as-life allegory of the book- pause the game and Link's in limbo? Shut the game OFF? Is Link then nothingness... or "saved," as in the game? Life and death and allegory- views?
High Stakes game, and it needs players!
