If a player says 'i quit' ...
Is there any way to get him put into CD? We've got a game where a player went into CD, and then came back just so that everyone would have to wait for him to not do anything.

It seems he is persistently using the CD mechanic to force the rest of the players to wait because he got eliminated early. I was pretty sure this behavior was unkosher, is there anything that can be done?

So is this like the most freakin' liberal website on the planet?
Seriously. I come over into the forum once every blue moon, and there's ALWAYS something about politics/religion/something, and I've noticed a trend...

this question gets me "A significant advantage of a one-party state is that it avoids all the arguments that delay progress in a democratic political system." the counter is of course that it is not considered an advantage for one party systems because the considered advantage of multiparty democracies is that they have an opposition party to cirticise and question decisions, and that this (while it may slow decsion making) will improve the quality of the decision.

But having never considered it in that light I do think that there are situations where a delay is less useful than an immediate decision - in life you don't make all decisions by carefully wieghing up the options (for example when wlkaing down the street you automatically avoid other people without even thinking about it) In politics there may be situations when a faster decision is optimal, and if a multi-party system can't do so then this is a disadvantage. (that doesn't mean it is always a disadvantage; but still it is the advantage of one party systems... you can compare it to the advantage of carefully considered and discussed decision which ahs it's own advantages - but i tend to agree with the statment - even if i would prefer to live in a multiparty system - for me it is a matter of prespective....

It seems to me that the real advantage of democracy is transfer of power. This is how I explained it to my daughter when she was 4:

The problem with a king is that people can't tell him to quit when they think he's doing a bad job. So they have to make him leave. But the king has soldiers, and so a lot of times it turns into a war. When people think the president is doing a bad job, they can vote him out. So having a president means we can get rid of the person in charge without having a war.

@pastoralan your answer assumes that the king lives in a bubble and therefore does not hear the cries of the common man and while in most cases he does live in a bubble whilst growing up he is in fear of a coup. It's similar to an animal being just as scared of us as we are of them. The commoners have such high numbers that all the king's horses and all the king's men could not fight to put the nation back together again.
P.S. guess the nursery rhyme :P

@Turi: "@pastoralan your answer assumes that the king lives in a bubble and therefore does not hear the cries of the common man"

Oh my, oh my. The biggest problem is that there will eventually be a king who lives in a bubble - or rather, ignores the world around him.

Never underestimate human greed. And as Lincoln said: (was it Lincoln?) "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."
orathaic (1009 D(B))

@pastoralan: yes i agree entirely.
Democracies are stable because you can remove people from pwoer without needing to overturn the whole system - the system has stability built in. That is a great advantage and i'm not sure that the opposition is actually of that much use.

Ok if all government actions can be reviewd by their opposition then they can be analysed better, but since they are the opposition and they spend all their time saying whatever the government is doing is wrong (no matter what the government happens to be doing) this government wouldn't do anything if it needed their approval all the time, and further nobody is going to listen to the opposition because they ALWAYS say whatever is being done is wrong because that is their job!

I'm sure it is similar in the two party system you have in the US, but in Ireland we have two and a half parties. I know both of the main parties will always just complain about the other's policies even though i can't tell the difference between the two.
At one point Ghostmaker said he was going to get a "political compass" of the whole site based on our posted responses to our own political compasses. Website link is here: politicalcompass.org Someone ask Ghost whatever happened to that.

Being and Nothingness and Life and Death... and "Zelda?"
I saw on the "Zelda" series and Philosophy and it had an intersting idea: when you are playing as Link in Zelda... what IS death? You "die," but you can "come back" with extra "lives." When you pause the game, what "happens" to Link, going with the game-as-life allegory of the book- pause the game and Link's in limbo? Shut the game OFF? Is Link then nothingness... or "saved," as in the game? Life and death and allegory- views?
