I saw District 9 last night. Excellent. Totally not what I expected from the trailers, the many teaser websites they put up, and so on. The CGI was amazing -- Jackson and WETA did some amazing things with Gollum, but it pales in comparison to what they've accomplished in D9. When the flick was over, I was amazed to realize I didn't think, "Oh, that's obviously a CGI effect" even once during the film, and having been in the multimedia production business, I'm normally pretty critical about that sort of thing.
You couldn't pay me to go see Transformers after the abortion that was the first one. But I hated the entire vapid, glare-filled, wooden-acting, twitch-oriented, plot-hole-riddled script experience of Star Trek, too, and it seems that everybody who loved that also loved Transformers.
Looking forward to GI Joe though, for no good reason at all...
