W-T-A games VS P-P-S-C games (discussion)
A thread for discussion the pros and cons with our two types of games available here at Webdiplomacy.
Perry6006 (5409 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
First of all - What a great site Webdiplomacy is, for the promotion of the Diplomacy hobby!
Very well done, Moderators, Webmasters & Developers!

Anyhow -
I was brought up under the 'Old Regime' of Diplomacy, where you either Won (solo 18 sc) or Lost.
Even the draw was somewhat frowned upon. Especially the 3-way draw.

Now I am curious what 'modern' Dip players think of our different playing systems: PPSC and WTA.

As for myself:

PPSC:
Imho it seems like these games often break down into two players just sharing the board.
Typically it ends in a 19-15 win for the larger power, or maybe with a 3rd power sitting at 1 or 2 SCs.
In these types of games, the runner-up (2nd place) could actually be better off supporting the larger player
to his 18th SC, thus preventing a 3-way draw (which divides the pts into 3 equal pots).

The cut-off line is at 12 SCs. If the runner-up is at 12 scs or more, he is better off having the game
end in a solo, then in a 3-way draw.

While this would have been atrocious back in the 'Old Days', I still can see that PPSC has many merits:

PROS
- It is more likely to attract new players (they can win pts by playing for runner-ups , gets the enjoyment
of getting a large power at end of game, games are pretty straightforward with strong alliances)

- Games are more action-oriented, and seldomly/never gets bogged down into position play for a stalemate line.

CONS
- It is kind of dull, with those large game-sweeping alliances. Not too much excitement either. Once you've got 9-10
SCs , you know that it matters little wheter you "win" the solo, or become runner-up. It all becomes a mechanical matter
of moving units.

- Not much point in stabbing anyone, is there? What matters if you end up on 15, 16, 17 or 18 SCs? The score is just about the
same anyways.

WTA
This is the way to play the game, once you have reached some experience, imho
WTA means that you must take into consideration long-term effect of your moves.

Several nations gets weaker in WTA play than in PPSC games. Who wants to ally with Turkey - when the goal is 18 SC, and
Turkey can only expand over the corpses of any foolish ally?

Games are much more cutthroat under WTA, with more excitement; you have to form alliances that you know must be breached at some point during the game. But when? And will you be stabbing or be stabbed?

As for cons:
- WTA can put some people off. It is not for everybody. You will be betrayed. You are likely to face more lies in a WTA game. It could alienate people.
- Some people think it is silly to score 0 D for 16 SC country, when your opponent score 18 SC for the solo win. I don't think that is a problem, btw ; you should've stopped the soloing player, instead of scooping up centers for yourself!

Basically, start out with PPSC, and when you feel you've grasped the basics, move over to WTA. Both have their merits, but I am sure about my general preference; WTA is the way to go...

Happy gaming

WTA > PPSC...
djbent (2572 D(S))
18 Aug 09 UTC
what jacob said.
While this has been discussed ad nausem every other month, while everything said about PPSC is true, with WTA, people are too afraid to be shut out of points, so that they go for draws quicker than they would in a PPSC game. Not losing becomes more important than winning.

Great topic, keep it coming. I've not thought about this one in a while.
djbent (2572 D(S))
18 Aug 09 UTC
@DbJ - that is true. i'm not so sure it's just about points though, b/c that same dynamic can happen even in 35 pot games.

the flip side is that it's a natural aspect of the game - people are more attuned to the balance of power, so draws are more likely to happen as every angles for position and to not let any one power get too big.
djbent (2572 D(S))

*everyone angle for position

I completely agree with DJ. I've heard draw discussions in WTA games in 1903. And no one 'lets' anyone get to 18 in WTA games (with experienced players), so it usually comes down to two powerful forces, and one minor ally that flips back and forth to prevent 18... so you end up with 3-way draws 90% of the time...
fortknox (2059 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
(DJ = dingleberryJones in my reply, btw)

@djbent: I agree that it has more to do with wins than points now-a-days... but that is TGM's fault... a loss to a bad opponent or a win against a major opponent could mean big rank chance in TGM's rankings...
djbent (2572 D(S))
18 Aug 09 UTC
i don't think a loss to a bad opponent means any more than any other kind of loss, but i could be wrong. at least that's what i think i've heard TGM say. and i don't see it as fault - i don't like how points play into the equation, i rather see people just play the game. of course having points is nice for playing with different people, but once we're over like 600 or 700, we're pretty much set.

as for draw talk in 1903 - well duh! i'll talk draw in 1901 if it helps me get an alliance or trounce someone else. i'll talk draw every year. and sometimes i'll follow through on it, and sometimes i won't. but i'd take an early/not perfect draw anyday over someone helping another person win just so they can get a an extra 3 D for each SC they capture. that happened recently to me (IN A 35 D POT GAME!!!!!) and i was so flabbergasted. i mean, really? you really are going to stop trying to keep the other guy from winning so you can get 1 D for each SC you take off me, who is fighting him? to me that's just pathetic.
Centurian (3257 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
I completely agree with Dingle on this one. Everyone slams PPSC for encouraging survival play for the runner up, but Winner Takes All usually amounts to the top three players spliting the pot. I've been playing more WTA recently and I like the dynamic, but it only reallly gets as cut throat as advertised if someone makes a mistake and someone else might actually solo.
Centurian (3257 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
I should also point out how it easy it is to win a low level PPSC game. So much so that I don't take any stock in numbers of wins like I used to.

I'm strongly in favor of formalizing the Ghost Ratings on the site by including them on our profiles.
djbent (2572 D(S))
18 Aug 09 UTC
@centurian - i think it can get very cutthroat with the right mix of folks. and since stabbing someone really is all about taking advantage of a weakness they've allowed to develop, i think it's only natural that that is when it happens. you don't stab just for the sake of stabbing. it has to be timed right.

i have to say, i'm sitting for someone who is only in PPSC games right now, and it's really not fun for me. i can't organize others to fight against the big power who is about to solo, and everyone just fights amongst themselves. this experience has really reinforced my opinion about the superiority of WTA, despite its flaws.
djbent (2572 D(S))
18 Aug 09 UTC
but this conversation has convinced me to join the masters tournament, since that will be the most pure form of WTA, since only solos count.
Centurian (3257 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
I've played my last dozen normal games (ie non gfdt or league) as WTA games and I have only gotten a survive once (and a one sc survive at that). The rest being defeats or wins or draws. I suppose thats a selling point?
Perry6006 (5409 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
The most common result of a WTA game, would be the 3-way draw.
Still, the dynamic of the game, up to that point, and the jockeying for position , and the risk of the stab, among the last three, all makes it worthwhile for me.

D-Points? What's that really? I'm in there, in order to have a great gaming experience. As for that - WTA is the way to go!
fortknox (2059 D)

I'd be surprised to see ANY solos in the masters, djbent... seriously.
djbent (2572 D(S))
18 Aug 09 UTC
seriously? why?
Onar (131 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
One thing I hate about playing WTA is that more often than not, games end in draws. Draws aren't fun for me, and crafting a stalemate line is even less enjoyable. Maybe I just don't have the endurance for that kind of marathon play, but that's just my two cents.
LOL. I LOVE stalemate lines. I find it very satisfying to stop someone from winning by make a stalemate line. I hate non-stalemated draws though.
Onar (131 D)
18 Aug 09 UTC
But is there ever really a stalemate? Unless it is a two-way, the stalemate can become an ever-shifting thing.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
19 Aug 09 UTC
Well, in the SOW 1 game there is a stalemate between Italy/Germany and Turkey. Turkey couldn't do anything militarily to make progress.

But there isn't a stalemate between Italy and Germany. So why doesn't Italy attack Germany to pick up the centers needed to win? Because attacking Germany would give those centers to Turkey allowing Turkey to win. So diplomatically Italy can not attack Germany.

Germany can't do anything either or Turkey will win.

So one country has reached a military stalemate while another has reached a diplomatic stalemate and the little guy is just happy to be alive.
fortknox (2059 D)
19 Aug 09 UTC
You almost always have 2 big powers and one smaller power... the smaller power always allies with the smaller of the two bigger powers... when the ally gets close to 18, he flips sides... it's an infinite loop that guarantees no winners...
fortknox (2059 D)
19 Aug 09 UTC
I do see people winning if they meta, though... ally promises to let the big guy win if the big guy promises to let the ally win in another game...
Centurian (3257 D)
19 Aug 09 UTC
Actually fortknox, in the masters no one plays with the same person twice.

I agree btw, I'm going to treat the Masters games just like any WTA games: if I'm not going to win I'm going to draw, which is most of the time.

can the My Games section also contain finished games like it used to?
the Search feature is great, but not so great in finding ones own games that were finished.

yes I know you can get there by looking at your own profile, but its just more intuitive via the My Games tab.

Move instead of Support
Say France has fleets in Lon and EngChann, and armies in Pic and Bur. Germany has armies in Bel, Ruhr, and Mun, a fleet in No.Sea. France is trying to capture Bel with Bur-Bel. So basically it's 4 on 3 on France's favor because Mun can't support Bel while Lon (France) can cut off German support from No.Sea. What if instead of supporting, Germany moves No.Sea-Bel, Bel hold, and Ruhr-Bel? That's 3 vs. 3 and no support is cut. Can Germany keep Bel that way?

Hey guys, consider joining the new game I created. ItalyGermanyAustria vs BrtainFrance vs RussiaTurkey. Usually alliances don't last, but I made it only 5 pts so that hopefully winning won't matter, but winning while sticking to the alliance will. It may have been tried before, but oh well.
