anyone want to bet virtual money on who will advance or be demoted in the leagues. it's too early to tell definitively, but it would be fun, as long as it doesn't devolve into commenting on ongoing games or some other metagaming.

It's a silly thing to "name" one the greatest, there are at least 10 titans of thouht who could easily all claim the title of "Geatest Philosopher" but anywhoo...... it's fun. :D

So, 2 categories, Mental (ex. Kant, Descartes, Kierkegaard) and Political (Locke, Hobbes, Marx) and off we go.......

Having studied German, I can tell you the following: both Dutch and English are descended from Old Low German, which is why I can read a reasonable amount of Dutch (without being able to pronounce or reproduce it). Also, the closest language to English is Ostfriesisch (East Friesian), which is spoken by so few people as to not really matter!

I believe that Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are all also descended from Old Low German, but I cannot be sure of that. Danish is also considerably more likely to be closer to German than Dutch, simply due to locality.

Really? They're both quite adjacent to Germany, but Denmark has the added influence of being a stone's throw away from Sweden.

Might I point you to this? http://softrat.home.mindspring.com/germanic.html

So I was wrong about the Nordic languages being descended from German of any sort (this was probably why I couldn't remember in the first place!), and that English is not descended from Old Low German, but Dutch is, although they do both share a similar root.

And Holland is not adjacent to Denmark, whereas Germany is, that was my point! I know Holland borders Germany, I went there for a day trip when I was living in Gelsenkirchen!

English is considered a west germanic language. Low German is descended from Old Saxon, and it was the Saxons who invaded England in the 5th Century. I am not sure if the language of that time is referrred to as Old Saxon but certainly English and German are closely related.

but after William The Conquerer invaded England a bit of french got into the whole mix. actually, I'm not sure on this, but I think that there was a difference between Norman and French. So technically Norman got thrown into the mix. lol

@jman777 it is true that quite a bit of french vocabulary was thrown into the mix after 1066, but the grammar of English has German origins. The Normans were a only tiny proportion of the population in England. So while the nobility spoke Norman French, most of them quickly became bilingual so that they could communicate with their subjects. By about 1200 even the nobility spoke mostly English. Interestingly more French word entered the English language after the nobililty started speaking English as their main language than before (according to a TMS audio lecture series I have been listening to recently by Professor Michael Drout entitled "The History of the English Language"). French continued to be spoken as the language of governement and of court, but even the nobilty would speak English in the home.
Btw the Normans spoke Norman French which was mixture of old Norse and French. The other big influence on the English language was from the Danish invaders who ruled much of Northern England for about 150 year until shortly before the Norman conquest.

My bad, I misinterpreted your previous post. You said, "Danish is also considerably more likely to be closer to German than Dutch, simply due to locality."

I interpreted this to mean that Danish is closer to German than Dutch is closer to German, rather than Danish is closer to German than Danish is closer to Dutch. Ambiguity in the English language. =)

What a funny thread this turned out to be. On the one hand, a bunch of Dutch speakers, who (only) seem to relish having "found" each other, with the idea of starting up a Dutch-only game; then on the other hand, a flock of "Anglo's" who have some connection or other with Holland and who immediately start hair-splitting on which Germanich language might be how few percentage points closer to the other germanic language, something we Dutch NEVER ever even think, let alone discuss, about.
Like: Who cares!! All our (Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, German, English) languages are Germanic; how Germanic, and how closely they might, or might not, resemble each other is truly a moot (I think the word moot must have been invented for this point) point....

But now that we are into it, perhaps suffice it to say that I as a native Dutch-speaker (assuming I had had no foreign language training and skills - which is a giant leap of phantasy) believe that I would have understood about 65% of a discussion with an equally monolinguistic German, but only about 10 % in the case of meeting up with his Danish equivalent (or Swedish, or Finnish, or Icelandic). If a mono-linguistic Dutchman (i.e. in this case having no English skills, of which there still exist a few here and there, mostly the unedicated very elderly) would meet a mono-linguistic English speaker (of which there are of course zillions) I believe he/she would only be able to understand also about 10% of the other, and perhaps equally vice versa.

Upstart of this: From a Dutch-speakers point of view, German is by far the most closely related, and possibly this also applies the other way around.

Hence the (reprehensible!) idea of many Germans that Dutch is simply another German dialect..... (although in truth, that view is objectively speaking easily understood and when we are really honest, as Dutch speakers, there is an essence of truth in it).

Hm, dunno. I think modern Dutch and modern German are both products of older dialects. In the Middle Ages the Germanic languages reached into northern France and over the ages were pushed back north. In this 'north sea coast area' were many Germanic dialects, of which some prevailed above others. For instance, next to 'ABN' (plain Dutch) in the Northern and Eastern parts of the Netherlands are Saxon dialects, close to the dialects on the other side of the border (in Niedersachsen). Both not entirely Dutch nor German, but as well capable of understanding eachother.

Yeah, Ursa - I surely take your point, but this throws open the whole "language versus dialect" discussion, doesn't it? Perhaps it is best to study what true experts say about that, because I fear that this is one of those endless discussions without a conclusive answer. In my book, for example, Frisian is simply a dialect, although I would of course guard against ever saying that out loud when (seldom!) I am in Friesland. However, whenever I hear or read it, I find it so similar to ABN (regular Dutch) that I find the whole thing pure silliness (especially the "bilingual" roadsigns, municipality signs etc.).
