Disbanding?
This is my first game (and my first build phase) of online diplomacy. How do I disband an army to build something else?

Paused games
Is there anyway to force a player to unpause a game? I am in a game where a player paused the game over 2 weeks go as soon as it went bad for his country. HNone of his other games are paused just the one.

league bets
anyone want to bet virtual money on who will advance or be demoted in the leagues. it's too early to tell definitively, but it would be fun, as long as it doesn't devolve into commenting on ongoing games or some other metagaming.

"Greatest" Philosopher (2 Categories, See Below)
It's a silly thing to "name" one the greatest, there are at least 10 titans of thouht who could easily all claim the title of "Geatest Philosopher" but anywhoo...... it's fun. :D

So, 2 categories, Mental (ex. Kant, Descartes, Kierkegaard) and Political (Locke, Hobbes, Marx) and off we go.......

Moderation actions
Question/proposal inside.
Xapi (194 D)
06 Jul 09 UTC
I've noticed there are several (at least) moderation actions that we won't know about unless we happen to be in the game with the banned account.

Is there a reason to this?

Wouldn't it be clearer if the moderator to take an action against a user posted in the forum "Ok, I banned x, y and z for multiaccounting."?

Or, perhaps, a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly report on all moderation actions?

What do you guys (the mods, mostly) think?
dangermouse (5551 D)
06 Jul 09 UTC
When I ban someone I do generally post an announcement in the forum. I thought most others did as well, but I can put up a list of recent actions.

Banned in the past week:
ruler123, ID 15717, was banned, and had their 126 points removed and their games set to civil disorder.
gamemaster1, ID 15668, was banned, and had their 137 points removed and their games set to civil disorder.
ThomasB, ID 12525, was banned, and had their 742 points removed and their games set to civil disorder. (This user was then unbanned - effectively this took away all of his points but lets him continue playing)
Kozmo, ID 16843, was banned, and had their 94 points removed and their games set to civil disorder.

Well, perhaps you could all just decide on a system to publish things amongst yourselves.

Any system (one thread per action, weekly, monthly) is OK, but I think it would be good to have that info.
djbent (2572 D(S))

ThomasB was multi-accounting? that sucks. he is such a nice chap. i guess it's not only jerkfaces who do it.
Xapi (194 D)
06 Jul 09 UTC
All of these are for multiccounting?

And wich one/s belonged to the same person/s?
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Jul 09 UTC
I don't think ThomasB's was for multi-ing was it? I thought he had jsut decided to drop from League D1, was there more to it than that?
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))

On at least one other site, there is a separate listing of banned accounts.
The problem in this forum is that it is a rolling scroll so there is no record of prior postings after a certain length is reached.
Why not open up a section under FAQ called banned accounts and list them there in alphabetical or date order so people can see the progressions.
Then again it is like hanging out dirty laundry.

I think more interesting would be a running list of what type of actions were taken by the moderators such as:
Banned Accounts for Multi Accounting.... 387
Banned Account for misconduct.................12
Games unpaused because player dropped...3
Adjudication Error correction.........................1

Etc.
This way people have some insight into the functioning of the moderator.
djbent (2572 D(S))

@draugnar - but surely that can't be reason to take his points away?
ThomasB was not banned. He was banned and unbanned so that his league games could get a substitute. He was not multi-ing.

djbent (2572 D(S))
06 Jul 09 UTC
then why take away his points?
djbent (2572 D(S))

i'm not at all challenging the course of action, just trying to understand it, btw. =)
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Dingle was right about why ThomasB was banned. Banning takes away points so that multis don't stay on the Hall of fame, but unbanning doesn't give them back. I told Kestas how many points he had, and Kestas gave them back. So it was all an elaborate manoeuvre to make him go into CD in two games.

Although I'm all for transparency normally, I think it might just create the impression that there are more multis then there actually is.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

It might actually serve as a good 'scare' tactic :)
Chrispminis (916 D)

Does it tell the people in-game when people have been banned? I've never actually been in a game where someone was banned.

We can consider the possibility of listing banned accounts somewhere, especially now with a shared e-mail account. I really think there's got to be sufficient interest for this sort of thing, because depending on how it was done, it could be a lot of extra work.

figlesquidge (2131 D)

I don't think it's worth it. Particularly as many of the actions are more complex than a simple ban, some are worse crimes than others etc etc.
When points fines come in I would like to add a penalty game that will sit in their finished games. It would state the amount of the fine and the reason.
rlumley (0 DX)
07 Jul 09 UTC
It really wouldn't be that hard Chrisp. Get Kestas to write a section of code that reads an excel CSV file (That's basically what the entire site that I am webmaster does, lol, read excel CSVs)

Give all the mods an ftp, and let them download the excel file every time. Put in the users name, id, and a reason for ban, save it, and re-upload. Nothing simpler.

Or just write a little bit of php and use the MySQL database that already exists. I suggested recently that instead of using the current method each ban should come with a message. This message would be stored in the users comment field (they're banned - they don't need it!) and shown on the 'error: this account is banned'. Moreover, making a list of banned accounts is really really easy, just a simple SQL query. Infact, it already exists in the code, but only admins can see it.
