Live Games. What do people think of them?
I have played one live game. And by that I mean 15 minutes turns with the phase set at an hour. I had fun, but it didn't quite work out the way we would have like as three of the players went CD as soon as things didn't go perfectly their way, which I suspect is common problem.
So I think live games are a brilliant idea in principle, but hard to make work. Has anyone had a better experience? Or are there always problems like the kind I experienced?

i think it's all about getting the right group of people

i've had a few good solid games with quality folks. being selective about who joins is probably the best guarantee

That sounds reasonable. The hard part is finding the quality people at the right time. Don't get wrong there are lots of great people here, but you need seven player who are up for it just when you are able to play.
It would be great if a future version of this game would support fifteen minute phases. Then it would be so bad if someone went CD. I guess there must be some good reason why Kestas has introduced this. I am not sure what that would be though.

typo.. then it *wouldn't be so bad if someone went CD...
I have never joined a live game, because I can't estimate the length of the commitment. If everyone is active, how long does a live game normally take here?

I've played two live games, the first was brilliant but i kinda ruined it by having an argument in real life and having to leave the game early :( The other was ruined by arguments in game and a player deciding not to finalise because of said arguments. I love the idea of live games but they last too long for me i think. I'd be happier palying 2 days in a row 3 hrs at a time or something.
djbent (2572 D(S))

that sounds like a good idea. i'd be up for trying it next week. anyone else want to try? 3-4 hours two days in a row for a live game split in half?

I might go for it, but I can't play on tuesdays or fridays (We play football with my co-workers)

So if its Mon-Wed or Wed-Thu, count me in.

the first two or three live games i tried all ended early in a draw because someone flaked out and left and we couldn't afford to waste a couple hours waiting for them to go CD.

the most recent live game was great until things really started slowing down and then ground to a halt as Submariner stopped abiding to the time limit rules that he had set for the game that he organized...

At any rate, I think it is probably true that it is all about getting the right people at the right time.

All of the live games I have been in lasted between 6 and 12 hours. The shorter ones only ended because we allowed two-way victories.

I know this isn;t the season for Dr Who, (though it would be season finale right about now usually!) but as Dr Who has just come on BBC3, it got me wondering what peoplpe thought.

Live game today?
For all of us at-work Diplomaters, what about a live game today?

The crowd from yesterday's failed attempt plus a couple more might do the trick.

Fastest Game Ever, I Think
If anyone is interested in 8 hours there will be a game with one hour order phases with a buy in of 10 pts. The Name will be "Fastest Game Ever, I Think" I will post the game link in about 8 hours, but only if I get interest from at least 6 people. Please respond! I've never actually done a game like this, but I want to see if a game of Diplomacy can be finished in a day. This takes commitment and skill. Do you have what it takes?

With all this capacity running, how soon before there is a web site which allows for video conferencing in a Diplomacy game as part of the standard feature just as we now have web based text messages?

The power of making deals
I'm in a class (Dave Ramsey's "FPU"), and last night our class revolved around getting big deals and the keys to successful negotiation. I knew most of them and the rest made sense. I could make up a situation for all and demonstrate it. The wife asked me "Where'd you learn all that?" From watching the masters of Diplomacy, of course! :D

Rules Question
I thought you were able to convoy an army to attack a costal province with support from an adjacent fleet/army? Ie: Move London to Brest via Convoy. English Chanel convoy London to Brest. Mid Atlantic support London to Brest.
If you can, how do you input this move?
