Live Games. What do people think of them?
I have played one live game. And by that I mean 15 minutes turns with the phase set at an hour. I had fun, but it didn't quite work out the way we would have like as three of the players went CD as soon as things didn't go perfectly their way, which I suspect is common problem.
So I think live games are a brilliant idea in principle, but hard to make work. Has anyone had a better experience? Or are there always problems like the kind I experienced?

Best Dr Who ever?
I know this isn;t the season for Dr Who, (though it would be season finale right about now usually!) but as Dr Who has just come on BBC3, it got me wondering what peoplpe thought.

Live game today?
For all of us at-work Diplomaters, what about a live game today?

The crowd from yesterday's failed attempt plus a couple more might do the trick.

Fastest Game Ever, I Think
If anyone is interested in 8 hours there will be a game with one hour order phases with a buy in of 10 pts. The Name will be "Fastest Game Ever, I Think" I will post the game link in about 8 hours, but only if I get interest from at least 6 people. Please respond! I've never actually done a game like this, but I want to see if a game of Diplomacy can be finished in a day. This takes commitment and skill. Do you have what it takes?

Face to Face over the Net-- how soon?
With all this capacity running, how soon before there is a web site which allows for video conferencing in a Diplomacy game as part of the standard feature just as we now have web based text messages?

Xapi, I'm confused, as are others, i'm sure.

If my memory serves, the c-c-combo breaker line came from the Killer Instinct arcade games.

I played them (not too much though) around age 13-15, that's 10 years ago.

That puts Akroma in a given age bracket, around 24-30 years old.
Draugnar (0 DX)

That would explain my confusion. I haven't regularly played arcade games since the days of Asteroids and Centipede (very late 70 s and early 80s) when I was 13-15 myself. Yes, I'm 43 as has been pointed out in other threads.
Nah, lately "combo breaker" has become popular on the bazillions of forums around the 'net... it's being used by folks who don't have the slightest idea where it came from. Ya can't read too much into stuff like that these days...

Yeah, c-c-c-ombo breaker is a common meme on the internet. It may have originally come from Killer Instinct, but it's spread far enough that I didn't know where it came from until you just mentioned it now.

figlesquidge thanks, but I did read that post. I still didn' t get it though. So its a saying from a computer game... like a combo move in Tekken?
Xapi (194 D)

Killer Instinct is an arcade fighting game, like Street fighter or many others.

It had the possibility to do a 'combo', during wich, by combining different types of hits on your opponent, you could kkep on hitting for quite a long time uninterrupted.

There was, however, a certain set of moves that allowed you to break a combo when used properly. The phrase "c-c-c-combo breaker!" was heard when this happened.

It would not be difficult to make a youtube-like functionality on a site like this to replace the text chatting. As mentioned before (with timezones, web dip basically being a feature filled version of email dip), it would be more tape/view than face-to-face video conferencing.

The biggest hurdle? Bandwidth costs. Video and audio are big files to stream, and more data == higher hosting costs. It is definitely worth investigating, IMHO, as it would bring email dip and ftf dip so incredibly close.

I'm a Java architect by trade and learning adobe flex/air in my free time. That could be the best technology stack to get something like this going, but I only have so much free time (I have 3 kids).

of course, adding video means adding abuse.
Game chats would have to be monitored. You could have people trying to trade copywritten videos, or even worse (adult pay sites enticing players by having scantily clad women willing to show you X if you let them invade trieste).

Besides... the last thing I need to see is Edi's smiling face when he stabs the crap outta me ;)
Xapi (194 D)

Oh, men, djbent and Biddis would make a killing in this site if something like that happened.
Not just bandwidth costs, but storage costs would soar, too. Very gimmicky in my opinion. Plus I can read much, much faster than any video is likely to convey the same information. Also, having played F2F for many years I'm finding the online format makes it a lot easier to think of Player X as "Turkey" instead of "my buddy Dave"...

The power of making deals
I'm in a class (Dave Ramsey's "FPU"), and last night our class revolved around getting big deals and the keys to successful negotiation. I knew most of them and the rest made sense. I could make up a situation for all and demonstrate it. The wife asked me "Where'd you learn all that?" From watching the masters of Diplomacy, of course! :D

Rules Question
I thought you were able to convoy an army to attack a costal province with support from an adjacent fleet/army? Ie: Move London to Brest via Convoy. English Chanel convoy London to Brest. Mid Atlantic support London to Brest.
If you can, how do you input this move?
