Live Games. What do people think of them?
I have played one live game. And by that I mean 15 minutes turns with the phase set at an hour. I had fun, but it didn't quite work out the way we would have like as three of the players went CD as soon as things didn't go perfectly their way, which I suspect is common problem.
So I think live games are a brilliant idea in principle, but hard to make work. Has anyone had a better experience? Or are there always problems like the kind I experienced?

Best Dr Who ever?
I know this isn;t the season for Dr Who, (though it would be season finale right about now usually!) but as Dr Who has just come on BBC3, it got me wondering what peoplpe thought.

PLEASE: NO SPOILERS! We're a full year behind here in the States!

OMG. Well the episode where candidate Obama appeared as a one off assistant and saved London from the Daleks was a classic! You'll love it :)
Glorious93 (901 D)
23 Jun 09 UTC
I haven't really seen any of the old ones, but the best one I've seen is the one in 1940's London with the gas-mask people... although I think David Tennant made a better Doctor Who than Christopher Eccleston.
Glorious93 (901 D)
23 Jun 09 UTC
Oh, but the Obama one tops that of course ;) Who'd have thought he was really a cyberman?

Anything that makes something normal seem scary - 'Blink', The Library 2 parter (no spoilers for our American friends but that is a great story) - in fact, anything written by Steven Moffat.

Water is next....
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Yes, I think those two as well...
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Jun 09 UTC
Blink and the Library were on here. It was either SciFi or BBC America that showed them. I believ we are all the way through David Tenant's reign and will move into the newest Doctor next go round.

So, anyone here also hooked on Torchwood?

I watched like two episodes or Torchwood, but never really got into it.

To me, it's reminiscient of Jon Pertwee's Doctor's time of exile on Earth. I do very much enjoy it. It's much better than that Primeval which has predictable story lines and lousy FX. the only thing good about it was when the chick was in her apartment with the pet baby pteradon or whatever it is and she always strips to her bikini undies and a hyper tight t-shirt without a bra. Otherwise that show is intolerable. And I tried for the entire season. I really did. Other than a semi-naked hot chick, there was nothing memorable.
OMGNSO (415 D)
23 Jun 09 UTC
Torchwood was really weird for most of it, but very good. They played with philosophy quite intriguingly. I'm worried that killing half the cast could hurt the series a bit.

Primeval could be worth it if they get their act together for the last season, and if they've planned ahead they can use the lose ends masterly. Chance of that? Practically 0.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Jun 09 UTC
If Primeval would ever get the blond totally naked (even just a backside shot), I might jump back in and watch.
Pete U (293 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
I like Torchwood, although there have been some terribly clunky episodes. I'm quite lookign forward to the new series (5 eps in 1 week) but I'm kind disappointed that some stuff that seemed to be set up in DW hasn't been carried through (no more as it would be too spoilerish)

Primeval was cack, but not as cack as Demons (and it's been cancelled now)
Submariner (111 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
I think Primeval has been cancelled hasn't it?

@ Draugnar, fear not: We are all awaiting the final three Dr Tennant 'specials' which ome in Novemeber and at Christmas. Then the new Dr begins next year.

There is a bar in London that puts the show up 'live' as it is broadcast on the big screen. It makes for a very funny start to a Saturday night, with everyone oohing and aahing. it is also funny when someone walks into the bar who has no idea what is going on... The looks on their faces as the penny drops is always a giggle.
OMGNSO (415 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
@Pete U: Every show that sets itself up to be the "British Buffy" immediately is bullshit, especially Demons, on all levels and for all things. I think this is because the design brief for Buffy was "teenager in a horror story" but because it was done by Joss Wheden, who has a good sense of humour, it works, while the counterfeits are done by idiots who didn't bother to work out why Buffy was so popular.

I think Being Human actually makes this "New Buffy" standard, because it was originally designed along the lines of a drama, and this gives it the social complexity of Buffy, so it was brilliant.
Pete U (293 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
@OMGNSO - Being Human was indeed brilliant, but it was great at being itself. As much as I love JW's work, BH is different, and that's what counts - clones/rip-offs never work as well.

The problem with demons was the whole thing was so, so obvious and cliched, and it wasted some great actors with duff lines, prosthetics and accents. UK SF&F is never going to run to 24 eps every year, with a zillion dollar SFX budget, but we craft some little gems of genius, just genius in a different way.

Anyway, rant over :)
Pete U (293 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
I think the humour is why I like 'Chuck' too
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Jun 09 UTC
So, what do you think about Chuck knowing Judo? I loved the season (and possibly series, it's future uncertain last I heard) finale.

I wish Firefly would have had a longer run, but Serenity wrapped up the story nicely and we finally got to see River in kick-ass mode. Summer Glau does kick ass almost as good as Eliza Dushku (Faith on Buffy/Angel and Echo on Dollhouse).
jbalcorn (429 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
(I'm a year behind) Blink scared the bejeezers out of me. Why do horror films think they need to create as much gore as possible? THATs how you make horror.
jbalcorn (429 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
I'd better be sure - isn't Blink the episode with the angel statues?
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Yep, that's it. Incredibly effective thriller worthy of an Emmy here in the states. Do they give BAFTAs to TV shows in the UK?

Blink was good. wish the last girl in the eatser special would become the new companion, she had balls(in a good way)but its not to be , oh well

moving away from doc who to american scifi, superhero driven fanatsy tv shows i find that i need to impressed with the girl to live through the corny storylines.
Dark Angel in that regards was perfect, anti goverment undertones(yo chuck D!) mixed in with good quality effects and budget and totally hot chick - jessica alba(also loved the black lesbian, slacker dudes, left wing anti gov underground boyfriend)
firefly was so well written compared to most of the drivel on tv, and actually funny!
Pete U (293 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Draugnar - I'm watching Chuck at UK pace - I'm 3 eps into Series 2 on Virgin1. No spoilers please...

But, there is a series 3 - yay (We need smileys so i can demonstrate my true joy here)

Ouch, sorry Pete. I forget that you folks on the other side of the pond have the same issues with American shows that we have with British series.

LOL, Pete. Well, if you've been reading any of the comments on zachary-levi.com, then you already know way more than one little thing I mentioned. It could have been worse.

You do have us fans in the US to thank though. NBC was going to cancel Chuck but we had a "vote with your wallet" campaign where the diehard fans had Subway every Monday night while we watched Chuck, and we made it clear to the folks at NBC, our local Subway managers, and the upper management at Subway we were doing this. The respone was HUGE and so they decided another season was in order after all.

So, how far have you gotten so I know what is safe to discuss?

Oh, and Episode 5 of Season 2... Best use of a song EVER! But that isn't a spoiler.
Pete U (293 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
I get my spoilers from a magazine called SFX. With something like Chuck we are so far behind (Ep 3 of Se 2 aired on Tuesday night) that I can read them, and then forget by the time I see the episode.

24 & Heroes are the only 'genre' shows that we are pretty close to, as well as ER/Desperate Housewives. Some we will wait months for, and some never get picked up.

Now, if you guys can get 'Firefly', 'Pushing Daisies' & 'Dead Like Me' re-commissioned, I'd think about a thank you :)
Pete U (293 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Draug - is the song better than 'Hopelessly Devoted To You' in Pushing Daisies?
Pete U (293 D)
25 Jun 09 UTC
Thanks for the link, by my Sky+ still has 4 eps of 24, 13 of Heroes and whatever I'm recording today - internet TV I don't have time for :(
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Jun 09 UTC
It's a different use (if I recall Kristen Chenowyth sung that herself) but I'll clarify. Best use of a callic/hard rock song EVER! Too bad Pushing Daisies got cancelled. It was a great show to and provided a nice "romantic" contrast to Chuck.

Dead like me was a surprisingly good show. Maybe not suprising - Mandy Patinkin is a great actor. but when he got Criminal Minds, DLM was done for.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Absolutely, it was a good show. Too bad, like it's lead character, it died when it was still young.

Christopher Ecclestone left so he couldnt be type cast...

He has subsequently simply never been cast in anything again ever... Will the curse of leaving the new Doctor strike David tennant?
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Jun 09 UTC
Um, Ecclestone is very much alive and acting. Besides 'Heroes' (a US smash hit on TV), in which he played an 'invisible' man named Claude (obvious reference to Claude Raines, the original Invivsible Man). He is playing Destro in the new live-action GI: Joe movie.

The power of making deals
I'm in a class (Dave Ramsey's "FPU"), and last night our class revolved around getting big deals and the keys to successful negotiation. I knew most of them and the rest made sense. I could make up a situation for all and demonstrate it. The wife asked me "Where'd you learn all that?" From watching the masters of Diplomacy, of course! :D
