Nazis and Hitler: Go
Please get out all arguments of Nazis and Hilter here. Talk about how they relate to the world climate crisis, or HIV, or moon-units, or why you decided to but Burger King instead of McDonald's last night. Whatever. Use them now and get them out of your system! This topic is for you!

Is it wrong to stab an ally?
In game 6591 I took 4 supply centers of my ally to win the game and now he is complaining that I have screwed him. I did, but is that wrong?

Most difficult long term alliances?
I'm curious which two-way alliances people think are the hardest to maintain long term. They either don't offer enough room for expansion or require that extra bit of trust that's so hard to establish or whatever.

For me the most difficult to maintain seems to be the Italian-Turkish alliance; followed closely by a German-English alliance.

I've always found France-England as the hardest. I think this is because England is always building new units directly behind France, and as they have to be convoyed away, it is easy to make quite a noticeable stab as all you have to do is convoy to a territory a few further along. For the same reason, I can't think of any successful Austria-Turkey alliances in 'real' games. Having said that, in team games these are among the most powerful alliances, for the simple reason that holding a corner requires you to guard against 2 fewer fronts.
My favourite to play was Austria-Russia, because if well managed it can be extremely potent, and the buffer zone between nations is just about large enough. Having said that, you do need to take down Turkey rather quickly, or you end up with your units stuck in the corner when the rest of the map turns on you!

Austria-Turkey is easier to maintain than many think. I was the Austria in one that cleared the continent (England was still standing). They have a big disadvantage in not being able to get fleets to the north though.

The most uneasy relationship is either I/T or the Germany and Russia. Although at first glance they only really fight over Sweden. If either of them come out of their spheres in a two person alliance they will obliged to attack the other almost every time.
Italy and Austria alliances, although almost necessary in the early game, stab eachother often. Also any alliance with England and one of his neighbours. Turkey likes to stab Russia if they form juggernaughts. Austria likes to stab Russia after a couple of years.

Basically, the only real secure alliance of neighbours is Germany and France. Its just too easy to stalemate their borders. Germany and Austria maybe too.

Italy-Turkey isn't hard, if there's a lot of mutual faith between the leaders of those countries. I've much enjoyed this game of mine:

Ah yes, but with "a lot of mutual faith between the leaders" any alliance can be made secure - what matters is the ones that can still work when that trust is gone!

I just read my post over and I basically said that Russia can make no secure alliances.

Russia-France or Russia-Italy can both be very effective, although each requires both players to have assistance in the early game.

Germany/England? What's hard about that?

Ahh yes. Correct. Nevermind. I was just thinking about Russias neighbours

Well England sort of encircles Germany and builds behind him.

I don't think any long term alliance can still work when the trust is gone :)

As long as England and Germany are not complete idiots (admittedly a big "if"), why not?

The problem with the standard German-English alliance is as Centurian says, England usually ends up circling around Germany both through Scandanavia and France. Germany will have too many SD bordering N. Sea and England often won't agree to make it a DMZ. The best chance for success is having England only go one direction either France or Russia.

i find france with england to be a difficult alliance. eastern alliances just seem easier to keep, more secure and have less reasons to break. germany and england being a close second.

The subject is very self explanatory, though I have tried playing diplomacy with friends I have never been successful and now I want to try it without the biases that come with knowing your opponent before hand. So, anyone one up for a nice simple game of 25 point buy in?

If the Seven Star Trek Captains played php, who would win?
Simple premise: if the Seven captains in Trek were to sit down and play a game, who would win? Th first five captains are obvious: Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, and Archer, the captains from the different series. The other two became captains, and were 1st officers: Spock and Riker.

Ending Games
Is it possible to end games were there is an effective stalemate or all players have grown tired of a particular game? In a scenario with 3 players left with 14, 12 and 8 supply points respectively in a PPSC game, where a draw was called, how would the points be divided?

Alias Usernames To Keep Games Independent
When a player enters a game, there may be players who know him from previous games. Or they may check his previous games for whether he is a reliable ally or a stabber. I believe this is counter-productive to the idea of having each game stand on its own. Metagaming, or negotiating between games, is frowned upon. Using prior history should be viewed as having an equally negative effect on having a free-standing and independent game.
