Is there ever a reason to wait to build?
The only thing I can think of is something where the only SC they can build at is a DMZ. Anything else?

I need to find a replacement to play the last three games of this group. I did find one, but because the thread has shot off the bottom, with me being a muppet and not noting down the email, it is lost to me.

Unattended retreat ?
What happens if a unit is dislodged and the player misses the retreat phase? Will the adjuicator disband the unit or retreat it? (The reason I ask is I'm playing in a Retreats Disband variant.)

Another rules query
I know that when a unit (A) attacks another (B) it cuts any support that B is offering, whether to a move or a hold. Is this still the case if A is attacked from elsewhere? Does it make any difference if A is dislodged by the attack?

Notice
I decided to start using my real name(Sioraf as Killeens) when playing here and since I can't rename the CJ 92 account I am going to finish the games CJ 92 is in with the CJ 92 account and then let it get removed from the site or whatever then use only the Sioraf as Killeens account. I think this is fair because I have never used both accunts in the same game.

Probably not the most appropriate place to be posting this, but are there any hockey fans out there? If so who's your favourite team? Just interesting to find out who pays attention to it around the world...

I have question for are European friends and other persons living in nations that are more open with alcohol "for human consumption". Paticularly age limits. The U.S. as you know has long history of proabition and that has caused more harm than good. Is alcoholism, drunk driving and etc as much a problem there as it is here?

Attention! All games where someone has gone into CD with 0 supply centres report in!
Lets imagine it... your in the middle of an exciting game and you've technically just eliminated someone, but they are too chicken to finalize that last retreat or destroy order. These games are free to take over, so im on a personal mission to take over these unwanted positions and finalize that final order. I know this will add to my number of losses (will it?), but im feeling nice and everyone wants these games to move on.

More Advanced Key Gameplay Tips?
To all those experienced php players out there:
I feel that after about 4 months of being involved in Diplomacy in some way shape or form, I have learned most if not all of the basic aspects of game-play.

I would appreciate any more intricate or advanced gaming tips that anyone who has been playing for a long time might have for me. I am very eager to learn how to become a much better Diplomacy player now that I have some experience and a sound basic understanding of the game under my belt.

Also, please feel free to review my finished games and tell me where things might have gone wrong or did go ill for me, and things I could have done differently to avoid the problems that I faced. I know you can't get a full story of those games without also seeing the messages that were written between other countries and I, but if there's something obvious that I could have done, regardless of conversations with other countries that may have been involved, I am open and eager to learn ways that I may have done things differently.

All your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated and I shall continue to strive to play fairly and competitively in any and all games that I am currently involved in or that I will be involved in sometime in the future :).

Forever a colleague on the game-board to all of you wonderful people,

General Ireland :)
Also, any advanced gaming tips that would apply to all people reading this thread would be excellent, as I do not want to be selfish with information from esteemed sources :).

It's THE best. No other site offers as complete data about Diplomacy strategies and tactics.

its true. The articles are great.

mostly, advanced gameplay is all about getting better at negotiations. various articles allude and discuss different strategies in negotiations.

a few things I have noticed:
Stating specific moves and giving the reasons for them builds/grants greater credibility to your claims.

for instance: "Im moving north" is less believable (because of the ambiguity) than "Im moving silesia to prussia and bohemia to silesia"

Getting good at reading positions and builds makes negotiations easier. knowing that germany in the baltic means he is concerned about russia tells you a lot about how to approach negotiations with him.

the last bit i'll note is clever moves with allies. Finding ways to keep allies honest without threatening them and protecting yourself from stabs is difficult. One great example is the italian-austrian alliance using "trieste-venice" and "Venice - trieste" as a means of staying honest.
thanks for the tips everyone, keep them coming :).

Get really good at guessing what other peoples' orders are. Every turn, write orders for everybody. If you're right or wrong, figure out why. This develops tactical understanding and strategic sensibility; you see problems earlier, know bad advice when you hear it, etc.

keep talking to EVERYONE. If you want to set up your end-game, you've gotta think about more than just grabbing that next SC

There are several places to go to read up on the hobby:
www.diplom.org check the zine as well as the resource section
http://www.diplomacyworld.net/ Also a zine as well as a depository of lots of articles in the past.
There are some good articles on the Avalon Hill site which I do not have here at the moment.

The real question is what do you want to learn specifically?
Openings,
Psychology
Strategic
Tactics
Philosophy of play
techniques to learn better tactics/vision/strategy

it is a big area, take one and NOT all of the above and work it.
Openings I think I'm ok on, as I had a friend of mine also on this site sit down and explain it to me with a board, but I do, however need to learn techniques to learn better tactics/vision/strategy. Any suggestions Edi? And/or anyone else?

I really like the idea of writing down orders of other players and then comparing them to actual orders in the game. Great tip wugdiet :). Also, the aforementioned friend has stressed to me the importance of talking to everyone in a game, thanks for reinforcing that lesson El_Perro_Artero.

To everyone else I have not mention, thanks for your time and advice, I'm sure it will go a long way in allowing me to develop into a better player :).
*have not mentioned
Any more tips would be more than welcome.

@wugdiet: it's much easier if you know game theory.

I have always suggested that people play the Escalation Variant with their friends one on one or with three people. This is the way that I learned tactics quickly in January 1966. It forces you to learn the board, and the process forces you to think ahead and learn whether you like it or not, the relation of important things in the tactical game and gives you a total board vision.

I will post the rules which are really a short few paragraphs with its own heading.

aoe3rules: You have trees and cross-tabbed pay-off matrices for everything?
I think that developing a tactical understanding of people's orders requires practice by trial and error such as what wugdiet suggested. So I believe that the knowledge of game theory could be acquired through such methods. Keep the great suggestions and constructive criticism coming guys :)!!

sorry, wrong link...
I actually went to the Avalon hills site and looked at the rules for escalation, and also had time to go over all of Edi's articles there. I must say that they were very well written and very informative. Kudos to Edi Birsan.

P.S. Nice to finally put a face to the legendary name Edi!
I also believe that I have played the escalation variant with some friends of mine. Any chance that we could get that variant going on php?

Is the 1.0 version of PHP almost completed? This site seems pretty close to a 1.0 version. What plans are in the near future of upgrades to get to that 1.0 status?
