Does Empire4 (Fall of the American Empire) need to be balanced?
Unless most other Diplomacy maps, Empire4 is not very balanced and a few nations have severe disadvantages that make it very difficult for them to win while others are fairly overpowered. I can explain more if someone wants to ask.

Rival/hatred game variant
I'd like to play a game mode where each player is secretly given a unique rival (so no two players share a rival), and the only players counted at the end of the draw are those who have both survived and eliminated their rival. A solo doesn't need to eliminate their rival and rivals aren't necessarily symmetrical.

Unknown Player in Anonymous Private Game
I'm completely new to Diplomacy and this website. I made a private game and explained to my friends how to join my private match. Though only 2 people say they've joined, I have 3 anonymous players other than myself registered. Is it possible one of them joined twice? I know by the time stamps that it was one of the first two players who joined the game, the times are only a minute apart, and I am wondering if the small time frame is just a player joining twice.

Hugh Hefner dies at age 91. A controversial character, extremely successful businessman, championed some Liberal causes, gay rights, marriage equality, Native American rights, gave many authors a break, eg Alex Haley, but also it has to be said, contributed to the objectification of women and exploited women for financial gain.

German opening strategy
What are your thoughts on German opening strategy? Apart from the west, how do you try to manipulate the eastern sphere?
Condescension (10 D)

My general thought here is that your ideal alliance is with France, because you are less likely to be stabbed by F than E in the midgame and have more recourse if they do.

I think trying to get England to open anti-Russia (perhaps by faking a WT with France) while inciting a Jugg vs Lepanto is the best way to both keep Austria strong but slow the East.

My preference is EG over FG, because it lets you cross the line against Russia and Austria much more quickly (if you play it correctly) and you tend to build less fleets that way, which aids your expansion prospects significantly.

In an FG, Russia usually makes gains too (Norway for certain) and you have no ally to aid you in Scandinavia for a long time. In my experience that's much worse for Germany than anything they experience in the EG, because in the EG wherever they are fighting, their ally will be there to help.

Of course, both are preferable to facing an EF.

In the East, a fragile AT is the best alliance to be up against, imo. It allows you to use my all-time favourite strategy - offer to disband Russia's northern fleet in Sweden in S02 and then back out in F02, and tell them that if he does this, the EG will leave him Swe and StP to allow him to fight down south.

Of course, you don't leave him Swe and StP. You take Swe and England walks into StP, and the entire Russian front is dismantled by 03.

The 'fragile' bit is important. You need to try to convince Turkey to swap to IT later on, to keep the East in disarray and let you keep rolling. However, most ATs are naturally fragile so this usually isn't hard to achieve.
Condescension (10 D)

Good thoughts. I doubt you have a very high success rate at getting an AT to form though, lol. What arguments do you use on E to get him to EG? As E I tend to pursue a WT.

Germany tends to do well if Austria does well. Therefore, you at least want a balance in the east. England is a huge strategic threat to Germany, even worse of a threat than Russia. The good part is that France is a major threat long term to England so it may not take much encouragement to get him into the Channel. Defer Bel and use it to foment F vs. E squabbling. I tend to look north to centers in Scandanavia before F, E, or R centers. Finally, if diplomatically possible, Germany needs to put a fleet into Baltic early.
Strategically, I like a Central Powers Alliance masked as a Western Triple and a Lepanto. It forces Russia and Turkey into a Juggernaut on the defensive. Russia is looking at English fleets in the north and Turkey is looking at Italian fleets and Austrian armies in the east. Austria and Germany can ignore each other and look like nothing more than friendly neutrals. The big snag is finding a way to keep France from getting a huge jump into Italy. Keep England as your "primary" ally in the WT, so that he will help you against France if possible. If you can keep France at five or six sc's until Turkey is neutralized then the CPA becomes the dominant alliance on the board, especially if Germany has Warsaw and England has St. Pete. Once England is in St. Pete (if he builds too many fleets which you should encourage) he usually has trouble getting to Moscow, so he either has to stab you or France.

Tell Russia you will let him into Swe as long as Moscow goes south. Move your fleet to Den then Ska and put an army into Den. You keep your word and let Rus into Sweden. Build a fleet. Then in 1902 you promptly kick him out of Swe, cover Baltic with your new fleet, and hopefully have England take/pressure StP also. Now Rus is relegated to the southern sphere. He sent 3 units down there already anyway so there should be plenty happening but I'm not sure it matters which alliance comes out on top. Russia will probably be the lesser part of an alliance if it survives so just see what pans out and go from there.
I strongly think your best chance at a win is to ally England against both Russia and France, then once they are too damaged to be a threat to you, backstab England.

Germany does not need to see France or Russia eliminated to get a solo win; in fact it's probably better if they're half alive.

You have a very small chance of winning if you let France eliminate England; in fact, your chances of losing are pretty high.

I haven't had the pleasure of playing Germany in quite sometime but I prefer trying to get England to attack France early and then siding with a weakened France. That way they both get bogged down in the western sea zones and you're able to hopefully take more out of England than France can. Combine this with a solid friend in Austria and a Russia dedicating to a slog in the south and you're pretty well set for a comfortable game. A couple wild cards to keep in check would be Italy and Turkey. You need an IA vs RT in the south to slow the other players down properly enough for you to establish your power in the west. Killing England and then moving on France (who if played right you can have out positioned via your new SCs in England) then swooping east/south to secure the win just as IA (preferably Italy, in my opinion they're able to do less to stop your solo than Austria) begins to make some headway and move their front lines away from you. If you can do these things a solo is likely however it's unlikely that if you're playing with anyone skilled that they won't notice your dangerous amount of success. Unfortunately Germany isn't like England where the map plays in favor of them to hide their strength (in my opinion England can build a large amount of power in very dense part of the map and in face-to-face games it's easy for players to lose track of how strong they're getting) , but that's just my take on Germany. Each game is unique and the diplomacy in that first turn is better at telling you how to play the opening than any of us.

I'm hopeless with Germany. One simple question.. Is it a good idea to bounce Russia in sweden in Autumn 01, or not a good idea ? Naturally it depends on individual players, but I'm thinking that it's better to do a deal with Russia, let him have Sweden, because that prevents England from "being too strong too early". There seems to be a view that it's not good for Germany if France successfully invades England, so maybe Russia is a better partner to help knock out England.
If you're looking for hard and fast strategic rules, diplomacy may not be for you. It very much depends on the Russian player, but also the rest of the board situation.
That said, here's a few questions I keep in mind which helps me decide what I want to do: Is Russia going to get strong enough to be an early threat if I let him in? Is Russia going to collapse too fast in the east if I don't? Is my alliance and diplomatic standing strong enough that I can risk having an angry Russia? Do I need a friend in the short term over potentially having too strong à neighbour later on? Is there something I'm leveraging Sweden over diplomatically?
I think the key to answering this correctly is - what SC's do you imagine Germany having with a German solo? Work backward from there. Personally, Germany needs the Austrian and Russian home SC's to solo - at least in my mind. Work that into your mid-game, and the early game strategies will naturally follow
If either England or France moves to English channel, you can bounce Russia out of Sweden. If Russia gets into Galicia, you can bounce Russia out of Sweden. If Italy attacks Austria, you can bounce Russia out of Sweden.

If France and England are at peace, Italy and Austria are at peace, and Russia got bounced out of Galicia, you should consider letting Russia into Sweden.

To influence the East I really like Army Munich-Silesia (F KIE-DEN/HOL, A BER-KIE) because it can 1) defend Silesia, and thus Munich and Berlin, from a Russian attack, 2) intervene on Austria's behalf by influencing Galicia or jumping at Warsaw and 3) being able to protect Munich from Franch/Italian treachery as a bonus! You give up on Belgium, but that's pretty much the only major weakness.

Miles better than Army Berlin Hold!

@MajorMitchell, in my opinion you should bounce Russia if he is looking good in the south. But if he is being attacked heavily in the south then by all means let him have Sweden so he can slow Turkey down.

[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).

FFS WHY?
Why does online Diplomacy give me Germany to start with in every single game I sign up for?
Seriously, does it use region-based IP-checking? Because I'd really like to try out different countries and strategies.
And no, taking over Leavers doesn't count because you always get a losing position way past the point of getting a proper strategy rolled out (that's why the original player threw the game)
