Does Empire4 (Fall of the American Empire) need to be balanced?
Unless most other Diplomacy maps, Empire4 is not very balanced and a few nations have severe disadvantages that make it very difficult for them to win while others are fairly overpowered. I can explain more if someone wants to ask.

Rival/hatred game variant
I'd like to play a game mode where each player is secretly given a unique rival (so no two players share a rival), and the only players counted at the end of the draw are those who have both survived and eliminated their rival. A solo doesn't need to eliminate their rival and rivals aren't necessarily symmetrical.

Unknown Player in Anonymous Private Game
I'm completely new to Diplomacy and this website. I made a private game and explained to my friends how to join my private match. Though only 2 people say they've joined, I have 3 anonymous players other than myself registered. Is it possible one of them joined twice? I know by the time stamps that it was one of the first two players who joined the game, the times are only a minute apart, and I am wondering if the small time frame is just a player joining twice.

I figured if I switched my allegiance i'd definitely be a target and I wanted more time to figure out your partner. Was pretty certain it was snowy and had no idea guak was scum. nice job guys.

Good game all. Disappointing that it turned out the way it did but the energy, if there was any left, just absolutely died, and that only plays into scum's favor. I suppose some of yall have figured out that not caring lets you live longer than caring and that is really unfair to people like me that actually give it effort. If you can't tell from this game that giving effort works and not giving effort doesn't, please just stop playing.

Dear Town: I gave you 2 scum and 2 town cleasr as I was NKed. You squandered it. Next time a cop dies, just follow the direction and watch who protests the most as you lynch scum.
Amen OB

OB, you only had two scans. You happened to be right this time, but being cop doesn't make that more likely in general.

Byron, that kinda sounds like BS, and honestly I hope it is, cause hiding your reads is pretty much never a good play as (effectively) VT.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))

I felt that if I came out when i did i'd get NK before being able to really swing anything; and I wasn't completely sold on who else was scum. (I thought snowy was most likely at the moment, but after i read you as scum I started to doubt snowy more and more.) My plan was to get through night into the next day and then announce my read of you as scum. I just felt with my favor of you throughout the game announcing against you would have held more weight than others and I probably could've forced your wagon. However, I also ran the risk of you and your partner pushing the town to think i was scum making a play. In that case I would get lynched and use my hunter ability to take you with me. It was a much safer play than announcing my read of you right before a night phase. Because i think I would've been guaranteed the NK at that point. I even tried to elude to my read of you hoping a town would read it. (read my defense of you to kench)
Hope you play again Byron, you have interesting takes and you'll get better at reading these folks the more you interact with them. I only spotted guak right because he was acting so different than last game for instance. In general, it is probably better to just honestly put out your arguments when you're VT, even if you get killed, your opinions should get taken more seriously after you flip town, even though it didn't happen this game.

Next game I'm really going to focus on rereading dead townies to see who they read, while they aren't going to be right all the time, they're more likely to be right than even the most townclear alive townies because 1) no one is truly ever town clear until they flip and 2) scum killed that person for a reason, likely because one of their scum reads was right. Even if the reads are wrong, operating like this and having scum know we'll look at the reads of dead townies makes them have to give a second thought to killing our valuable analyzers because if they have real scum in their reads they'll have to worry we'll catch them because of that. The only way to counteract this for scum is to kill townies who are wrong about their scum reads, which gives town an advantage because we'll have more townies pushing the right targets still. I think looking at or listening to dead townies is one of the major points where this game could have turned in favor of town, but didn't.

Kench (1274 D)

Well I'm sorry it ended the way it did, but fair play to the scum team - killing off their own ND and Rivera at the right time probably swung it for them. For my own part I wish I'd stuck with my gut more often, but I rarely knew how best to justify it. Was also regularly swung by more experienced people suggesting that my thoughts were nonsense, when in reality I think they were sometimes pretty sound (except that conspiracy theory on Bo - #awks).

For the most part, I learned that I really don't have the time to offer to a game like this. So I'm glad I played and I apologise if I caused the game to suck by not being able to give it the time it required - that's something you only learn by playing and I honestly gave what time I could. Thanks for an enjoyable first (and, I think, last) Mafia game!

@OB: if you had split your two reads to make them very clear (or if you had outed yourself instead of going along with the bozo lynch) it would had been a very different game. You made it easier on us for sure.

@snowy: you had never played with scum me so you didn't know my meta. I was in fact being obvious on purpose because in the past my scum play has been anything but obvious. No one here would had expected me to defend scum ND if I was scum.
OB_Gyn_Kenobi (888 D)

I don't think having one scum scan and one inno scan is a trove of info that justifies outing as cop. Admittedly I miscalculated the chances that scum had picked up that I was cop. I thought I would have another day, esp b/c the doc was out and I thought he would be the obv NK the night I was killed. I had planned to scan guak the night I was killed, but then he invited the cop scan, which made me think he was going to lawyer up. It also cemented my read of him as scum. The point I was making to town was that after I died, I posted two scum reads and they both probably should have been lynched, even tho one was a scan result and the other merely a read. What difference would it have made if the scum read was wrong compared to lynching any other townie? It would have been a 100% town-led lynch.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Couldn't we say the same thing about every townie that dies?
OB_Gyn_Kenobi (888 D)
02 Oct 17 UTC
But some town players get led to the gallows, or at least escorted there, by scum.
ghug (5068 D(B))
02 Oct 17 UTC
And some don't.

You were killed because you were the cop, which makes your other reads less relevant to your being nightkilled, which actually makes them less valuable than those of a VT that gets nightkilled.
OB_Gyn_Kenobi (888 D)
03 Oct 17 UTC
WTF are you babbling about?
ghug (5068 D(B))
03 Oct 17 UTC
The fact that you were cop doesn't make your reads inherently more valuable.

You clearly scanned two people, and they were treated as such. If someone argued to kill every NKed townie's scumreads, you'd rightfully call them an idiot.
OB_Gyn_Kenobi (888 D)
03 Oct 17 UTC
But they weren't some dipshit townie's reads, they were mine. And therefore warrant a great deal more credibility.
Yeah Ghug, even if OB didn't scan all of them, you killed him because he was too right, so much so you thought he was cop as scum, we should have pressed his scum reads 100%.
OB_Gyn_Kenobi (888 D)
03 Oct 17 UTC
Think about this too ghug, I knew for sure who one scum member was after N1, and that information educated my other scum reads. I saw interactions between various players and known mafia. A cops reads are not equivalent to a VT's reads.
ghug (5068 D(B))
03 Oct 17 UTC
@Spirit, We killed him because he'd very clearly scanned ND and MM. The guak read was completely unimportant.

@OB, going back and looking for those connections is prudent. Blindly lynching your reads is not.
OB_Gyn_Kenobi (888 D)
03 Oct 17 UTC
That's my fucking point. It seems no one did the looking back. I said "follow the direction", as in, I directed the town to look at the connections between ND and guak. And then I.was witnessing guak's subsequent fatuous attempt to pull the lynch away from ND astonished me that guak didn't hang next.
guak (3381 D)
03 Oct 17 UTC
@OB: I would had never defended ND in that situation as scum. Everyone knows that which is exactly why I did it. It was a bluff because everyone thinks my scum meta is to bus hard. I never expected anyone to lynch Tom over ND. The whole point of my charade was to fool town. It worked. Why is that so surprising? There was no connection at all between me and ND before that day. Who would believe mafia would try to defend one of their own from a guilty cop scan? Also, you having made clear your reads would not had allowed me to play that charade. You basically gave me grounds to mount a fake defense. And outing with a guilty scan is the correct move as cop. You allow an engaged town to have an early mafia kill and a town clear. You also set up a game of chicken for the NK that could result in more doctor saves. Trying to be the hero as cop ends up poorly more often than not because it is really hard to continue to hide that your reads are spot on the more scans you have.
snowy801 (591 D)
03 Oct 17 UTC
First of all outing with one correct scum scan is a horrible move and anyone who even slightly suggested it should be ashamed of themselves

Secondly OB your reads don't mean shit if they're not backed by a scan. Monkeys and typewriters.

Hugh Hefner dies at age 91. A controversial character, extremely successful businessman, championed some Liberal causes, gay rights, marriage equality, Native American rights, gave many authors a break, eg Alex Haley, but also it has to be said, contributed to the objectification of women and exploited women for financial gain.

[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).

Why does online Diplomacy give me Germany to start with in every single game I sign up for?
Seriously, does it use region-based IP-checking? Because I'd really like to try out different countries and strategies.
And no, taking over Leavers doesn't count because you always get a losing position way past the point of getting a proper strategy rolled out (that's why the original player threw the game)
