Rival/hatred game variant
I'd like to play a game mode where each player is secretly given a unique rival (so no two players share a rival), and the only players counted at the end of the draw are those who have both survived and eliminated their rival. A solo doesn't need to eliminate their rival and rivals aren't necessarily symmetrical.

Unknown Player in Anonymous Private Game
I'm completely new to Diplomacy and this website. I made a private game and explained to my friends how to join my private match. Though only 2 people say they've joined, I have 3 anonymous players other than myself registered. Is it possible one of them joined twice? I know by the time stamps that it was one of the first two players who joined the game, the times are only a minute apart, and I am wondering if the small time frame is just a player joining twice.

[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).

And no, taking over Leavers doesn't count because you always get a losing position way past the point of getting a proper strategy rolled out (that's why the original player threw the game)

How was this tournament set up? was it double elimination or something else?
captainmeme (1632 DMod)
08 Aug 17 UTC
(+4)
The 1v1 Showdown began in early January 2017, and with 110 players signing up to participate, it's the largest tournament WebDiplomacy has ever held. There are also huge prizes on the line - the total prize pool is 3500 D, with 1500 of those going to the overall victor.

Attaining any of those points is no mean feat, though. Only the top 16 finishers get anything at all, so to even get the minimum prize of 50 D, players had to outlast at least 94 of their fellow competitors.

The Tournament is Double-Elimination, meaning that if you are defeated once, you drop to the Loser's Bracket, where you are able to fight on. If you are defeated in the Loser's Bracket, you are eliminated from the tournament. As stated in the header, 11 players now remain, but 9 of them are fighting for survival in the Loser's Bracket - just 2 remain undefeated, and those two are facing off in the SemiFinals right now.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHTS - WINNER'S BRACKET, SEMIFINAL

Since France vs Austria was introduced to webDiplomacy, XORXES has been absolutely dominating the 1v1 scene - he has held the #1 spot in 1v1 Elo since taking it from Ezio in March, and his tournament performance absolutely reflects that.

After losing a match in Round 2 to mscott, he came back and decisively won the tiebreaker, and since then has lost no other games - facing off webDiplomacy legends Genghiz and Yonni without stumbling. Currently the favourite to not only win the 1v1 Showdown, but also the 1v1 Champions League, he is very much the player to beat in this set.

MERCY, on the other hand, has very much been the dark horse of the tournament. Due to his initial #78 seeding, he's faced incredibly tough competition right from the start, and nobody expected the run of victories he's managed to maintain. While his road to the semis has not been anywhere near as flawless as Xorxes', having gone to tiebreakers in all but one of his sets, he's consistently pulled victories against high ranking players, knocking out the #6 and #14 seeds as well as defeating SantaClausowitz, the player who knocked site #1 SplitDiplomat into the Loser's Bracket.

In every set he's played, Mercy has come in as the underdog, yet he's pulled off a win every single time. Could Mercy continue this run and be the David to Xorxes' Goliath? We'll have to wait and see...

08 Aug 17 UTC
@Ticonderoga - The tournament is indeed Double Elimination, so the winner of this set has not yet won the tournament - but they do get two 'lives', as it were, in the finals, as you must be defeated twice to be eliminated. The winner of this set is also guaranteed at least second place, which comes a 600 D prize - but of course they'll be aiming for first and the 1500 D, along with the title of 1v1 Showdown Champion.

I think its a testament to meme's dedication that this tournament has gone so smoothly. I've seen plenty of tournaments go to shit because of sloppy work or laziness by the tournament director. The fact that a tourney of this size has gone through without so much as a hiccup is quite the feat.

Yeah, he beat me on a couple of enormous guesses. I tend to go for high-risk, high-reward scenarios. And it was unique because I didn't really have any of his previous game history to base my guesses off of, because none of y'all ever threatened his home SC's
Best of luck to him against xorxes though. He'll need it.

I've spoken about the two players fighting it out in the Winner's Bracket - but what of the other side of the coin? 4 huge name players were eliminated in Losers' Bracket Round 7 - Josemurc, dagabs0, rdrivera2005 and peterwiggin - and finish their tournaments runs in joint 13th place, just about making the cutoff for prizes. 4 more players eliminated in Round 8 will join them in that prize tier, while 4 others will get one step closer to the finals.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHTS - LOSERS' BRACKET ROUND 8

In fact, one of these Round 8 sets has already been concluded.

Set #207 - BALKI BARTOKOMOUS vs SPLITDIPLOMAT

gameID=200820
gameID=200822
gameID=201153 (Tiebreak)

At the beginning of this tournament, both SplitDiplomat and Balki Bartokomous were Diplomacy Kings, with SplitDiplomat in the #1 spot in the webDiplomacy rankings and Balki Bartokomous at #1 over on PlayDiplomacy. Although both have since been dethroned (by the same player!), it was truly a clash of the titans as SplitDiplomat took the victory in the tiebreaker match. Split is now waiting to find out who his next opponent will be - and whichever player wins set #208, it's going to be a tough matchup.

SET #208 - GHUG vs DJANTANI

(Games are currently being set up - GameIDs will be posted when they begin)

While Balki Bartokomous and VillageIdiot have been fighting for the #1 spot in Full Press on PlayDip, Djantani is undisputably PlayDiplomacy's top Gunboat player, and that skill transitioned well onto the France vs Austria map. He's currently ranked at #15 in 1v1 Elo on webDip, and has previous been in the top 3.

After knocking early favourite Peregrine Falcon out of the Winner's Bracket in Round 3, he met his match against Genghiz, but quickly regained his footing and defeated both VashtaNeurotic and peterwiggin 2-0 in the Losers' Bracket. He'll be looking to continue that run against Ghug - but it's not going to be easy.

While Djantani excels in gunboat, Ghug is well known for his exceptional Full Press play. While he's recently dropped off Ghost Ratings due to his inactivity in ranked games, he ranked in at #6 in Full Press and #12 overall back in April, and he also successfully managed to transfer his skills across from the Standard variant to the 1v1 scene. After an undefeated run of 8 games, Mercy pulled off a huge upset in Round 5, knocking him down to the Losers' Bracket, where he's been waiting for an opponent ever since. The big question here - will he be able to avoid the fate of fellow top Full Press player peterwiggin? Or will the PlayDip gunboater send him crashing out too?

SET #205 - FLUMINATOR vs THORONDORNL

gameID=204146
gameID=204147

While the Showdown was open to players from all sites, the vast majority of signups came from webDiplomacy and vDiplomacy - just 5 of the 110 who started out originated from PlayDiplomacy, and two of those players were eliminated in the second round. The three that remained, however, all made it to Round 8 of the Loser's Bracket, causing one spectator to dub them 'The Three Musketeers of PlayDip' - which perhaps cursed them, since the first (Balki Bartokomous) fell immediately afterwards. Djantani and ThorondorNL are the other two, and both are looking very strong.

Nobody has had a run quite like ThorondorNL's. After getting a bye past the First Round, he entered the tournament with (supposedly) a fairly easy draw, since his initial seeding was very high. Unfortunately for him, that 'easy draw' was Mercy, leading to a defeat in the very first round he played and an immediate drop to the Losers' Bracket. Since then, though, he's had an incredible run of sets, defeating vDiplomacy's #1 1v1 player Devonian, early favourite Peregrine Falcon, and most recently gunboat legend Josemurc - and many more besides. After facing potential elimination and overcoming it for 6 rounds, he's not about to let up now.

Taking a look at his opponent, Fluminator, we see a massive contrast. A late entrant to the tournament, Fluminator claimed to have never played a 1v1 before the Showdown, yet blitzed through the Winners' Bracket, defeating top Gunboater dagabs0 and Full Press player AlexNesta before being knocked into the Losers' Bracket by none other than Xorxes. He's an extremely unusual player in that he still claims to be bad at the variant, and attributes many of his wins to blind luck - but this is very likely just a strategy to make opponents underestimate him, and this far into the tournament nobody is going to be falling for that.

It should be interesting to see which prevails - the incredible drive and determination of ThorondorNL, or the 'Blind Luck' of Fluminator.

SET #206 - Y2KJBK vs SANTACLAUSOWITZ

gameID=203415
gameID=203416
gameID=203993 (Tiebreaker)

This set is already on its tiebreaker, and it's one hell of an interesting game to watch. A huge early positional advantage by Austria has nearly been overturned by superior tactics from France, but the game is still on a knife-edge. Austria (Y2kjbk) has 18 centers reachable, but it's going to be a hard fight to collect them before France (SantaClausowitz) breaks his line.

Both players are high level gunboaters on webDiplomacy, and both have successfully adapted their tactical prowess to work in 1v1s. Both players have also beaten extremely good players to get to this point - with the list of players Y2kjbk sent to the Losers' Bracket including site #19 Hellenic Riot and fellow gunboater Josemurc, and with SantaClausowitz beating former site #1 SplitDiplomat and high level gunboater dagabs0. Both were also sent to the Losers' Bracket by the two players who are responsible for the majority of the surviving LB players being there - genghiz knocked out Y2kjbk in Round 4, and SantaClausowitz was a victim of the long line of upsets Mercy caused in the Winners' Bracket.

Ticonderonga - You're welcome! I've been meaning to start writing some kind of commentary on this for a while, but there were really too many games going on to be able to highlight them.

This tournament is planned to be annual, and it's open to all - so for anyone who's interested, you'll get a chance to sign up and compete in early 2018! :)

@Tom - Thanks, it's much appreciated, although it hasn't been quite as smooth as it's seemed - there's been a number of occasions I've been late in getting the games set up :) I'm hoping it's smooth sailing from here on out, though.

I also promised I'd do a commentary series called Captain's Spotlight which I never got around to. The results are in for all three sets!

In the semifinals, despite a misorder that looked to have cost him one of the game, XORXES recovered to advance 2-0 over MERCY and advances to the finals, where he will wait for his final opponent. Remember - since this is double elimination, this means that Xorxes will essentially have 2 lives in the final; a huge advantage and one that is well deserved after the level of competition he's managed to stave off.

Who will that opponent be, though? Mercy is one, although he has to await the results of three more sets before he gets to play again. The other four are about to be thrown into the action once more, and only two will progress to the next round.

LB ROUND 10 - PLAYERS' SPOTLIGHTS

Set #214 - GOLDFINGER0303 vs THORONDORNL

ThorondorNL has been to the Losers' Bracket what Xorxes has been to the Winners'. After that early loss to Mercy, he has not even dropped a game - and he kept that up in his last round against Y2kjbk, winning both matches after early concessions from his opponent. After winning 8 sets in a row - more than any other player, due to the larger number of Rounds in the Losers' Bracket - only 4 players stand between him and that title. The first is an incredibly formidable player by the name of Goldfinger0303.

Goldfinger is a well-known name on both webDiplomacy and vDiplomacy, and was one of the few players in this tournament with significant experience playing France vs Austria prior to its release on this site. His knowledge was evident from the very beginning, as he was the first player to publicly push the Anti-Alpine Opening - sending the fleet to Venice - and it really only became popular after his forum posts on the subject; quite something considering that it is now the most used Austrian opening in high level FvA. He was also the first player to publicly express concerns about the effectiveness of the 'Italian' opening for Austria (Tyo Tri Alb) - an incredibly common opening in the early days of FvA on webDip, which has now dropped out of the meta for the exact reasons he described at least two months before it fell out of use.

So who will take this set? The wise old Goldfinger0303, who has been playing and perfecting his art for years? Or the determined ThorondorNL, who played his first FvA game less than 9 months ago? Only time will tell.

Set #213 - GENGHIZ vs DJANTANI

Both PlayDippers survived the last round of the tournament - ThorondorNL knocking out y2kjbk, and Djantani knocking out webDiplomacy's #1 Gunboater, SplitDiplomat. Djantani will no doubt be celebrating his victory, but he'll also be preparing for his toughest matchup thus far.

This is the first rematch in the tournament. The player Djantani is facing now - Genghiz - is the player who knocked him out of the Winners' Bracket in Round 4.

As people who were paying attention to the site header recently will know, Genghiz recently won the 1v1 Champion's League, and in style, too. After a reasonable showing in the Group Stages, he upped his game for the Round of 16 and did not drop a single match in the entirety of the elimination rounds; not even in the final, against the very player who waits as the Final Boss in this tournament - Xorxes.

Djantani will have his work cut out for him if he wants to take his revenge. Genghiz wants to take a second 1v1 title for his collection, and this fight is definitely not going to be easier than the Round 4 games.

Game links will be posted here when they have been set up!

Djantani eliminates Champions League Victor genghiz in a thrilling tiebreaker! This is the first 'revenge kill' in the tournament, as genghiz was the player who knocked Djantani out of the top bracket.

This means Djantani advances to face the winner of the Goldfinger0303-ThorondorNL set, and is guaranteed a top 4 finish.

And Goldfinger0303 takes the set 2-0! Unfortunately this is where we say goodbye to Thorondor's incredible winning streak - still, going from being knocked out of the top bracket in the very first round, to coming joint 5th out of 110 participants, is quite an achievement!

It was also quite the set to watch - if you want to see how crazy France vs Austria games can get, I absolutely recommend giving Game 1 (gameID=205678) a look.

Now we move onto Set 215, between Djantani and Goldfinger0303. One of them will end their run just one win short of a podium finish...

With that, goldfinger0303 advances to play a revenge match against the player who knocked him out - Mercy. Will we see the same reversal of fortunes that genghiz and Djantani experienced? Or will Mercy adopt the title of 007 by eliminating goldfinger once and for all?
