Feature Request: Press to multiple people
Allow press to multiple people, starting a thread where recipients are visible to members.
yoak (1497 D)
17 Jan 16 UTC
All,

This is my first forum post. I've played Diplomacy for 25 years, and played occasionally on the old PBEM judges, but I'm new to web-based, and to this site in particular.

At the risk of something that might have been discussed to death, I wanted to raise this. I saw the friends list suggestion, and this one has been my only "itch" since I joined the site.

It would be really great if you could direct press to multiple recipients and have threads that included multiple people. I discovered this and Backstabbr simultaneously and tried both. This site is my favorite of the two, with this capability being the one thing that I prefer on the other site.

I fear that this is so obvious that it may have already been much discussed and dismissed either as unwanted or too difficult to implement. If so, treat this as a hello from a new member of the community. :-)

Cheers,
Jeff

@jeff. Welcome and I hope your are enjoying this great site. The issue has been raised and the Dev team are doing what they can to make changes to this site based on their time, as it's given freely. If you can code, you could probably reach out to ATC and discuss becoming involved in the process. Otherwise patience is a virtue. There is some great competition here and I hope you are having fun

I like it, it would make allegiances easier.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)

I always worried about multi-player press -- i'm sure there are ways around it, but do we really want to make allegiances easier? i feel like most of the actual skill in this game is found in the players who are able to build alliances and betrayals with both honest discourse and deception. if you know for sure that someone is not lying to you, where is the fun in that?
of course, I can imagine multi-messaging can be used for devious reasons as well...
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Making allegiances easier isn't a problem. They'll have to be broken sooner or later if people are playing to win.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)
17 Jan 16 UTC
yes Jeff Kuta -- not worried about breaking alliances. But the skill required in forming them will be lost i think.

F2F offers a chance to have conversations with multiple countries at once
I think it would be good for here as well. It's supposed to be part of the game.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)
17 Jan 16 UTC
fair enough. i'm sure i can figure out how to twist multiple conversations to my benefit.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))

It's easy. lets say you are trying to convince France to work with you (germany) and england. england and you have a side agreement to work together against france; if you made a 3 nation press box with yourself, england and france france may feel more inclined to work with both you and england. just adds the ability to talk to multiple people at once; all the deception is still there
I would definitely support this feature as well. It's the only issue I've really noticed when comparing webdip to F2F. Although it seems like it would be quite difficult to implement in our current interface.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

Those of you who want this, have you experienced PlayDip's implementation? What do you think of it? Other implementations?
yoak (1497 D)
18 Jan 16 UTC
I'll look into helping on the programming. It turns out that it is exactly the sort of thing that I do. :-) Thanks for that suggestion. Anyone know right off how to get to the right people? There appears to be some stuff on sourceforge...

A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

Yup! Shoot us an email, and we'll go from there.

This is a pretty big change, and I wouldn't recommend it as a first change. There are some easier first changes around the messaging system, though (preventing double posts, allowing pre-game press, etc).
ssorenn (0 DX)

Pre game press. Sound worthless
To be honest
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

The point is that it's easier to make large changes clean with better knowledge of the codebase. Pre-game press and fixing the double post bug are both small(er) changes that touch the chat code - meaning that going on to do multi-country press will be more successful.

Most (all?) open source projects recommend making small changes before starting on the larger ones.

Me, I started by moving the save and ready buttons further apart.
TrPrado (461 D)
18 Jan 16 UTC
I believe that should be the way every dev starts. Until they max that out, then they can start by moving them a little closer together. Maybe eventually save will be on the right and ready on the left.

I read it a press in the pre-game. If it's about coding. I know nothing
Ogion (3882 D)

I've played PLayDip's implementation and it works pretty well. I second Jeff's motion. I've also missed this functionality, if it can be done.

And no, I haven't seen it discussed.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
18 Jan 16 UTC
It can be done, but there are questions about how to fit it in with the exisiting interface (must also work nicely on mobile).

Pre-game press is likely to improve the live game experience- since players can discuss what type of game to set up to replace games that don't get off the ground.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
18 Jan 16 UTC
my question on pre-game press would be would your name or the country name appear in press? I am assuming by pre-game you mean after all player slots are full but before the start time. in which case would the site have to decide the players countries earlier?
leon1122 (190 D)
18 Jan 16 UTC
It's like on vdip. It's before the slots are filled, so your name shows up.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
18 Jan 16 UTC
Or anonymous for anon games, probably with a unique identifier (player 1, player 2, etc).
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Jan 16 UTC
Last time I played on vdip, there was no unique identifier pre-game, it was quite hilarious, calling out Anonymous all the time trying to figure out who said what..
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
18 Jan 16 UTC
So wait there was a point where your pregame press could be one person having a conversation with themselves?
yoak (1497 D)
18 Jan 16 UTC
I've dropped a line via email. I agree with A Tin Can about smaller changes first. It takes some time to get familiar with codebases. You generally don't want to dive in with something substantial that changes the interface. :-)
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Jan 16 UTC
@CB: On vdip, yes. I imagine if you made a passworded game and gave no one the password, you could use it as a public yet anonymous diary that expires in 10 days.

Only mods and alike would know.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
19 Jan 16 UTC
Replied! I'm really excited about all the interest in the dev team.
Hastati (100 D)

As someone who's played on pDip & the android one, I can say on pDip at least it works fairly well, although the fact that theirs is more like an email system means there is certain amounts of trickery one can do.

If I was to theorycraft how to do it on this, with keeping the mobile friendly interface ideals in mind, the best way to do it would be allowing the users to create more chat tabs that function as alliance rooms. So in addition to Global, Notes, Countries, it would also allow you to say make one called "Western Triple", or "Alliance of Northern Nations", or whatever you wish.

You would then also have buttons to invite people into the room with it done by the group leader. Anyone who was invited as such would have the new tab appear. Now the tricky part comes when we ask about removing people. Do you allow people to be kicked, or do you not and instead risk late game chat UIs being filled with alliance chats?

Introducing Family Members to Diplomacy
Hello, Diplomats. BlackJackP74 here again. I have a family that I think would enjoy this wonderful game that we enjoy. We number 4, including me. I have in mind the South American map from VDip. The only question is: how do I introduce them to the game without them losing interest?

[Update] Help me build a cheap PC for my media centre
So, I finally made a decision and purchased a slightly used Intel NUC. It has a 1.8 GHz i3 processor, 128GB SSD and 3GB RAM. It's a cute little box that hides nicely in the living room. I just watched an HD movie (Sicario) and the computer had no issue transcoding it. The fan wasn't audible over the speakers and I'm thinking it's a pretty good solution for anyone going that route.

Mod Team Announcement
After many years of fantastic service to this site and its community, TheMinisterOfWar has stepped down as a moderator. I'd like to thank him for all the hard work he's put in both on the moderation side, and on the driving this site forward. His work in the background has helped make this site a better place for everyone, and I look forward to hopefully being able to go to the Netherlands and meet him again at one of the Dutch FTF tournaments this year.

Cheers, TM.
